The northern group, coached by Exeter’s Ron Bogart, eked out a 5-4 win in an exciting, fast-moving contest between the best of the two divisions. “We should take those two teams on an exhibition schedule,” commented Lucan hockey booster Jim Freeman in discussing the game at the junior tour nament in Exeter over the week end. The game started out on an enthusiastic note due to some pre-public claims by coaches Bogart and Brian Abbey of Belmont over the apparent superiority of the two divisions. As it ended up, the north barely managed to fulfill Bogart’s claim as Ron Elliott of Mitchell drilled a shot from the point with 1:13 remaining to give the north the win. Bogart’s squad started out in high gear and opened up a 2-0 lead in the first on goals by Doug Anstett of Seaforth and Lucan’s Rick Freeman. Anstett picked up his second near the mid-way mark of the middle frame before the south hit the sheet. They whittled the lead to 3-2 at the end of the second on goals by John Killins of Belmont and Chuck Hindley of Port Stanley. The south evened the count at 3-3 at the 5:19 mark of the third on a goal by Belmont’s Jeff Thomas and he came back to give them a 4-3 margin at the 14:02 mark. However, the north put on the pressure and Paul Medd of the Irish scored the equalizer at the 16:18 mark, setting the stage for Elliott’s winning tally. HAWKS ARE RUNNER-UPS — The Exeter Hawks placed second in the Exeter Minor Hockey Association Junior “D" hockey tournament held on the weekend. Presenting the pennant to Hawks' captains Steve Jennison and Don McKellar was Exeter Mayor Derry Boyle. T-A photo Atoms lose in three overtimes The Exeter atoms made their second appearance at the Silver Stick tournament in Forest, Saturday, and went into the third overtime period before being sidelin ed by the second minor team from Sarnia. Neither team could find the range in regulation time and had the fans on the edge of the seats as they battled for the winner in the three sudden-death periods. Sarnia finally found the mark on a tally by David Pasker to settle the issue. JOHN MacDONALD Versatile Investments Inc. 190 Wortley Road, Suite 105 London, Ont. N6C 4Y7 Office Ph. 438-5386 Res. Three of the Hawks were from Mitchell, the other two being from Exeter. *' Goalie Bob Ward was picked by Boyle for his play against Exeter in the final game, while the defensive pair elected-were Exeter’s Phil Knight and Wingham’s Bernie Haines. Knight picked up assists in Exeter’s games. The centre was Heinbuck, a minor midget from Mitchell. He scored two unassisted face-off goals against Exeter in the final and was the steadiest of the Mitchell players in their win over Wingham. Harold Davis, a former Exeter minor player from Fullarton, was chosen at left wing, while completing the team was Exeter’s Fred Mommersteeg at right wing. Despite the fact Mom mersteeg had been out of the lineup with a broken collar bone for the past four weeks, he paced the win over Belmont and was the Hawks inspirational leader both on and off the ice.
