Hot and heavy action in the novice houseleague
After tie, Hawks break loose
with two high scoring games
The recent undefeated streak
of the Exeter Hawks in the
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" grouping continued
Friday night but it came close to
an end.
On home ice at the South Huron
Rec Centre the Hawks mere
forced to score three goals in the
third period to overcome an early
4-1 Lucan Irish lead to gain a 4-4
tie, In their next two games, the
Hawks had no trouble in staying
in the win column.
Saturday night in Tavistock,
the Hawks scored early and often
to dispose of the Tavistock
Braves quite handily by a score
of 14-3.
Tuesday night in Seaforth the
Exeter club triumphed by a score
of 8-4 to pick up five of a possible
six points this week.
This week the Hawks will be in
action on two occasions and both
games are at the South Huron
Rec Centre. Friday night the
Mitchell Hawks will be in for an
8:30 p.m. contest and Sunday
night the Seaforth Centennaires
will supply the opposition. Game
time is 7:30 p.m.
In Tavistock, Saturday, Matt
Muller led the Hawks scoring
attack with a four goal per-
formance. He also added one
assist.
In the first period, Muller
scored on an unassisted effort
and Jamie Caldwell converted a
pass from Brian Taylor.
The Hawks came out flying in
the middle period and were able
to fire seven successful shots at
the Tavistock net.
Brian Taylor was the only
double scorer in this period for
the Exeter club. His scoring
plays were assisted by Don
McKellar, Jim Ferguson and
Steve Jennison,
Fred Mommersteeg counted
once on passes from Matt Muller
and Randy Fisher and Jamie
Caldwell registered with assists
going to Brian Taylor and Dave
Kinsman.
Steve Jennison hit on an
unassisted effort; Brion Penhale
counted on passes from Brad
Taylor and Randy Parsons and
Matt Muller completed a scoring
play with Ken Pinder and Fred
Mommersteeg,
In the third period, Matt Muller
completed his four goal effort
with two successful shots, One
goal came on a solo dash and the
other was set up by Mom-
mersteeg and Pinder.
Randy Fisher scored on a pass
from Jamie Caldwell; Ken
T''nder converted Fred Mom-
mersteeg's pass and Brad Taylor
completed a three-way com-
bination with Randy Parsons and
Steve Jennison.
The Hawks held a wide edge in
territorial play and this showed
on the shots on goal record at 60
to 22. Steve Beer was in goal for
the Hawks and held a shutout
until 13 minutes of the second
period.
Mommersteeg gets four,.
Fred Moinmersteeg paced the
Hawks scoring attack in
Tuesday's win over Seaforth with
a four goal performance. Next in
line with a two goal effort was
Brian Taylor while single goals
were fired by Jamie Caldwell and
Matt Muller.
Ken Pinder picked up two
assists on Mommersteeg's
scoring while Matt Muller gained
a pair of assists and Dave Kin-
sman and Steve Jennison each
helped set up one score,
Jim Ferguson assisted on both
Taylor scores and Jamie Cald-
well helped on one. Matt Muller
scored on an unassisted-.effort
and Jim Ferguson and Brian
Taylor assisted on Caldwell's
marker.
The Hawks fired 59 shots at the
Seaforth net while Randy Lovie
in the Exeter goal faced a total of
35 shots.
Come From Behind
Although the Hawks scored the
first goal of the game Friday
against Lucan, the Irish roared
back and were in front 4-1 at the
end of the second period.
Randy Parsons put the Hawks
ahead 1-0 at 6:01 of the first
period on passes from Phil
Knight and Brian Taylor then the
Irish dominated the scoring for
the next period and a half.
At 8:48 of the first Cec Nickles
converted a pass from Jerry
Jongeneelen and with only 58
seconds left Jim McGuire
completed a three-way effort
with Perry Knee and Cec Nickles
on a power play.
In the second session, the Irish
increased their lead on suc-
cessful shots by Brad Taylor and
Jerry Jongeneelen. Cec Nickles
and Garry Herr assisted on both
goals.
The third period was a second
short of being a minute old when
Steve Jennison chalked up the
second Eiceter goal of the night on
a potweiPlay started by Randy
Fishe'`fland Matt Muller.
Brian Taylor cut the Lucan
margin to a single goal at 5:27
with assists going to Jamie
' Caldwell and Steve Jennison and
Randy Fisher fired what proved
to be the tying goal with just
more than six minutes remaining
on a pass from Steve Jennison.
Scott McNair was in goal for
Lucan and Randy Lovie was
between the pipes for the Hawks.

The number of losses suffered
by the Ltican-Ilderton Jets in the
Ontario Hockey Association
Continental senior league this
year rose to an even dozen over
the weekend,.
In Freston Friday night, the
Jets came up with one of their
better performances for two
periods but bowed to the Preston
Jesters 5-3.
Sunday night in Woodstock the
club held their own for all but
the second period. In the middle
frame, the Woodstock Royals
scored 11 times On their way to an
easy 14-8 victory,
The only action for the Jets this
week comes Friday night at the
liderton arena when the Stratford
Ferths will be in for an 5:15 p.m.
contest.
Jets manager Don Urbstiott
suggests Friday's game will be 0
battle for last place or the last
playoff position.
Close first period
In Sunday's game, Ed Robb
scored for the Jets in the first
period as Woodstock took a 2-1
edge on the scoreboard.
Gary Ferra and Ray Love
made the only replies for the Jets
In the second period while the
Royals broke loose with 11 suc-
cessful shots. Both LA goals
came on power plays.
The Jets were able to cut the
gaal deficit soinevvhat in the third
period but not enough to come
close to winning.
Gary Ferra scored twice in the
final session to complete a bat
trick effr,:t and single goals were
fired by Scott Graham, Rep,
McCutcheon and Ray Love,

In the Friday loss to the
Preston Jesters, the Jets were
only able to score one goal in each
period.
