and his family at Don Mills.
While there she had the
special treat of seeing Lois
Marshall, the great mezzo
soprano in person, Ms.
Marshall was guest soloist at
a Christmas concert put on
by the Orpheus Choir of
Toronto. Coffee and cheese-
was served after the concert
and a carol sing was
thoroughly enjoyed.
Two of Mrs. Oestricher’s
nephews and their wives
were dinner guests at her
sons home and all enjoyed a
very pleasant visit.
Mrs. Oestricher
telephoned many of her
friends and relatives in the
district.
Christmas Eve she at
tended a community carol
service at her son’s church
presented by the C.G.I.T.
. group combining i t with their
candlelight service. Her
granddaughter Adrienne
was MC. It was a pleasure to
attend Christmas Sunday
Service with her family at
their church. All are choir
members.
Later that week her son
drove her to her brother,
Mr. Robert Hardy’s home in
Burlington. He took them out
to a restaurant overlooking
beautiful Burlington Bay.
The next day Mr, Hardy took
his sister for noon luncheon
with their sister .Mr. W. R.
M. Bain. She spent New
Years with her sister.
On her way home due to
bus cancellations she spent
overnight with a niece in
London. One of the
treasures she brought home
with her was an autographed
copy of the “Scarlet Mantle”
a fiction novel based on the
life and times of Julius
Caesar. This is a precious
gift as it was written by her
brother Dr. W. G. Hardy,

Mr. & Mrs. Dave McClure
and family enjoyed a trip to
Florida over the Christmas
holidays. They toured the
Thomas Edison Museum at
Fort Meyers.
Lake Okeechobee area is a
garden center. They have
drained the marshland in
this area and have put up
dikes to keep the water back.
Diesel pumps are used to do
this because of the uncertain
electric power during
hurricane season.
While at Lake Okeechobee
they enjoyed a farm tour
seeing and tasting fresh
lettuce, celery and sugar
cane. They saw fields of
carrots and radish. In each
field they were told how the
product is grown and
maintained and its uses. On
leaving they were given bags
of fresh radish and baby
carrots.
They then travelled up to
Orlando and Clairmont in the
Central region where there
are many largecitrous farms.
While in Leesburg they
visited with Mr. & Mrs. Andy
Dixon and were taken on a
tour of one of the large
orange groves.
In the northern part of
Florida they saw many horse
and cattle ranches. The
cattle called Brahma are a
cross between the brahma
and hereford variety. The
calves are marketed and
sent further north to be
fattened.
They had lovely weather
and found it to be a most
interesting trip.

Sugar and Spice
— Continued from Page 4
there’s larceny, there’s loot.
From Miriam Fischer,
Milton: “God bless you for
your invigorating column in
this week’s Champion. It was
more than Sugar & Spice, it
was like a shot of adrenalin
to my “wounded ego” that
had been bruised badly in the
last two years,since I turned
65.” Thanks, Miriam. I’m
getting there.
From a lady in Alliston, of
70: “damned if I’ll subscribe
to the Alliston Herald again,
since they dropped your
column. Hope you’re writing
a book.”
Well, it’s been fun cleaning
up the desk. All Ijhave to do
now is clean up my personal
relationships, my language,
and my ears.
Hummmn. No problem
about the ears.
Let’s ’ear from you,
readers. That might do it all.
Have a fine year in ’79 and
don’t be scared of a damn’
thing. Woops.
