That’s what made last year’s inaugural junior’ tournament in Exeter such a success, and it is expected to equal that when eight junior “D” teams take to the ice at the rec centre this Saturday and Sunday for the second annual event. Mitchell and Exeter were the pre-tournament favorites • last year, but the Lucan Irish beat them both to skate home with the $500 first prize money. The two Hawks clubs are a’gain among the pre tournament favorites based on their records to date this season, but they ’ll again face some stiff opposition, including the Irish. Whaf's For 79? PRICES HAVE BEEN REDUCED Another of the strong entries is from Wingham, the Ironmen having been un defeated in their own league. They were OHA semi finalists last season, losing out to Lakefield Chiefs who then went on to beat Exeter in the seventh game of the final. The play gets underway Saturday when the southern group leading Belmont Bombers arrive to tackle Exeter. The Lucan Irish will follow in a tilt with the Cayuga Red Wings. Seaforth Centennaires, much improved over last season, will battle Mitchell in the third tilt and the evening game will see Wingham against the Tavistock Braves. The first semi-final will be held Sunday at noon and that will pit either Exeter or Belmont against the winners of the Lucan and Cayuga contest. The winners of the Seaforth-Mitchell set then play either Wingham or Tavistock in the other semi final. The winners take to the ice at 8:00 p.m., Sunday, for the $500 first prize. Times-Advocpte, January 4, 1979 Page 9 Only dedicated hunters left during cold weather By BILL McNUTT January has come again. With it comes the cold, wind and snow. Most of the hun ting seasons are now closed but a few remain open for those of us who will brave the elements. There are a few good things about hunting this time of year. The best is the uncrowded covers. Most, ex cept the dedicated hunter, have packed their guns away for another year. Another thing is that you can read the stories that are written in nature’s pages of snow. Even though you don’t see the animals and birds you can tell what has happened. The tracks will show how carefully a fox stalked the pheasant, but to no avail as he burst into the air right in front of his pursuer. Follow ing the trail will show how he eluded two hunters then settled for frozen wild grapes for lunch. Hunting seasons which re main open include, grouse until January 15, rabbits un til February 28, and fox and raccoons all year. Fox hunting is at its best BOWLING SCORES 4 0 3 3 4 Ladies Tuesday P. Although they had trouble enough keeping their skulls intact in that victory, the Hawks took advantage of the Seaforth penalty parade to rap in five power-play goals, while allowing only one themselves. Seaforth picked up 21 minor penalties, compared- to the 13 assessed against the Hawks. Rookie Preston Dearing regained his fast scoring clip as he paced the win with a hat-trick and added one assist for a four-point night. Ken Pinder added two goals and two assists to duplicate the effort, while the single tallies came off the sticks of Ken Varley, Phil Knight and Dave Bogart. Knight also added a pair of assists, while helping out on one goal each were Brad Taylor, Don McKellar and Brian Mercer. The Hawks led 2-0 at the end of the first and in creased the margin to 7-3 at the end of the second and then resorted to saving their scalps in the final 20 minutes when Seaforth picked up 11 of their 21 penalties. Bad second In Friday night’s game in Seaforth, six of the seven goals were socred in the se cond period and Seaforth came up with two power play goals to take the narrow win, They led 4-2 at the end of the second, and despite a steady barrage of shots in the final period, the Hawks could muster only one tally against Louis Arts. JiiiliiilliiiiiliiiiiliiiiniKiiiiiililiiHim | ADAMS i Heating & Cooling Jamie Caldwell, Terry Caldwell and Dave Kinsman collected the Exeter tallies, with Kinsman, Ken Pinder and Preston Dearing ear ning the assists. It was another rugged con test, as are most games in Seaforth, with the Centen naires picking up 16 minors and the Hawks 14. Goalie Randy Lovie may have set some sort of league record when he was assessed four of the Exeter minors, two for slashing and two for roughing, as he was tabbed by the referee for attemp- * ting to keep opposing players out of his goal crease area. The game report showed that Exeter had 61 shots to Seaforth’s 56, but coach Ron Bogart penned a note to that which simply stated “I don’t believe it.” The Hawks host their an nual junior “D” tournament at the rec centre this Satur day and Sunday and return to league action on Tuesday when they travel to Mitchell . - for another bid at closing the gap with the loop leaders. < OP su SP FL CB OB C4 DA LE RO 5 0 2 5 2 7 2 7 5 0 Wednesday Morning Ladies N. Those of you who were aware of the deer which was caught in the cemetery fence west of town on 83 will be glad to hear that it is all right. Conservation officer Bob Pegg responded to the call but not until after the deer was free. He tracked the deer and tne next day put it up out of its bed. It promptly left the scene showing ho §ign of injury from the incident of the previous day. The dogs which were chas ing it also escaped and little is known about them. Anyone knowing anything about them could do their part to save other deer if they would call the Ministry or Natural Resources office and leave your information for Blake Evens. The call is free of charge, just call the operator and ask for Z-9-2000 from Ex eter. This is a 24 hour line which has been set up so anyone can contact them immediately free of charge when they witness a game law violation.
