EXETER,
The Exeter minor hockey
teams gained an even split in
their annual minor hockey day at
the rec centre, Saturday, while
two of the teams which won, went
on to post victories in regular
Shamrock league action on
Sunday.
The Exeter bantams completed
their play in the annual Ilderton
tournament and made a
creditable showing as they ended
up the silver medalists.
After ousting Stoneybrook in
their opener last week, the local
squad returned for a battle with
Strathroy on Saturday afternoon.
Strathroy opened the scoring
on a breakaway in the first period
and then added a power play goal
in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
However, Exeter caught fire in
the final period and came up with
four straight tallies to win by a 4-2
margin.
Dave Jackson started the
fireworks at the 9:18 mark of the
final period and Dave Newton
scored the equalizer with six
minutes remaining.
The teams battled on even
terms until Allan Gaiser potted
the winner with just over a
minute remaining and then Dave
Shaw picked up the insurance
counter.
Gaiser drew assists on two of
the goals for a three-point total,
while single assists were
recorded by Tom Coates,
Newton, Dave Underwood and
Rick Lindenfield.
In the championship round, the
locals squared off with the
powerful Mooretown squad who
had easily disposed of their op-
position in earlier games.
The teams went scoreless until
the final minute of the middle
frame when a pass-out from
behind the net bounced off the
goal post into the Exeter net.
Mooretown added another tally
in the third while the Exeter
shooters just missed on several
good scoring attempts.
Members of the squad
receiving the silver medals were
Rich Fletcher, Peter Parsons,
Tom Coates, Rick Lindenfield,
Dave Bell, Pete Tuckey, Kevin
Parsons, Bill Glover, Dave
Jackson, Wayne Smith, Allan
Gaiser, Dave Newton, Dave
Underwood, Ed Willis and Dave
Shaw. Jack Fuller coaches the
team and the assistants are Bob
Fletcher and Jack Underwood.
Win Pair
The Exeter midgets had an
easy time in disposing of a pair of
old area rivals in their two
weekend games. On Saturday,
they trounced the Hensall-Zurich
combines by a 9-0 margin and

then came back on Sunday to post
a 5-0 verdict over Lucan.
Despite being short-handed for
the minor hockey day activities,
the locals didn't run out of steam
in their battle with the Hensall-
Zurich squad and they scored five
goals in the final period to win
going away.
Dave Cann paced the scoring
attack with a hat trick per-
formance while Preston Dearing,
who was named most colorful
player, added a pair. Single
tallies came off the sticks of Jeff
Fuller, Brian Mercer, Doug
Brooks and Dave,Atthill.
All the Exeter players helped
on at least one goal. Brooks drew
four assists and Dearing had
three to lead in that department.
On Sunday, the Exeter midgets
scored four times in the first
period and then coasted to their
second straight shut-out as they
hosted Lucan.
The scoring was evenly split
with goals being triggered by
Preston Dearing, Jeff Fuller,
Dave Bogart, Doug Brooks and
Brian Mercer.
Brooks and Mercer also picked
up an assist each, while helping
out on the other three goals were
Larry Dawson, Wayne Parsons
and Dave Bell.
Keep It Going •
The Exeter Pee Wees ran their
win streak to five straight as they
came up with a pair of victories
over the weekend. On Saturday
they trimmed St. Marys II by a 3-
0 verdict and then posted a 4-3
win over Lucan on Sunday.
Peter Dearing and Doug
Cooper shared netminding
honors on Saturday to gain the
shut-out.
Chris Van Gerwen opened the
scoring for Exeter on a play with
Darren Vandergunst and Brent
Atthill and then Steve Batten
upped the margin to two goals
when he finished off a play with
Scott Brintnell and Dave Hayter.
John Kernick, who was named
most colorful player for the
locals, finished the scoring on a
solo effort in The second period.
Sunday's contest with Lucan
was a nip and tuck affair right to
the final whistle.
Jeff Shipley gave the vistors a
1-0 lead in the first, but Exeter
came back in the second with
goals by Steve Laithwaite and
Chris Van Gerwen to take a 2-1
lead. Doug Scott, John Kernick
and Darren Vandergunst drew
assists on the tallies.
Lucan's Al Craig knotted the
count late in the middle stanza
and then Exeter came back with
two more early in the third to
take what appeared to be a
comfortable margin.
However, Lucan pulled their
goalie in favor of an extra at-
tacker and pulled to within one
goal and almost got the equalizer
before the final buzzer.
John Kernick and VanGerwen
scored Exeter's final markers,
while Jamie Hodgins scored for
the visitors.
Lose again
The Exeter bantam II team
scored the first and last goal in
their battle with St. Marys H on
minor hockey day, but the
visitors netted four in between to
post a 4-2 margin.
Jim Siddall fired Exeter's first
marker on a play with Scott
Pincombe in the first two minutes
and Steve Prout added the second
tally in the final two minutes on a
play with Trevor Boyle.
