Pork production is becoming
more specialized and producers
are demanding highly trained
herdspeople to operate their
farms,
To meet the need for this type
of training, the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food sponsors
a homestudy course called Pork
Production.
The course, written by swine
specialists under the direction of
Doug Jamieson of Centralia
College of Agricultural
Technology, is popular among
producers who want to keep
abreast of changes in the in-
dustry says Gary Hutchison, of
the University of Guelph Office of
Continuing Education.
A large part of the course deals
with breeding, and includes a
brief lesson on basic genetic
traits and a discussion of how to
select the animals for heritable
economical traits, Light in-
tensity, which affects fertility in
At Thursday's annual meeting
of the Huron Soil and Crop
Improvement Association, a
rainfall report showed a big
difference in the amount of
rainfall between eight locations
in Perth County and one at
Centralia College of Agricultural
Technology,
In May, the Centralia station
only from 3.75 to 5.59 inches, The
Centralia total was 4.38 inches.
In' July, Centralia listed 2.23
inches while 6.1 inches fell in
Blanshard township. The same
pattern existed in August with 3.5
inches at CCAT and 8.1 inches in
Blanshard.
Rainfall was high in September
ranging from 5.4 inches in
Wallace township to 9,1 inches in
Blanshard. The Centralia total
was 6,41 inches.
In October the Centralia
rainfall was 1.74 inches bringing
the seven month growing season
total to 23.54 inches. For the same
period the Blanshard township
total was the highest at 33,4 in-
ches.

The price for market lambs is
about one-quarter of what it is in
Canada. This ,makes the price of
wool worth about one-half of the
total sheep product.
showed 2.99 inches'of rain while
the rainfall at E. Crago's in
Blanshard township measured
only .7 inches.
The wettest spot in June was in
Wallace township at 2.5 inches
while Centralia recorded only .29
inches.
There was little variance in
rainfall airiounts in June ranging
gilts and sows, is discussed in
detail.
The feeding section of the
course goes beyond diet for-
mulation, feed processing, and
feeding methods. A study of
nutrient digestion, function, and
requirements will give students
confidence to feed pigs.
Herd health is essential in any-
livestock operation. Although
preventative medicine based on
superior total management is the
key message in this course, cause
and prevention of diseases in
swine herds also are examined.
Other course topics include
swine housing, equipment
alternatives and costs, buying
and selling pigs, production
records, and financial in-
formation.

Huron County look pretty lush."
Soils and crops specialist for
Huron end Perth Pat Lynch gave a detailed report on a number of
research projects held in the two
counties during 1977,
The bindweed control project
on the Usborne township farm of
Alvie Lovell was not as suc-
cessful as first thought,
Lynch commented, "Three
treatments appeared to give good
`,control by September, 1976,
however, one year later it was
obvious the chemicals only killed
the tops the previous year and
most of the bindweed regrew."
On the subject of these tests,
Mike Miller said, "We report on
what actually happens and not
what we would like to have
happen."
A number of Huron and Perth
farmers co-operated with the
University of Guelph in a bean
insect and insecticide survey
under the direction of Dr. Cliff
Ellis The granular insecticides
tested by Dr. Ellis in 1976 were
effective for controlling bean
insects, but only for the first 31
days after application.
Since major insect infestations
occur a month after planting and
granular insecticides are only
effective in the plant for the first
month, therefore, granular in-
secticides need not be applied at
planting time. Foliar insecticidei
can be effectively applied later in
the season if problems result.
A herbicide applicator
designed by Jim O'Toole and
Fred Bowers of Centralia College
of Agricultural Technology was
tested in bean fields for con•
trolling milkweed. The applicator
consisted of a felt roller mounted
on bicycle wheels.
The applicator was pushed
through the white bean fields and
herbicide was rolled off the felt
roller onto any milkweed plants
that were higher than the beans.
The chemical used was Round-
up.
