Barker of the Lucan 0.P.P. detachment. "Now there is none." Speaking to the Ailsa Craig Business Association meeting Thursday, Constable Barker urged the business community to take steps to help prevent crime in the community. "Without the assistance of the public, no police force can be effective," he stressed. A number of slides compiled by the O.P.P. entitled, "Protect Your Property" were shown to the group, outlining various protective measures that can, and should, be taken by everyone. Advice was given to lock your windows and doors whenever you are not at home. An unlocked door or window is simply an invitation to anyone to enter and help themselves to any valuables around the home. To help combat theft there are electric engraving pens and invisible markers available with which to mark items of value with your name or social in- surance number so they can be traced back to the owner when ONTARIO HOUSING Ontario CORPORATION Is Accepting Applications In ZURICH, ONTARIO Rents Are Geared To Income MINISTRY OF HOUSING CA.° Tne group was =mete tee:. extended an invitation re return next month to entertain the residents at a special Christmas 0.$ dinner being planned in the Activity Centre . picked up by the police. "A number of years ago the insurance companies originated the idea of the engraving pens," explained Constable Barker "and asked the police to co-operate in a program of its use." These pens are available to the public from insurance agents and are used to identify personal property, thus discouraging thieves from taking it. The invisible markers are available through a number of retail outlets. When you purchase the pen signs are included stating that items on the premises have been marked with the marker. The writing done by the pen can be read when placed under a special black light by the police who can then return the goods to their owners. Safety deposit boxes were recommended. "Any bonds or currency, or valuables which can be easily placed in a safety deposit box should be left at the bank," warned Constable Barker. He also advocated making a list of all major items with their serial numbers, such as T.V.'s, stereos, etc. And be sure you know your licence number! 'Usually the only record of your licence number is on your ownership papers, which most people keep in the car itself. Without the licence number it is almost impossible to find a stolen car. All items such as bikes, lawn mowers, furniture, etc., should be put away in the garage at night and locked up. "Never leave your keys in a parked car," he advocated. "There are five cases on record in the past two months of such cases." This includes not leaving them in the glove compartment, over the sun visor, or under the seat. If your car is open, the would be thief will check the car for the keys. He cited a case when a woman in Toronto lost her keys recently. Inside the case she had written. her name and address. She received a telephone call from a man informing her he had found her keys, and asked if she would meet him downtown on his coffee break as he lacked transportation to deliver them to her personally. While she was keeping the ap- pointment, her home was burglarized and her keys left in the house for her to find. Never leave your keys around when renovations are being done in your home was also stressed. It may be an invitation to dishonest workmen to have copies rapidly made without your knowledge and give them easy access to your home anytime. Another anti-theft device is an anti-siphoning gadget to prevent anyone siphoning gas from your car. These are available at less than a dollar from local automotive accessory dealers and fit into the tank filler pipe so a hose cannot be fitted into the tank, but allows the gas to flew freely into the tank.. With financial cutbacks there have been police layoffs with rumours of more layoffs to come Constable Barker warned, "People must invest in their own crime prevention devices to safeguard society:* he told the meeting.
