Any liniment?
We would imagine the sale of liniment and muscle
relaxers was high in the area Monday morning.
Saturday night members of the 1960-61 Exeter
junior hockey team took to the ice at the South Huron
Rec Centre against the Zurich Old Timers.
While several of the team are still active with
local rec league teams, some haven’t laced the blades
on for many years. Two remarks we heard were,
“when is it over?” and “my legs feel like rubber.”
Seriously, the teams put on a good show.
Although, the tempo of the game was considerably
slower than that turned in 18 years ago, the stick
handling abilities of many stood out.
Two weeks ago we asked for more information
about the first junior team organized in Exeter for the
1951-52 season.
A talk with manager Derry Boyle and a couple of
the players has revealed the majority of the playing
personnel.
Jim Young of Lucan was the goal tender. Qther
members were Jack Fuller, Bob Wade, Reg
Schroeder, Gord Cann, Murray Brintnell, Keith
Brintnell, Bill Hodgins, Glenn McFalls, Max
Tiedeman and Gerald Dearing.
The coach of the team was Bob George, an
employee of Ontario Hydro in this area at the time.
Should be interesting
The upcoming International hockey series
between team NHL and the Soviet Union should prove
to be very interesting. *
While the National hockey league all stars will not
have much time for practices, they will at least be
among the top 25 players in the league and the series
comes midway through the season when all com
petitors should be at or near their peak in physical
condition.
The full team is expected to be named this week
adding to the starting six players selected by the fans
in all NHL cities.
The three games will be played in Madison Square
Gardens in New York on the nights of February 8, 10
and 11. All games will be shown on national television.

The Exeter Hawks junior
hockey team of the 1960-61
season was reunited Satur
day night and they showed
some of their previous form
as they downed the Zurich
Old Timers by a score of 6-2.
Both clubs took plenty of
time to get warmed up with
only one goal in the first
period. It came from the
stick of Jack Stephan for the
juniors. Stephan is a regular
member of the Zurich old
timers and switched sides
for this special contest.
In the second period the
Exeter club jumped into a
. two goal lead as Mike
Cushman and Jack
Chipchase hit the mark.
Cushman pounced on a
rebound on a blueline shot
by Murray Bell and
Chipchase scored after two
rebounds on a shot from the
point by Cushman.

Dinner is nearing
This is the second last time we will be able to talk
about the upcoming sixth annual Exeter Sportsmen’s
dinner. Sponsored by the Exeter Lions club, the pop
ular event will be held Tuesday, February 6 at the
South Huron rec Centre. .
Chairman Peter Raymond and his dedicated com
mittee members have been busy lining up an attrac
tive and interesting array of guests and celebrities
from all facets of the sporting scene.
Heading the speaking list will be Bobby Bragan
who is well known in the big league world of baseball.
Bragan, a scrappy catcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers
and other NL teams was the manager of the Pittsburg
Pirates fora time.
Since his active playing days, Bragan was in
volved in the Baseball Players Association and has
now moved to Commissioner Bowie Kuhn’s office as a
goodwill ambassador.
A more detailed list of expected guests will
appear in a story in this issue as we were unable to get
in touch with Peter Raymond at the time of this
writing.
One of the most successful and popular men in
professional hockey is’expected to be in attendance.
He is the elder statesman of the game Frank Selke Sr.
Selke is one of the men responsible for building
two successful hockey operations. He combined with
Conn Smythe to get the Toronto Maple Leafs un
derway and then switched his allegiance to the Mon
treal Canadiens and their success over the years is no
secret.
Two active hockey players have made tentative
plans to attend the local dinner. They are Dan
Maloney of the Leafs and former London Knight Brad
Marsh who is now with the Atlanta Flames.
Football will be represented by Toronto Argo
defensive star Wayne Smith and possibly someone
from the Detroit Lions or Cleveland Browns. Peren
nial favorite Glenn Weir will also likely attend. Weir
was here for the first five dinners.
Lou Whitaker of'the Detroit Tigers who was nam
ed American league rookie of the year in 1978 will
definitely be here and Rick Bossetti of the Blue Jays is
a distinct possibility.
The master of ceremonies will be Tom McKee
who is well known for his coverage of all sports on
CBC television. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for
public and high school students. They are available
from any Lions member. All proceeds are directed to
crippled children’s organizations and monies spent on
tickets are tax deductible.
Don’t wait. Get your tickets early and we’ll see
you at the Rec Centre on February 6.

hockey
The first Zurich score was
notched by Dick Bedard on a
backhand shot from about 20
feet out.
At the 30 second mark of
the third period, Frank
Boyle combined with Bob
Jones and Jack Stephan to
put the Hawks in from 4-1.
Only a few minutes later
some of the same players
were in on the fifth Exeter
marker. Bob Jpnes
registered with passing help
coming from Frank Boyle
and Jack Chipchase.
Ken Smale fired the last
Zurich goal at 13 minutes
and Jim Russell took care of
the final Exeter goal bn a
three-way passing effort
with Mike Cushman ’ and
Fred Wells.
Goalies at both ends turn
ed in good performances in
the free wheeling contest.
Gerry Cooper in the Exeter
nets was very sharp turning
aside many difficult shots
while Percy Bedard and
Paul Steckle sharing the
Zurich netminding duties
were also effective.
The goalies were helped
on several occasions by goal
posts. Jim McDonald and
Dale Turvey of the Hawks
rapped shots off the Zurich
goal posts and the same
thing happened at the other
end shots by Bob Johnston
The wrestling team from