Mike Murray was named
Exeter's most colorful player in
the contest,
Drop pair
The Exeter atoms had their
unbeaten streak snapped by
Parkhill in Saturday's action at
the rec centre, and then they
dropped their second in a row in
Lambeth, Sunday.
Parkhill dominated play to post
a 3-0 verdict and only some
stellar netminding by Jim Lewis
and Rick Gilfillan kept the score
as close as it was, Lewis was
named as Exeter's most colorful
player with his superb play in the
first half of the game.
Steve Griffeth• scored twice for
the visitors, while Chris
Tiedeman added the other.
Playing in Lambeth, Sunday,
the Exeter crew had a lapse in
the middle stages and ended up
on the short end of a 5-2 count.
Steve Gould started the locals
off on the right foot when, he
' finished off a play with Scott
Lovie, and then after Lambeth
had knotted the count, Lovie
came back to bat in a puck in the
crease to give Exeter another
lead. Jeff Pfaff drew the assist on
that one.
From that point on, the hosts
swung into high gear and
dominated play to post the win.

We receive weekly statistics for the Ontario Hockey
Association Continental senior league from statistician
Nick Martin and they usually contain interesting informa-
tion.
This week Nick informs that 14 players are in their six-
th season with their original club since the league was
organized for the 1972-73 season.
The only members of the Lucan-Ilderton Jets to play in
all six- seasons are this year's captain Barry Baynham and
Jamie Robb,
While talking about the Continental loop, the newest
team in the league the Petrolia Squires continue to impress
everyone. They scored a 7-2 Sunday night win over the Lon-
don Kings. It ran their season record to 16 victories in as
many games.
They remain undefeated and according to Exeter
Hawks manager Fred Mommersteeg who took in Sunday's
game, "It will be a long time before they suffer a loss. They
play just like a NHL team."
At the other end of the ledger, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets
are suffering through their worst season in six. To date they
have won only one game while losing an even dozen.
Jets manager Don Urbshott told us Monday morning,
"We are probably two players short of having a competitive
team. We are in the rebuilding stages and it's tough to get a
team up after losing so many."
He added, "We have the potential. Friday night in
Preston they played extremely well except for about 10
minutes in the third period. I guess we have to take our
lumps once and awhile."
The Jets will be at home at the Ilderton arena Friday
night at 8:15 against the Stratford Perths who are suffering
through lean times. About Friday's game Urbshott com-
mented, "It will be a battle for last place or for the last
playoff spot."
Neither Stratford or the Jets have been able to win any
games away from home.
The previous record for consecutive wins in the Con-
tinental was 14 games run off by the L-I Jets before this
year's strong Petrolia team came along.
In 13 games this year, the Jets have scored only 37 goals
while giving up 97 goals to the opposition. It is the worst
goals for and against record in the league.
Another big game
One of the most important games so far this year for
the Exeter Hawks in the OHA Junior "D" league will take
place at the South Huron Rec Centre when the Mitchell
Hawks will supply the opposition,
It will be a battle for first place in the western group-
ing. At the moment the Mitchell club has lost only two
games while the Hawks have lost on three occasions.
The Hawks lost some of their high scoring power Fri-
day night as they had to scramble back with three third
period goals to tie the Lucan Irish at 4-4.
Sunday night the Hawks regained their high scoring as
they swamped the Tavistock Braves 14-3. It was the fourth
time in their last five starts that the Hawks had reached 10
or more goals.
Notes from the NHL
A week ago we read an article in the Hockey News
stating that reports on Bob Prince, the new Pittsburgh
Penguins broadcaster were so bad it's a wonder he's still
doing games.
Having heard Prince do major league baseball games
for many years we thought the article was tough on the
veteran Prince. That was until Saturday night.
Appearing on the CBC network Saturday night follow-
ing the Leaf game, Prince interviewed the newest Penguin
Peter Mahovlich. In addition to concocting poor questions,
Prince did not pronounce the former Canadien star's name
properly.
Canadian coaches
Although the number of Canadians playing professional
baseball in the United States is very low, a couple of our
natives have made it to the big time in coaching roles.
London's own Tim Burgess who found a fair amount of
success as a minor league coach and just recently named
director of player personnel for the New York Jets will be
coaching at third base for the Atlanta Braves,
Burgess who is known as Tom in the States played all
his minor ball in London and was a star with the London
Majors when they were kingpins in the Senior Intercounty
league,
While Burgess is directing traffic at third base for the
Braves, Pete Ward will be in the first base coaching box.
Ward played quite a few years at third base with the
Chicago White Sox. He lived in Montreal in the early days of
his life, being the son of former Montreal Maroon
defenceman Jimmy Ward.
HAPPY KIDS — Exeter amd Mitchell baffled to a 3-3 tie in the
novice game at the rec centre, Saturday. Top players on the teams
were Troy McMonn, left of Mitchell, and Dave Russell for the Exeter
Waxers.
