OMHA playoffs get underway tonight
Three of Exeter’s minor
hockey teams swing into
OMHA playoffs this week,
with St. Marys again
providing their first round
opposition.
The pee wee, bantam and
midget squads from the two
towns will commence their
best-of-five playoff sets at
the rec centre tonight
(.Wednesday) with the se
cond games being played in
St. Marys this Saturday.
The pee wee game gets un
derway tonight at 6:15,
followed by the bantams at
7:30 and the midgets at 8:45.
Exeter pee wees were
soundly trounced in their
Shamrock game in St.
Marys, but were edged only
3-1 in their last encounter at
home.
The local bantams had a
slight edge in their two
games, winning one and ty
ing the other, while the
midget teams have played
two ties.
The second bantam and
midget teams will also face
St. Marys in OMHA com
petition, but those series
won’t get underway for a
couple of weeks. No word
has yet been received on the
atom zone playoffs, but it is
expected St. Marys will
provide first round opposi
tion for the locals as well.
Bantams win two
The Exeter bantams com
pleted their Shamrock
schedule with a pair of wins
this week, and while the
statistics for the league are
not known as yet, the locals
will be in the race for the top
spot.
Tuesday night, they
travelled to Strathroy and
returned with a 4-2 victory.
Dave Underwood gave
them a lead in the first
period on a play with Tom
Coates, but the hosts came
back with two of their own
to take a margin early in the
second.
Mike Clark picked up the
equalizer on a play with
Underwood late in the se
cond and then Dave Shaw
and Bill Glover scored un
assisted tallies in the final
period to clinch the win.
In their final game, the
locals posted a 4-1 victory
over Ilderton at the rec cen
tre the following night.
Mike Clark and Tom
Coates shot them into a 2-0
lead in the second and after
Ilderton narrowed the gap to
a single tally, Clark and
Dave Shaw dented the twine
in the third to cap the final
Shamrock win.
Coates and Underwood
drew two assists in the con
test, while singles were
recorded by Glover, John
Kernick and Jim Siddall.
Pee wees lose
The local pee wees lost
their final Shamrock home
game on Wednesday, being
edged 2-0 by Ilderton.
The teams played to a
scoreless draw in the first
two periods, but Ilderton
caught fire after the rest
and came on with two goals
in the third.

games in recent weeks and
were nipped 3-2.
Goderich took a 2-0 lead
before Steve Gould finished
a play with Bill Fisher for

home crew re-opened their
two-goal margin and Doug
Scott pulled Exeter to within
one again when he converted
a pass from Steve Batten in
the third period.
However, the locals
couldn’t get the equalizer.
Atoms beaten
Ilderton scored a 4-1 win
over the Exeter atoms to ex
tend their winless streak,
Sunday.
Sean Whiteford took a
pass from Brett Batten to
score Exeter’s lone tally in
the game to reduce the
Ilderton lead to a single goal
in the third, but the visitors
rapped in two more to clinch
the victory.
‘Novice blow lead

early in Sunday night’s
game against Lambeth at

hold on as they dropped a 2-lz , Park, Hensall, Teeswater,
verdict in Shamrock play. ~ ‘
Scott Boyd scored for the
locals at the 3:58 mark of
the first on a play with Jon
O’Connor, but Lambeth tied

streak ends
Exeter put the pressure on
in the final stanza, but
couldn’t hit the twine on
their several close calls.
Wednesday night, the
league leading St. Marys
novice were in town and
went home with a 3-0 win.
The locals failed again to
halt the one-man show of

hockey games the Reds
ended the Blues three game
undefeated streak by han
ding them an 8-5 setback and
the Greens continued to
slump as the 'Yellows
defeated them 6-1.
The Blues looked as if they
were going to continue their
streak especially in the early
going when they established
a 4-2 lead mid way through
the second period but the
roof fell in and the Reds
scored six unanswered
goals.
In the first period the
teams split four goals; Rick
Gwalchmai and Chris
Mouratzen for the Blues and
Martin Wraith and George
Ewer for the Reds.
The Blues took the lead on
Don Lankin’s power play
goal and added to their lead
when Mouratzen scored his
second of the game. Andy
Hardy and Brett Fair
weather tied the game for
the Reds before the second
period ended.
Four goals in the third by
the Reds washed all hopes
away as Andy Hardy, Brad
Taylor, John Pollard and
Daryl Wheat scored. Don
Lankin’s second goal of the
game with 15 seconds left
finished the scoring.
Andy Hardy, Rick
Gwalchmai and Martin
Wraith were the three stars.
Five consecutive goals in
the second and third periods
led the second place Yellows
to a 6-1 victory over the
Greens. The first period
ended in a 1-1 tie when Gary
Revington scored for the
Yellows and Bill Haskett for
the Greens.
Two goals by Mike Wraith
and singles by Bill Darling,
Ron Keys and Gary
