Irish get
two wins
The Lucan Irish won their only
two starts this week in the
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior 'D' western grouping to
run their season record to seven
victories'and four losses,
Wednesday night, the Irish
doubled the score on the
Tavistock Braves at the Lucan
arena and Tuesday night, also at
home the Lucan club scored a 5-3
win over the newest team in the
league from Bothwell.
Duffing the next week the Irish
will be in action on no less than
four occasions. Last night,
Wednesday they played host to
Seaforth and Friday night they
travel to Exeter to play the
league leading Exeter Hawks.
Tuesday, the Irish go to Mitchell
and Wednesday they will be at
home to Tavistock.
In Tuesday's contest, the Irish
built up a 3-1 lead after the first
period of play and continued that
margin to game's end as
each team scored one goal in the
final two periods.
Cec Nickles, Randy Kraul and
Dean Densmore were the
marksmen for coach Bill Ban-
nerman's club in the initial
session, Marty Wraith counted in
the middle frame for the winners
and Gerry Jongeneelen was the
third period scorer.

The Exeter Minor hockey
teams enjoyed a successful week
as they posted five wins and a tie
in Shamrock league action and in
one tournament.
The latter win was recorded by
the Exeter bantams in the
Ilderton tournament. They
scored a decisive 6-3 win over
Stoneybrook in the first game of
the Ilderton tournament.
Exeter will return to actipn this
weekend in that event,
The locals jumped into a
commanding 4-0 lead in the first
period of Friday night's game
and were never seriously
threatened after that,
Allan Geiser paced the scoring
attack with a pair of tallies.
Single markers were picked up
by Pete Tuckey, Wayne Smith,
Rick Lindenfield and Dave
New ton,
Dave Underwood registered
two assists in the game, while
helping out with single tallies
were Tom Coates, Lindenfield,
Newton, Smith and Dave
Jackson.
In' Sunday action at the rec
centre, two goals by Dave Bell in
the last five minutes of the game
pulled the Exeter bantams to a 3-
2 victory over Strathroy,
The visitqrs jumped into 4, 1-0
lead early in the game and Rick
Lindenfield got that one back
before Strathroy again moved to
a one-goal lead,
Bell dented the twine with the
equalizer on a play with Lin-
denfield and the two combined
again with less than two minutes
remaining to get the clincher.
Get Three Points
The Exeter Atoms ran their
unbeaten streak to nine games
when they scored a one-sided 8-0
win in Dorchester on Wednesday,
and then held Belmont to a 3-3 tie
at the rec centre, Sunday.
The locals scored three goals in
the first two minutes of the game
in Dorchester and then coasted to
their victory.
Scott Lovie was the top
marksman with a hat-trick
performance. Adding singles
were Sean Whiteford, Gary
MacDonald, Steve Gould, Jeff
Pfaff and Scott Bogart,
George Pratt picked up two
assists and singles were
registered by Tim Easterbrook
and Steve Gould.
Jim Lewis and Rick Gilfillan
shared the shut-out honors in the
Exeter net,
On Sunday, the atoms kept
battling back to record their tie
with Belmont.
They spotted the visitors an
early lead and then Scott Lovie
and George Pratt fired markers
to give Exeter a 2-1 margin. The
two assisted on each other's
goals,
'Belmont then came back with
two straight markers, but Allan
Pym found the range near the
midway mark of the final period
on a play with Bill Fisher to get
the equalizer.
Rick Gilfillan saved the game
for the Exeter crew in the final
seconds when he made a.diving
catch of a puck headed for an
open corner.
Three straight
The Exeter pee wees, after a
rather slow start in Shamrock
play, recorded their third
straight triumph when they
scored a 3-2 win over Belmont on
Sunday.
They jumped into a 3-0 lead in
the contest and then had tohold on

for quitters
The International Plowing
Match comes to Huron next year
and with it comes an opportunity
for people who are able to do
quilting to make some extra
money.
Three prizes totalling $225 are
being offered for the three top
quilts,
The quilt competition is being
sponsored by the ladies com-
mittee of the match and it is con-
cerned that everybody across the
county, who is interested, learns
details.of the event.
In order to be entered the quilt
is to be an original quilt design
depicting some aspect of the 1978
International Plowing Match and
have a minumum size 66" X 78".
The entries will be judged on
originality of design and quality
of quilting. The competition is
open to all residents and groups
in Huron County,
There is no entry fee but only
tickets are to be obtained from
Mrs. Dorothy Coultes, R,R, 5,
Brussels before September 1,
1978. The quilts will be judged at
Seaforth Fall Fair and entries
must be delivered to the Fair by
12 noon, September 14 for judg-
ing. Prize money is divided, first
$100, second $75. and third $50.

