Rowever, he said another see- sion with Southcott Pines residents would probably be held again to hear from those who couldn't get through the storm. Stephen township council of- ficially went on record Monday night as opposing any annexation plans the village of Grand Bend May have in mind, Grand Bend council has held one meeting and is planning others with residents of the townships of Stephen and Bosanquet who reside adjacent to Grand Bend, By MRS. HEBER DAVIS Church service at St. Patrick's church was cancelled owing to the illness of Rev. Mary Mills, Sunday. The congregation gathered in the Parish hall for the Christmas Party for the Sunday School, The youngsters entertained following carols with Mrs. Wayne Carroll at the piano and Mrs. Ron Carroll as mistress of ceremony, Bobby Gee accompanied his sister Jenifer. She sang Holy Night. The Blay family assisted by Donna McFalls sang a carol, Brenda Carroll read the Scripture Story of Jesus' Birth from St, Luke. Marylou Tindall Sharen said the people were polite and receptive, although he suggested it was evident that more stress would have to be placed on getting more background information into the hands of those they are ad- dressing. The Stephen resolution passed Monday night is as follows: "The township of Stephen and the township of Bosanquet have seen reports and advertisements in the newspapers that the village of Grand Bend is initiating meetings to discuss the an- nexation of portions of the neigh- bouring municipalities. The councils of the two town- read a poem "The Heavens Declare The Glory of God". Nancy Tindall played a number of carols on her clarinet. Ian Carroll gave a ,reading on "Christ's Life". All of the smaller children joined in singing "Be careful Little Eyes What You See" with motions. Santa Claus arrived to the children singing "Jingle Bells". All of the scholars were presented with gifts with special merit to the children with most perfect attendance for the past year "Their comments tended to be of the type to seek information," Sharen said of the discussion. He said one fact that hecarrle evident was that most of the Bosanquet residents had a mis- conception of what taxes they would end up paying if they were ships have not received any contact front the council of the village of Grand Bend regarding their plans. The council of the township of Stephen and the township of Bosanquet hereby state that they are opposed to any annexation. If the council of the village of Grand Bend is desirous of discussing the problems the township councils are willing to meet anytime at Grand Bend's convenience," LITTLE DOUBT Bosanquet township council members left little doubt last week as to their feelingslof the Grand Bend annexation hid. "The idea of robbing the rich to support the poor has some merit, but when Mr, Sharen starts robbing the poor to pay the rich, something is very wrong," Reeve Jack McDonald said. Another councillor said Grand Bend has nothing to offer Southcott Pines residents except trouble and higher taxes. Bosanquet Deputy-Reeve Carl Rood suggested that taxes are unimportant to Pines people in that they want to retain their privacy and independence and Grand Bend wouldn't be offering that. When it was suggested the township should make known their opposition to the Ontario Municipal Board, clerk Robert McCordic commented that it was too soon for that. "Then let's tell Grand Bend and make it clear to the media that we are opposed to this move," said Councillor Srokocz. "We cannot stand still and let them take the best of Bosanquet and Stephen for no other reason than an inflated and overrated sense of importance." It has been estimated that Bosanquet stands to lose at least $1 million in assessment if the annexation is successful. added to Grand Bend, The general rate in /30sanquet Is slightly over two mills higher than that of Grand Bend, although the latter has an ad- ditional $15 garbage fee that is not paid through taxation. At the meeting, spokesmen for the village explained that by joining Grand Bend, the residents would then have a say in the municipality which most directly affects the value of their property. It was explained that the residents have a natural affinity to Grand Bend, but they have no Say in any of the municipal bodies because they live outside the boundaries, Sharen said that Mary Morrice summed up the situation best when she noted that it really boils down to where the residents look for their community and added that she felt her tax dollars should go to Grand Bend because that is her community. The next meeting scheduled by the resort council is with residents of Stephen Township who reside in Oakwood Park and along Highway 21 north. After the series of meetings is completed, Sharen said a report would be compiled and another general meeting would be held to discuss that report with those who have attended the sessions. C.
