The readers write: Year of child, trails and education comments Dear Editor, Happy International Year of the Child! The United Nations has proclaimed 1979 as a year for children, renewing its conviction that children should be at the centre of world concern. I hope you will share this concern in your news coverage throughout the year. The Canadian Commission for International Year of the Child believes that the rights of children are best realized in the context of the family and the community. Many dimensions of the child’s world can also be examined separately so that we can understand them from the child’s point of view, To this end we have devised mon thly themes to help focus attention all year long. These are: January — The Child as Person, February — The Child as Citizen, March — The Child as Creator, April — The Child, Nature and the Environment, May — The Health and Well-being of the Child and the Family, June — The Exceptional Child. July — The Child’s Right to Belong, August — The Child at Play, September — The Child as Learner and Worker, October — The Child as Neighbour, November — The Child, Books and the Media, December — The Child, the Family, the Community, the World. I hope you will find in teresting and exciting ways to develop these themes or others which will appeal to your audience. In addition, the Com mission will issue news releases and fact sheets during the coming months. I hope we can count on your NOW OPEN The Clipper Unisex 319 Eastern Ave.,(Dow Subdivision) OPEN Tues, to Fri. 9 - 5 p.m. Thurs. Yours truly Doris Ogilvie Chairperson ¥¥ like to of add my Bette growing ¥ Dear Sir; I would criticism Stephenson to the list of irate people. Why the Ontario Government’ has kept this woman on in any capacity is beyond me. If a government must have its token female, why must she be so ill informed and incompetent? Maybe Bette Stephenson is there to try and show the Canadian people how ineffective women can be in govern ment. If this is so, she is doing a great job. It is not just her latest inanities in the educational field; every portfolio she has undertaken has suffered. I believe Bette Stephenson is a poor example for Canadian women in government. I would rather see a thinking male in her place than some lukewarm, ineffective and unknowlegeable woman. Yours truly Sylvia Craine* * ¥ Sir: The New Year will see the introduction of a new Con stitutional Amendment Bill, prepared by the federal government on the basis of comments made about Bill C-60, its original proposal to replace the B.N.A. Acts. It is important for citizens to maintain their vigilance over changes relating to our Monarchial form of government. This summer, the then Minister of State for Federal-Provincial Relat ions, Marc Lalonde, tried to defend the republican provisions of Bill C-60 by stating that they merely reflected ‘current practice’ concerning the roles of the Queen and the Governor General. Most Canadians, and all the provincial premiers, were not fooled by his distortion of the facts. However, undoubtedly the argument of ‘current practice’ will come up over and again during future debate. So, let it first be remembered that in many cases, ‘current practice’ is nothing more than the practice of the Trudeau Ministry. As such, it lies clearly within the political realm, and is subject to change — unless frozen in a written constitution! To demonstrate in dramatic fashion the above point, a list has been prepared detailing the many changes which have weakened the Canadian Monarchy during the latter part of the Queen’s reign. They range from symbolic (1969 — removal of the Queen’s right to sign Canadian Ambassadors’ credentials). Canadians who care about retaining the Monarchy, and who would like a copy of the complete list of erosions to bring to the attention of their friends and elected representatives, may obtain the article by writing the Monarchist League of Canada, 2 Wedgewood Crescent, Ottawa, Ontario K1B 4B4. Yours very truly, Arthur Bousfield, Vice-Chairman, the Monarchist League of Canada, Inc. ★ ★ ★ Dear Bill: In reply to your write up on The Year of the Child. I thought that the last half of your article was very good for the kids of Exeter, but I found the first half very biased. You talk about all the things that kids do wrong. As their elders why don’t we help them instead of criticizing them? We are not perfect so why should they have to grow up being perfect. I am not trying to say that if they do make a mistake 99c 77c 9C S 50% OFF TABLES, LAMPS, SOFA & CH AIRS, BEDDING, OCCASIONAL CHAIRS, BEDROOM SUITES, that it shouldn’t be corrected, but if we make a spectacle out of their mistakes it will only en courage them to do it again — maybe they do it to get attention and if this is the case we have nobody to blame but ourselves. Also I don’t feel The Year of the Child was designed for kids who are well off to help them rip off the old man and if the old man is being ripped off it’s about time he started running his own household. I believe that this year was designed to help children who need our assistance to make their life more meaningful in fact just to help them live. 1st Abortion: One out of every five babies born in Canada is aborted. Our laws aren’t made to protect children. The unborn are helpless. 2nd Child Abuse: There are 46 active cases of child abuse alone in Huron County, and you probably won’t be able to count the unreported cases on all 10 fingers. Why wait for somebody else to do the dirty work? If you feel a child is being abused report it. 3rd UNICEF: This is a non-profit organization trying to help all children who are underprivileged. Instead of buying a bottle of pop or a bag of chips put that money towards UNICEF — every penny helps. THE SALE EVERYONE WAITS FOR IS HERE. DINNEY FURNITURE, ONE OF SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO'S LARGEST FURNITURE STORES BRINGS YOU ITS ANNUAL JANUARY CLEARANCE SALE. NOW IS YOUR CHANCE These are only three examples and there are many more. This is my opinion — I am glad "The Year of the Child” was designed for 1979. To whoever organized this year I say Thank You, it’s about time. Connie Dietrich ★ ★★ Dear Sir: Want a place close by to go cross-country sking? This winter two trails, one north and one south of the river, are being maintained bet ween Exeter and the Morrison Dam Conservation Area by the Ausable- Bayfield Conservation Authority. The south trail starts behind the South Huron Recreation Centre, runs through the wooded area along the river, comes out on the Ironwood Golf course, runs across Dr. Read’s property and empties out on the Morrison Dam con servation area. The trail at the Morrison Dam conservation area starts at the wooded area beside the reservoir, and comes out on the laneway leading to the parking lot. The north trail commences on the north side of the bridge, runs past the P.U.C. pump-house, through a wood lot, continues on the flood plain below the Exeter JANUARY CLEARANCE SALE nx x n Times-Advocate, January 24, 1979 curling rink and ends at Riverview Park. The round trip is 6 km. long. The Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority does not own the land on which the trails run between Exeter and the Morrison Dam conservation area. The Conservation Authority was able to obtain a temporary easement from the private landowners, for only the winter months. They were granted the privilage of using the privately-owned right-of- way with the understanding that the easement agreement can be revoked if the landowners feel it is necessary. Understandably, landowners should not subjected to abuse of trails (i.e. damage properties, trees, etc.) trespassing on lands which have not been designated for trails. It is up to the cross-country skiers to stay on the marked trails and to use them wisely, if the privilege of using the trails is to be continued, The Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority would like to take this op portunity to thank those landowners who are involved with the temporary easement agreement. Without the involvement of all of the landowners along the river, the trails would not be possible. Susan E.
