A letter to Santa Claus
Page 6
Dear Santa:
I'm going to be honest-with you.
I haven't been a real good girl all
year long, I tried hard to toe the
line, but I slipped a few times -
nothing serious, mind you. I
won't go into details, because I
know you're a busy man..
Anyway, I hope you take my
honesty into consideration, when
you make your rounds on the
24th; I . know you're an un-
derstanding and generous man.
Just in case you decide to give
me a second chance, I've jotted
down a few things I need. Most of
these items are essentials, Santa,
not luxuries.
Please bring a year's supply of
staples, standard size, and paper
clips, large ones; also a
typewriter eraser and some Bic
pens, fine point with blue ink and
two or three with red ink. I'm
always running out of typewriter
paper and notepads. My
wastebasket usually overflows
with crumpled paper. Inciden-
tally, I could use a new
wastebasket, too.
Please bring a new typewriter
ribbon, and if you've got an extra
five minutes, would you put it on
for me? You're probably much
better at doing things like that
than I am. I'll leave the

What I really need in that
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Klopp of RR
3, Zurich, Ontario celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary
with a family dinner on Saturday
evening, November 26, 1977 at
the Green Forest Motor Hotel,
Grand Bend, Ontario.
The Master of Ceremonies was
Mr. Herb Klopp. Toasts were
given to the bride of 192- and her
bridesmaid (Mrs. Lorne Klopp)
by Dr, H.K. Kalbfleisch, London,
and Dr. Roy Wentzell, Waterloo.
Replies were made by Mr. Lorne
Klopp, Zurich and Dr. James
Whitney, Waterloo. Best wishes
were extended to the couple by
Pastor Blackwell, Mr. Albert
Kalbfleisch, Mr. Wm. Duncan of
CIAG, Goderich, Mr, Karl
Haberer, Miss Margaret
Deichert, Kitchener, Miss Diane
Klopp and Mr. Lambert Klopp
(uncle of the groom of 1927) who
came from Washington D.C. to
be at the celebration. Mr. Jeff
Haywood, London read the
greetings from those unable to
attend the event. Messages of
congratulations were received
by Mr. arid Mrs. Klopp from the
Hon. Jules Leger, Governor
General of Canada, Prime
Minister Trudeau, and Premier
Davis of Ontario. A scroll was
also presented by our member of
parliament, Mr. Jack Riddell,
from the province of Ontario.

the music for the evening. On
Sunday, November 27, a tea was
held at their home from 1-5 p.m.
for relatives and friends.
Christmas is approaching
quickly. If you are planning to
serve turkey for your holiday
meal, it's a good idea to decide
exactly what size you'll need and
what to look for before you buy,
say the. food specialists at the
Ontario Food Council, Ministry
of Agriculture and Food.
Whether the gathering is going
to be' small or large, allow ,"2 to
34 pound per serving. It is wise to
buy more than the exact amount
needed, allow for seconds or lef-
tovers, Leftovers can be used for
sandwiches, in soups, casseroles,
Two matching table lamps,
would be even better,
But, if you give me two lamps,
I'll need tables to set them on. I
prefer the ones that are octagon-
shaped and made of maple or
oak. If you bring end tables, you
might as well add a coffee table
to go with them.
Have you thought about trading
in your sleigh on a van?
In case you get storm-stayed at
my place, you better include
extra pillows, blankets, dishes
and cooking utensils, A cookbook
wouldn't hurt either.
Please bring me some
snowshoes or a snowmobile; I
have a feeling I'll need them this
winter. Better yet, send me to
Florida or Hawaii or the
Bahamas. For a vacation like
that, I'll need a new wardrobe,
If you can't send me on a trip,
bring me a heap of patience. The
supply you brought last year ran
out by the end of January.
Please bring me a green thumb
before all my plants die.
And last but not least, give me
some tips on how to stop my
fifteen-year-old nephew from
abusing the English language,
that I love, with his "don't gots."
Thanks, Santa; I know I can
count on you. Merry Christmas!
Sincerely,
Elaine Townshend
P.S. I'll clean the chimney before
you come, and I promise not to
peek. I'll try even harder to be
good next year; at least you can
be sure I'll be as honest as ever.
I'll leave a big piece of
Christmas cake on the mantle.
P.S. Don't worry! I didn't make
the cake.
salads, or pies. Any turkey that
you don't plan to eat the day
after Christmas should be frozen
right after Christmas dinner.
Turkey meat can be frozen up to
two months.
When buying a turkey, always
look for the Canada Approved or
Canada health inspection stamp
on the tag, `bag, or label. This is
your assurance that the turkey
has been inspected and is safe
and wholesome. Next, look for
the grade name. The most com-
mon grade available is Canada
Grade A. Canada Grade B is as
good eating quality as Grade A,
but is not as well-fleshed or
fattened, Canada Grade Utility
must at least qualify for Canada
Grade B, but may have one or
more of its parts missing.
Turkeys will also be marked as
young or mature. Mature
turkeys, used for egg production
first, are not as tender as young
birds raised for meat only. When
shopping, you'll notice that some
turkeys may be labelled Deep
Basted or Self-Basting. This
means that the turkey has been
injected with vegetable oil or
butter as a basting ingredient to
increase the juiciness of the
cooked turkey. You can get this
same moist quality by buying a
regular turkey and basting it
yourself.
If you plan to buy a fresh
turkey, wait and buy it no more
than 2 or 8 days before you cook
it, If you plan to buy a frozen
turkey, you can buy it now and
store it in the freeZer at — 18°
(0°F) or lower until the time to
thaw it for roasting.
