Kids outline requests in letters to Santa
Meaning
BY GRAHAM SOLOMON
Grade 8
Exeter Public School
The snow outside was a
swirling storm as we peered out
the window. "Gee, I hope Santa
can get here" said my little
sister. "I want to get all of my
presents."
"Is that all you think of,
presents?" I said.
"I also think of getting out of
school." she said.
"Bah, you're in grade three,
school is easy for you, I'll bet you
don't even know why presents
are given on Christmas day," I
said,
"Sure I do!" she said, "Cause
it's Christmas and you're
supposed to."
"That's not the real meaning
and I'll bet you can't find out on
your own. In addition, I
continued. If you can find it out,
by yourself, I will buy you any
present as long as it isn't over
fifteen dollars. You must find it
before you go to bed at 8:30."
This started my sisters
thoughts swirling. I knew she
was determined and wouldn't
give up easily, I saw her come
out of her room with a pile of
Christmas books and sit under
the tree. She scanned the pages
carefully looking for
information,

Dear. Santa Claus,
For Christmas, (If you can
afford it) I would like a 900 X
power microscope or if you
would like to be generous, you
can give me a 00 X 100 X 200 X
300 X 400 X 500 etc. to 1200 X
power microscope. Can you give
me a digital watch? One that
tells time, month, day and date.
That is all I want for
Christmas. I do not want too

A Present for
Santa

When Santa comes you usually
leave him milk and cookies. But
this is a story about a girl who
leaves something different.
It was a wet and cold night
where Cathy lived, All were
excited because tomorrow would
be Christmas Eve. Cathyhwas a
very kind girl, but this year she
wanted to leave Santa something
special.hAll that day she thought
and thought.
Just what would be the right
thing for Santa? Finally she
came up with an idea. She would
leave him a Christmas poem.
She got out a pencil and some
paper and started working on it.
The next morning she finished
it and this is what it'read:
If I had a
Christmas Wish
If I had a Christmas wish
I'd wish I were a tree
A tree trimmed with light bulbs
And a star at my peak '
If I had a Christmas wish
If I had a Christmas wish,
I'd wish I were a gift,
A gift wrapped in silky pink
And in me would be mink
If I had a Christmas wish.
If I had a Christmas wish,
I'd wish I were a star.
A star soft as the moon
And shiny as a silver spoon
If I had a Christmas wish.
The next morning she' came
running down the stairs and to
her surprise the lights of the
Christmas tree were on. A gift
was left from Santa and it was
wrapped in a silky pink paper.
There was a huge star on'the
tree as shiny as a silver spoOn_.
Now every year she leaves 'a'
different poem.

One Christmas eve in Santa's
bar, strolled in big Rudolph with
a bright red cigar. He stood in
the middle while the ashes
charred his 'face with a sudden

middle of a clump of black hair.
When Santa walked in a warm
glow came not from Santa but
from Rudolph's big toe. Santa

you know Rudolph has been

As my family waited in the

smiling faces, I moved silently
into our kitchen. As I came to the

a little mouse skittired over to

find some leftover crumbs. I

all he could,
Just then the chimes told me

Many people were sitting down
in a chair by their fire place. The
little kids were so excited, every
ten minutes, they would look on
the roof to see if St. Nick was
there.
The Christrnas Carols sounded
so nice. People walking and
yelling out MERRY
CHRISTMAS! ! The children
went to bed early, so that
Christmas would come fast.
Then when all the children were
in bed, they finally got to sleep.
Later the clock struck 12:00. All
of a sudden, jolly old St. Nich
came down the chimney, and
filled the stockings, and put toys
under the Christmas tree.

went shopping for presents. I got
four presents. One for my

dad. The last one was for Santa.
When I got home I got some
wrapping paper and wrapped it
up.
That night I put my stocking at

one-thirty. That night I woke up
and crept downstairs to see the
expression on Santa's face. Santa
just came down the chimney
when I got there.
I gave him the present but he
didn't know what it was. I said it
was a camera and showed him
how to work it, He said that Was

He thanked me, put the
presents under the tree and filled
up the stocking and left without a

