Help the minors
This Saturday, all participants in the Exeter Minor
Hockey Association program will have the opportunity to
show their talents on the ice.
All boys registered including those in houseleague will
participate in nine games beginning at 12 noon at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
This is the one chance each year for parents and all
minor hockey supporters to drop in to the arena anytime
during any of the nine games for one admission charge.
The green Minor Hockey Day cards on sale this week
for one dollar is the only admission charge payable.
With increased costs in ice time and equipment it's im-
portant to have a good attendance at Saturday's activities.
Proceeds from Minor Hockey Day are a large portion of the
monies used to finance the local program.
The executi/e of the EMHA is one of the most active
and enthusiastic in the country. Let's give them a hand by
attending Saturday's activities anytime between noon and 9
p.m. The one dollar admission is very reasonable.
Car came in handy
A lot of football fans in this area were happy with the
outcome of Sunday's Grey Cup game and especially the
selection of Glenn Weir as the top defensive player.
Weir has been a popular guest at each of the first four
Exeter Lions club Sportsmen's dinners and is expected to
be back for the 1978 dinner slated for Februai, 7 at the
South Huron Rec Centre.
The prize for being chosen the defensive star was an
automobile and that probably comes in handy for Weir. His
auto was stolen in Montreal a few days before the big game.
Weir had two chances to run the ball Sunday after
recovering fumbles. On the one occasion he appeared to be
going the wrong way, but, what can you expect? Linemen
are not supposed to know what to do when they get the ball.
Congratulations, Glenn on a super performInce. Made
a lot of people forget a fellow by the name of Kepley.
New sports annual
More than 80 amateur and professional sports and lists
of their current Canadian champions from bowling to barrel
jumping and snooker to skateboarding are among the'sub-
jects covered in the Canadian Sports Annual, a unique new
224-page softbound book from Corpus Publishers, Toronto.
The first reference and general interest book to
catalogue all facets of nationally organized Canadian sport
government structure, support and Games associations,
governing bodies, plus the reigning individual and team
champions, the Canadian Sports Annual provides both an
authoritative reference source and a ready arbiter of in-
evitable arguments about "Who won what?"
Aquatics, gymnastics, hang gliding, northern native
games — they're all there — with a description of who
organizes. governs, and competes in the national cham-
pionships. For the football fan to the Frisbee freak, and for
spectators or participants, the Canadian Sports Annual is a
mine of useful information.
With an Introduction on the history of organized sport in
Canada by the Honourable Iona Campagnolo, Minister of
State for Fiqiess and Amateur Sport, and well illustrated
with compelling news photos of champions in action, the
Canadian Sports Annual is available at better bookstores
across Canada, or by prepaid mail direct from Corpus
Publishers, 151 Bloor St. West, Suite 250, Toronto, M5S 1St
A cheque for $10.50 will cover the cost of the book and all
mailing and handling charges.
Spring will come
Maybe a few notes on baseball will make us forget the
wintry weather of the weekend and what probably lies
ahead for the next four or five months.
The Toronto Blue Jays will start their second season in
the American baseball league on April 7 in Detroit and will
open their home season at CNE Stadium one week later
against the same Tigers.
The schedule makers must have a short memory and
forgotten about the terrible weather in Toronto last April.
The Jays are scheduled at home every day in April after the
14th, "
Several new features this season includes 4 p.m. star-
ting times for seven weekday games in April against the
Yankees, White Sox and Indians.
As was the case last year, the Jays will play their 81
home games on 77 dates. Doubleheaders are scheduled
against the Yankees May 21; Brewers June 14; Orioles June
27 and Indians July 2.
The Toronto team will play 25 Saturday and Sunday con-
tests and a total of 40 night games.
The Blue Jays are holding the line on ticket prices from
last year both individual and season tickets. General admis-
sion stays at $2 with the top price remaining at $6.50.
The Detroit Tigers who have been known in the past for
the best admission prices are upping their prices for the
1978 season, but, they will still be lower than Toronto.
Next year, Tiger tickets will be $6 for a box seat, $5 for
reserved and $3.50 for general admission. Bleacher seats
will now cost $2.
