Times-Advocate, 1979-02-28, Page 2Page 2 Times-Advocafe, February 28,1979 / Freedom group debates press coverage Press coverage provided the Huron County Society for the Freedom of Choice with something of a dilem- ma at its meeting in Clinton Wednesday night. Chairman Dr. Tony Miller ‘ 5 third Wednesday nighty told the society’s meeting that some of the members felt the press should not be allowed to at tend Wednesday’s meeting so that members could "bare our souls in private.” However, Coun. Elsa Haydon insisted the meeting A COSTUME HELPER — Alberta Gregson helps Laurie Prout with her costume for one of the numbers of Saturday's Exeter figure skating carnival. T-A photo should remain open To the public and press. The society's first two meetings were covered by the media and Mrs. Haydon said reports prompted people from as far away as Toronto and Espanola to call, sup porting the group’s efforts. Society member Stephen Norton was critical of The London Free Press coverage of the meetings. He said The Press erred when it said the society was asking the Huron County board of education to “reinstate” the controversial Margaret Laurence novel, The Diviners, during a January meeting. The society had discussed the idea of reinstating the book but softened its motion to read that the trustees "reconsider” their stand prohibiting the use of The Diviners as a high school textbook. Mrs. Haydon, who in stigated the motion, said Thursday, however, her in tent was to have the book reinstated. The board didn't take any action on the society's mo tion but society members agreed Wednesday night their efforts were not in vain since it prompted the trustees to rethink the book issue. The society agreed to allow the press to remain at the Wednesday meeting but then broke into small groups to continue discussions on society goals. Among the suggestions that followed the group’s sessions were concerns about the amount of govern ment bureaucracy, Huron County’s image because of the book banning and con cerns that people who intend to take a stand on any book should have read it all first and not only excerpts before making a value judgement. The society did not pass any motions but agreed to discuss their lengthy list of concerns again in smaller groups. The meetings of the smaller groups will be arranged by members.