T'was the night before 1978,
Two cakes, a sausage and turkey
I ate,
I also did feast,
On some tasty roastbeast,
And decided to settle down.for
the night.
I jumped into bed with a bound,
And all of a sudden I heard a
strange sound,
I could not uunderstand what it
was trying to say,
For I had lost my hearing aid
just yesterday,
I deducted I was dreaming and
went to sleep for the evening.
But then I heard Guy,
With his band on high,
I knew I was dreaming, why Guy
had died,
Had the newspapers lied,
I went to the window to see what
was the matter.
And there was Guy, conducting
the band,
Up and down went his skillful
hand,
The countdown had started,
And I almost parted,
Because I thought I was going
insane,
Then Guy disappeared just the
same,

be no wars.

This year please send me a

Dear Santa,
Last year you sent me the
stupidest things. I didn't say I
wanted any games. And that doll
that walks didn't even work.
Your elves can work better than
that. I think they should be fired.
I told you I wanted a real
airplane, but you gave me a toy
one and it was broken.
The year before you didn't give
me anything. Maybe you were
too fat to get through the
chimney but we have a window
and 'the door was open. 1 think we
should have a new Santa Claus.
This year I want you to give
me the right things and if you
don't I'll get everyone to put you
in jail.
My friend told me that she was
awake when you came and you
left her some candy, but you put
a mouse in the stocking and it ate
up all the candy, Don't you care
about us? This year I'll be very
mad if you don't give me what I
want.

I am writing to you about a
slighto problem I am having.
Sara Claus has not been acting
very nice to us, for ex. we are not
getting. our meals at 5:00, our
socks are full of holes and she
won't do a thing about it.
Also she must have bad nerves
because yesterday she burnt the
cookies she was baking and then
she dropped them on the floor on
the way to the table.
All the other elves feel. the
same way as I do. Please try to
do something if, you can, we
would really appreciate it. Don't

Reeve Jack Tinney of Hay
Township is attempting to
become a member of an elite
group-Hay township reeve who
have served as Wardens for the
County of Huron,
Since 1898 there have only been
six such individuals - George
McKuen - 1889, Peter Lamont -
1909, Elmer Klopp - 1927, Louis H.
Rader - 1932, George Armstrong -
1942 and Earl Campbell - 1955.
Tinney the father of eight
children, farms 200 acres in the
middle of Hay township and has
spent 10 years on municipal
council plus another six on county
council.
On his intentions behind
seeking the Warden's chair
of Giving
At 7:30 p.m. she had finished
looking through her books. she
had given me a few answers but
none of them were even close.
She then decided to watch one of
those Christmas shows but
Frosty the Snowman didn't tell
her a thing. It was 8:00 and she
decided to watch another
Christmas show. After twenty
minutes of viewing she decided
she wouldn't find the answer on
that show.
There was 10 minutes before
her bedtime. She sat in front of
the tree and thought heavily. At
8:28 she got up and went to our
encyclopedias. She picked out
volume number 3,C, looking up
Christmas. She read slowly and
carefully sometimes stumbling
through the large words while
reading. You see she was very,
very smart and she could read as
well as any grade 6. Finally she
closed the book and said, "We
give presents to honour the birth
of Jesus and we give presents
like the Wise men gave gifts to
Jesus. There, she said, that has
to be right!"
I sighed as I thought of that 15
dollars down the drain, "Well,
you may be little but you sure
aren't dumb." I said. She smiled
happily and skipped off to bed
with the meaning of giving
locked in that little brain.
Tinney says that "it would be a
nice way of finishing up my
career."
When asked if this implied that
Tinney was considering a with-
drawal from public life sometime
in the near future, the reeve
replied that its up to the voters
of the township to determine his
future.
"I'd like to see the county
continue to show the
way. , Huron County has
always been a leader," Tinney
stated,
He emphasized that power at
the local level of government
should be maintained,
A close race for the highest post
in Huron is predicted by Tinney
with himself, Gerry Ginn, reeve
of Goderich township and Bob
Lyons of West Wawanosh
township involved in the contest,
Tinney stated that in his travels
around the county he has
been well . received with the
"hospitality being terrific.