Get Shut-out
The Exeter midget goaltending
duo of Steve Wells and Doug
Hoffman scored a shut-out in the
first game on the Sunday
program at the rec centre.
The local crew posted a 3-0 win
over Belmont.
Exeter took a one-goal lead
near the end of the second period
on a marker registered by Dan
Bell, who blasted a low 'slap shot
into the corner on a play with
Doug Brooks and Larry Dawson.
Jeff Fuller then pulled the
game out of reach of the visitors
with two quick tallies near mid-
`' way mark of the final period.
Larry Dawson drew assists on
both Of the tallies, while helping
out on one each were Steve
Pearce and Dan Bell,
Novice lose
Despite being on the short-end
of the score, the Exeter Novice
team gave a good account of
themselves in a 2-0 hiss to Lucan
at the rec centre on Friday.
It was the first game for the
local squad and only two players
on the team had any all-star
experience.
John MacDonald fired Lucan's
first marker on a play with Scott
Finlayson, while Todd Ilayter
netted the other tally on a solo
effort in the third period.

Jets lose two games,
odd more plavers
Friday night, the jets suffered
a 94 loss at the hands of the
league leading Petrone Squires
in Petrolia and Sunday back in
Ilderton the score was 10-2 for
Petrolia, The Squires, the newest
team in the Continental league
are undeafeated in their first 14
games.
This week, the Jets will be in
action on two occasions in an
attempt to get back in winning
form. They travel to Preston
Friday night and will be in
Woodstock Sunday night to meet
the Royals.
Jets manager Don Urbshatt
continues on the lookout for
additional players to strengthen
his club. In the past two week in
addition AP three members of the
defunct Port Stanley team,
Urbshott has signed Gary Fera,
cut by the London Kings; Ray
Love from the University of
Western Ontario, goalie Kevin
Lightfoot, a graduate from the
Lucan juniors and enticed Brian
Murphy in trying a comeback,
In Sunday's contest, Petrolia
took a 4-1 lead after the first
period of play and were never'

Brian Murphy scored the first
L-I goal at 13.12 of the first period
on passes from newcomers Gary
Fera and Ray Love.
At nine seconds of the middle
frame, Jamie Robb ended the L-I
scoring for the night by con-
verting passes from Barry
Baynliam and Brian Murphy,
Jets outshot
Friday's game in Petrolia saw
the Squires hold a good edge in
territorial play and were ahead
on shots on goal by a wide margin
of 44 to 16.
The Jets were able to score
only one goal in each period.
Gary Fera counted in the first
period on a breakaway
unassisted,
In the second period, Scott
Graham tapped in a' pass from
Steve Proctor and in the final
session, Gary Fera banged in a
rebound on a shot by Barry
Baynham. Ray Love also
assisted.
Midgets capture
one-sided game
The Hensall-Zurich Midgets
handled the Alma-Logan squad
easily, with an 8-1 victory last
Tuesday.
Kerry Bedard started the
scoring for the home team with a
goal at the 1:12 mark of the first
period. Steve Grainger and,Grant
Love assisted.
Eight minutes later, Carl Wilde
scored to give the H-Z squad a 2-0
lead with Rob Pryde and Bryan
Baker assisting.
In the second, Alma-Logan
scored two goals with a score in
between by Bedard of Hensall-
Zurich. Grainger and Love added
the assists.
H-Z dominated the third period
with five straight goals scored.
Wilds scored at the 1:43 mark
with Brad McBride and Greg
Kirk aiding the effort.
The local midget club then
went on a scoring rampage with
three goals in less than three
minutes. Grainger, Mike Haggit
and Dave Vanstone put the,game
out of reach, with Love, Bob
IViommersteeg and Kevin Parker
assisting,
RECOVER CAR
A car reported missing over
two months ago was located by
the Exeter OPP this week.
It was found under four feet of
,water ,at a bridge site in Hay
swamp at lot 5, concession 6.
The Ihhicle had been reported
missing by a Stratford man, who
advised police he had suffered
amnesia and couldn't remember
his whereabouts.
He said the only thing he could
remember about the incident was
walking out of a bush in the Dash-
. wood area,
