Wanton church women elect new slates By MRS. E, SUMMERS GRANTON At the United Church Rev. Elwood Morden conducted the service for the third. Sunday of Advent, Preceding the regular worship the congregation joined in the singing of carols led by the Senior and Junior choirs. Mrs. Robert Hardie, president of the general U.C.W. performed the ceremony of lighting the third candle in the Advent Wreath which denoted Joy. Rev. Morden's sermon was a dram"atization of Henry Van Dyke's story "The Other Wiseman". This was the story of a member of the "Magi" who was to have joined the three wisemen on the journey to Bethlehem to see the New King, but was delayed because he stopped to care for a sick man he found lying by the roadside. When this wise man finally reached his destination, Joseph and Mary had fled taking the infant Jesus with them. It was announced that December 18 was White Gift Sunday and on the same day the annual C.G.I.T. and Explorer Vesper Service will be held in the United Church at 7:30 p.m. By MISS ELLA MORLOCK CREDITON Tuesday evening a Christmas party for seniors, prepared by the Women's Institute, was held in The Sunday Morning service at St. Thomas Anglican Church was cancelled owing to the weather conditions. U.C.W. Units Meet Unit 1 of the UCW met at the United Church Wednesday af- ternoon with Miss Mabel McNaughton presiding and opening the meeting with a Christmas hymn "Away in a Manger" followed by a short devotional. Several items of business were discussed, the treasurer's report was very encouraging. Unit 1 with the help of donations for catering to a 50th wedding an- niversary, and the proceeds from the bazaar, has far exceeded their allocation fund for the year. Everyone contributed to the program with readings, poems, stories of Christmas in other lands, and a carol. Miss McNaughton was presented with a Christmas corsage in ap- preciation of her leadership for the last two years. The meeting closed with the singing of "Silent Night". Everyone had contributed to the meal which followed, a pot luck dinner. the Community Hall, Rev. Armin Schlenker offered prayer before tile meal. Following dinner, Mrs. GE,,rald Dearing conducted the program. A minute's silence was observed to honour the seniors who had passed away during the year. Wilmer Wein brought greetings from the men's social club. Bob Heywood and Glenn Hodgins provided musical numbers, and Mrs. Harvey Hodgins and Glenn led in the singing of Christmas songs. Rev. George Anderson, Exeter, showed slides of Ireland and Bermuda. Mrs. Hodgins in- troduced the guest speaker and Mrs. Cliff Kenney thanked him, presenting to him a poinsettia plant. All seniors present received a gift from the men's social club. The song "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" brought the happy evening to a close. Social Club Sunday afternoon about 200 children gathered in the gaily decorated Community Hall for the annual Christmas party sponsored by the men's social club. Films were shown, Santa Claus appeared, and a gift , of candy was given to each child. Church In the Sunday morning service at Zion United Church Reg Fink- beiner continued to trace the genealogy of Christ through the Old Testament. Steven Lightfoot assisted him by lighting the third purple candle of the Advent wreath. Rev. Bruce Pierce brought a message on "Is Christmas Too Costly". Preparation is con- tinuing for next Sunday evening's presentation of a junior concert and a cantata at 7:30. Personals Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Lamport have returned from a trip to Mexico where they toured Acapulco, Taxco and Mexico City. Lloyd, on a deep sea fishing expedition, caught an eight foot sail fish, and has a picture to prove it! On their return they en- countered at Baltimore the woes brought to us by last week's storm. Mr. Turnbull, Mrs. Lamport's father, has been at Walkerton with a brother. When Mrs. Lamport phoned Sunday, she learned that at Walkerton there is only an inch of snow. Unit 4 Unit 4 met at the home of Mrs. Clifford Waters Wednesday evening with Mrs, Nelson Tate presiding and opening the meeting with a reading per- taining to Christmas. The roll call was answered with a seasonal verse. After several items of business was taken care of, the election of officers took place, The following members were elected for the next 2 years: president, Mrs, N. Tate; vice-president, Mrs. J. Kerr; secretary"-treasurer and press reporter, Mrs. G. Dann; social conveners, Mrs. N. Riddell and Mrs. H, Wissel; Sunshine convener, Mrs, A. Torrens; pianist, Mrs, C. Gowan. Mrs. Reg Crawford and Mrs. A Crockett were in charge of the program, Mrs, Crawford gave an interesting account of Christmas traditions in Germany. Mrs, F, Dykes and Mrs. G. Dann assisted the hostess to serve a delicious lunch. Santa Is Coming To the Fireha II Wednesday evening December 21 all children of the community are invited to a Christmas party and sleighride sponsored by the Granton volunteer firemen at the firehall. Santa will be there, Very young children must be accompanied by an adult. Sorry I have no personals this week. Nobody was visiting unless it was their neighbors, but we are all gradually digging ourselves out. Snow is very lovely and makes everywhere a fairyland, if there is not too much of it.
