Hawks display picture play passing to win twice •
Scored five goals and picked up
four assists in the two weekend
games.
In both games the Hawks took
early first period leads and were
never seriously threatened
thereafter.
All lines contribute
In Sunday's win over
Tavistock, each of the three
Hawks forward lines were
responsible for at least two goals.
The Hawks hit the scoreboard
at 4:57 of the opening period when
Fred Mommersteeg hit the mark
on a three-way effort with Matt
Muller and Ken Pinder.
Less than two minutes later,
Brad Taylor scored with assists
going to Randy Parsons and
Brion Penhale and at the 18:43
mark the same three youngsters
combined again. This time
Penhale fired the successful shot.
As the first minute of the
second session ticked off, Jamie
Caldwell scored on a play started
by Brian Taylor and Don
McKellar.
Before the middle period was
over, Jim Ferguson converted a
pass from Brion Penhale and
Brian Taylor hit the net with
assists going to Randy Parsons

Bowling Scores
After a reasonably slow start
this year in the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D"
grouping, the Exeter Hawks
came to life this week and turned
in two excellent performances.
Wednesday night in Belmont
the Hawks were on the short end
of a 5-3 score but that ended their
lacksadaisical play.
Friday night at the South
Huron Bee Centre, the Hawks
showed complete dominance
over the Lucan Irish taking a
lopsided 11-2 win. Lucan defeated
the Hawks 5-4 in the first game of
the season.
Sunday night it was the same
story as the Exeter club blasted
the Tavistock Braves by a score
of 10-1 in Tavistock.
In both weekend games, most
of the goals came on three-way
passing picture plays which gave
the opposition goalies very little
chance to avoid being scored on,
At the same time, all three
forward lines were producing the
same type of play which manager
Fred Mommersteeg and coach
Ron Bogart have been expecting.
Mommersteeg's only comment
Monday morning was, "they are
really flying now." He had reason
to be enthused. His son Fred Jr,

Tie exists in
houseleague
Northlander moved into a tie
for first place in the Exeter minor
hockey houseleague, Saturday,
when they nipped Discount
Dave's 4-3.
The loss was the first for
Discount Dave's who hold a share
of the top spot in the four team
league. Each team has two wins.
Mike Murray, Marty Francis,
Kevin Heather and Steve Francis
scored for the winners, while
Brian Blackburn, Brent Atthill
and Ed Cosman replied for
Discount Dave's.
In the opening game on
Saturday, Taylor Motors edged
AVCO by a score of 6-4. Each of
those teams has one win.
Scoring for the winners were
Scott Pincombe, with a pair, Rob
DeKoker, Bruce Shaw, Tim
Easterbrook and Steve Arm-
strong.
Alec Irvine scored a hat-trick
for the losers, while Ken Boer-
sma added the single.
This week's action pits Taylor
Motors (3) against Discount
Dave's (4) at 9:00 a.m., while
Northlander (1) will face AVCO
(2) at 10:30.

In Wednesday's loss to

at the 13 second mark of the first

Belmont led 2-1 after the first

the final session.

Combination with Don. McKellar
and Brad Taylor,
Much has been said this week about the trade between
the Detroit Red Wings and the Birmingham Bulls. It was
the first trade ever between clubs of the WHA and NHL.
To most observers the deal appears to be one which
John Bassett of Birmingham was forced to make due to
financial difficulties.
The Red Wings certainly got the best of the trade. Both
Vaclav Nedomansky and Tim Sheehy should be great ad-
ditions to Ted Lindsay's club.
They gave up Steve Durbano but he won't be missed too
much as any team he has played for during his career
hasn't seen him in very much actual ice action.
In one season at Omaha in the Central league, Durbano
spent 402 minutes in the penalty box. The other new Bull is
Dave Hanson who appeared in the "Slap Shot" movie.
In total the salaries of Nedomansky and Sheehy amount
to close to $250,000 per year.
Bassett made big news for his Ottawa franchise, the
predecessor to the Toronto Toros a few years ago when he
acquired Nedomansky from Czechoslovokia. At that time
Bassett sent undercover agents to Europe and they prac-
tically pried a hole in the Iron Curtain to bring the big
Czech star to Canada,
Big Ned is happy to go to the Wings, he plans to live in
Windsor and continue his pursuit of Canadian citizenship.
The Red Wings under the leadership of Ted Lindsay
and coach Bobby Kromm have showed vast improvement
and the two new acquisitions could make them a conten-
ding team,
Nedomansky has already proved valuable to the Wings.
In a Saturday night game he picked up three assists,
Leafs could add from WHA
The Toronto Maple Leafs could be the second club to
lure stars from the WHA.
In a copyright story in the Toronto Star, Thursday, Jim
Kernaghan said he learned the most dangerous scoring duo
in the World Hockey Association could be wearing blue and
white uniforms next year.
Ulf Nillson and Anders Hedberg have indicated they
would like to play in Toronto. They would certainly be
welcomed by fellow countryman Borje Salming who said,
"Nillson is such a great playmaker and Hedberg has all
that speed."
The three played together on the Swedish national
team before Salming made the move to Toronto.
Hedberg who scored 70 goals for the Winnipeg Jets last
year is considered by many to be the fastest skater in
hockey today and Nillson has been described by Bobby Hull
as having, "the ability to more things with the puck at high
speed than any other player i've ever seen."
Both players signed five year contracts with the Jets
two years ago but after this season they have the option to
negotiate with NHL teams. The Jets reserve the right to
come within $20,000 of any offer they get elsewhere.
Happy Birthday
Monday of this week Foster Hewitt celebrated his 75th
birthday, Foster has probably done more in the past 50 plus
years to promote hockey than any other person in Canada.
Foster still keeps active with occasional appearances
on radio broadcasts of Maple Leaf away games on CKFH,
Toronto, the station he founded some years ago.
A crystal ball look
The largest crowd ever to watch a Grey Cup game
should be in attendance Sunday at Olympic Stadium in
Montreal and millions of other Canadians will be close to
their television sets.
So far this year we have declined making any predic-
tions on football games but shortly after Sunday's western
final, we dusted off the old crystal ball and took a look.
While the Montreal Alouettes were rather fortunate to
get by the Ottawa Roughriders to qualify for the national
final we feel they will win in a very close contest.
Only minutes after deciding the score would be Mon-
treal 25 Edmonton 20 we purchased an Exeter Lions draw
ticket and believe it or not the score was 24-20 for Montreal.
Can't miss.
Okay, here's your chance to make a few bucks by going
out and backing the Eskimos.
Keep the human element
Several controversial plays in the 1977 World Series has
again brought out the idea of using instant replays in check-
ing on close plays.
The guest speakers at two recent Lions club
Sportsmen's dinners in Exeter were major league umpires
and we asked them about this subject, Both Tom Gorman
and Emmett Ashford were quick to taboo use of a replay
machine.
They felt it would be impossible to get the same angle
as the umpire did and it was impossible to replace human
judgement with a mechanical monster.
In a recent issue of the Sporting News, National league
umpires Harry Wendelstedt and Ed Sudol had comments on
replay use.
"Farcial" and "that's crazy" were the comments from
the two umpires.
Wendelstedt said, "Take four different shots from four
different angles and you could get four different versions of
the same play,"
He cited a NBS survey taken over a five year period
which indicated National league umpires were right 99.6
percent of the time.
"I'd imagine people in other professions would be proud
to be right 99 percent of the time. I don't say we don't oc-
casionally miss one."
