The roll call was answered by a New Year's motto. Gwen Gibson and Tiny Wells were appointed as visitors. Christmas letters were read from Rev. Ken and Marylou Anderson and Rev. Harold , and Betty Seegmiller. Ken is on the staff of Codrington College, the Anglican Church's Theological School in Bar­ bados. Doctor Seegmiller is at the Arthur Turner Training School in Pangnirtung, Northwest Territories and Christmas is a wonderful time there when the people come in from the winter ' camps to join the regular residents. The Christmas services are well attended. Letters and cards of thanks were read for the Christmas plants delivered to the sick «ud shut-ins. Duster dolls of Phentex yarn were made under the direction of Carrie Russell. The next meeting will be in the afternoon of February 20 when the roll call will be answered with a donation for th'e students of Arthur Turner Training School to buy tapes for their lectures. Catherine Elston and Florence Genttner will serve the lunch. The annual pancake supper will be held on Shrove Tuesday, February 27. Some of the ladies hope to attend St. John’s by the Lake Euchre party, Thursday, January 25. To organize Crediton 4-H By MRS. PETER MARTIN CREDITON ■ The Crediton district 4-H organizational meeting will be held Monday January 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Crediton Community Centre. All girls who will be 12 and over by March 1, 1979 are welcome, This club’s project will be entitled "Accessories, the Final Touch”. The Crediton fire depart­ ment wishes to thank the citizens of the town for their co-operation and help at the fire on William Street early Sunday morning. FRED BOWDEN CENTRALIA The annual meeting of Centralia United Church congregation was held in the schoolroom of the church Sunday and was preceded by a smorgasbord lunch. Mr. Paul Schott, student minister, opened the meeting wijth a 'Bible reading Ephasians 4.1-7: Il­ ls. Rev. H. Moore and Mr. Schott chaired the meeting. Mrs. Elmer Powe was ap­ pointed secretary for the meeting. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and approved. Non members were given voting privileges at the meeting. Reports were given and showed a successful year. Elmer Powe moved a vote of thanks to everyone who helped with the renovations and cleaning at the par­ sonage. Mrs. Harvey Smith and Ray Mills were made new elders replacing Fred Bowden and Alvin Lobb. Mr. Lobb will be moving away during the year. Fred Bowden was made an honorary session number. The board, of stewards were to be returned to office with Bob Heywood replacing Ray Mills, trustees of the church were reappointed. The trustees and stewards are to investigate the in­ surance policy coverage and report details to the con­ gregation on February 18 at a brief meeting following the church service. Sam Skinner is to act as chair­ man for the meeting or the insurance discussion. Mrs. Ralph Lightfoot if, to take charge of organizing the usher list for the year. A motion was made to re- tain Master Bradley Shoebottom as bell ringer for the year. An invitation was extended to student minister Paul Schott to re­ main for the coming year. Rev. Moore expressed thanks to the Centralia con­ gregation for the support given him. Paul Schott also expressed his thanks for support given him and for the opportunity of working in the Centralia Zion West pastoral charge. Rev. H. J. Moore con­ ducted the Communion ser­ vice in the United Church, Sunday. He chose John 6 verse 53 for his text "Unless you eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you and he reminded his listeners that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. During the service Mr. and Mrs. Donald McCurdy and their daughter, Donna and Nancy were accepted into church membership by transfer from Hensall United Church. ELIZABETH BELL Clerk-Treasurer By MRS. E. SUMMERS GRANTON The Granton W.I. met at the home of their president, Mrs. Gordon Dann, January 16. Mrs. Dann presided and the roll call was answered by­ naming a way to save energy. A number of useful hints were given in the an­ swers. The program topic was “Family and Consumers Affairs” and convened by Mrs. Hamilton Hodgins and Mrs. James Kerr. Mrs. Hodgins gave a reading on the motto, which was "Are we confusing the high cost of living, with the cost of high living” and entitled it "The Old Days”. Mrs. Hodgins also read an article on the living con­ ditions of our Native Canadians (Indians), dealing with the problems that the health services were experiencing with un­ sanitary living, which was directly contributing to infectious disease and a deficiency of vitamin A. Mrs. Kerr gave a most interesting report on her visit to the British Isles and Ireland last summer. She was accompanied by her teenaged granddaughter who was very interested in the history of Britain. Mrs. Kerr said they took a 13 day bus tour of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and gave a detailed account of the many points of interest historical and otherwise that they visited on this tour. Mrs. Hodgins told the members about the new system of egg grading, and concluded the program with some useful household hints. A delicious dessert lunch was served by the hostess and the conveners. Church news At the United Church Rev. Elwood Morden led in worship and officiated with the Sacrament of Holy Communion on Sunday morning. Taking as the theme for his Communion Meditation “Symbols of Faith” Rev. Morden said the symbols of thfe church are meant to have a deep meaning for us, the Cross, marks on the pews, and also certain windows, are symbols of the life of the church. Bread and wine are the symbols of the Sacrament of Holy Com­ munion. At the St. Thomas Anglican Church, Rev. Mary Mills conducted the Sunday morning worship, and was the celebrant at the service of Holy Communion, assisted by Miss Marion Herbert who read the Epistle of the Day. Rev. Mills also conducted the Vestry meeting, when the following church officers were elected: minister’s warden, James Hodgins; people’s warden, to be ap­ pointed; lay delegate to the Synod, Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins; substitute, Mrs. Percy Hodgins; Vestry clerk, Mrs. Fred Crouch; treasurer, to be appointed. Board of Management, James Hodgins, Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins, Mrs. Percy Hodgins, Mrs. Fred Crouch, Mrs. Laverne Morley, Mrs. Clarence Lewis, Derwin Beatson, Kenneth Hodgins, Percy Hodgins, Mrs.. Donald Roloson, Mrs. Kenneth Hoar, and Mrs. David Haywood. Rev. Mills gave a report of all the events that took place last year, and expressed her thanks to all who had helped in many ways. Scout news On Friday evening, 11 scouts their leaders and friends enjoyed some skiing at Ski High, and later lun­ ched at the Chalet on the grounds. Mr. & Mrs. Fred Cook are enjoying a motor trip in Florida and visited with Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Harlton at Lakeland.
