Dear Sir:
Last week, friends and
relatives paid tribute to a citizen
of Exeter who was in life a
dynamic and radiant personality.
Although she had lived in
Exeter for only 12 years she was
proud of her town and was often
known to be an outspoken sup-
porter of the historic buildings of
Exeter which she hoped would
remain a part of the history of our
area.
Not that she was against the
addition of new buildings, for she
often remarked on the benefits
the South Huron Recreational
Centre would bring to' all the
people of Exeter and surrounding
area.
It was just that Joyce Monteith
could see the architectural and
historic beauty in the stately old
buildings of Exeter — homes, her
church, Trivitt Memorial
Anglican and most of all, the
Exeter Town Hall.
To see the restoration of the
Exeter Town Hall was a delight
for Joyce because she had the
foresight and determination to
believe in the people who lived in
this town and she had no doubt
that when it was completed it
would be a landmark of which we
could all be proud.
It was a great moment for her
when she knew that the belfry
had been restored to its position
at the top of the town hall, How
pleased anil proud she was of the
restoration work which has been
completed.
I consider myself fortunate and
I know my life has been made
richer for having known and
shared a part of Joyce's life.
She brought greatstrength and,
joy to those whd knew her for we
gained in knowledge and
determination in her presence.
Her positive outlook, strong faith
and cheery disposition were
constant companions which she
shared with all who visited her.
The town of Exeter has been
made poorer by her loss but the

progress," To achieve this means
understanding that we are a
scientific civilization.
In practical everyday terms
this means education must
emphasize mathematics,
science, and technology. It
means developing an un-
derstanding of science and a
knowledge of how nature works.
It means a realization that our
economic problems, our
problems in energy, the en-
vironment, pollution control,
disease, starvation, develop-
ment, even the problems of
human cooperation and the
avoidance of destructive war can
be solved only with more
knowledge in the areas of science
and technology not by a retreat
from science.
In philosophical terms it means
an understanding of the- nature
of man, Science explains the
"uniqueness of man". Science
points out that we are "natures
unique experiment to make
rational intelligence prove itself
sounder than reflex." As
Bronowski points out in "The
Ascent of Man", "knowledge is
our destiny."
So, it is not retreat that we
must consider. Man did not
evolve to his present substantial
intellectual level by retreating,
Carl Sagan in his 'Dragons of
Eden' is right on target when he
warns that "we are unlikely to
survive if we do not make full and
creative use of our human in-
felligence",
The main job of education.;
then, is the promotion of this
most uniquely human charac-
teristic, namely our intelligence.
richness of her deeds, thoughts
and memories lives on.
Sincerely,
Mary Moffatt

took their last view of the CN

Another game of hangman...a
few last blanks to fill in on those
crossword puzzles and the
answer to "what did you enjoy
best" jotted down as the bus
bounced its way homeward.
Glancing about after our "pit
stop" at the 401 service centre,
one could see heads starting to
droop and nod. One little gal was
fortunate to have the comforting
lap of a teacher for her tired
head while others had to find
some comfort in each other's
shoulders.
"Oh, he's asleep," our seat
companion murmured as still
another question was aimed in
our direction. Hopefully the
answer that was to have been
elicited was not that impor-
tant...and anyway it was too dark
to write.
Soon we were pulling into our
destination, the youthful
enthusiasm now missing as
parents moved among the tired
bodies to sort out their offsprin
and even the cool night air failed,
to rejuvenate some.
It had been a hig day...a day of
new experiences, new sights,
new sounds...and certainly new
questions.
Seeing the Royal Winter Fair
through a youngster's eyes is an
experience everyone should
have. You see things you've
never seen before and realize
again that enthusiasm is con-
tagious and if you allow yourself
to be swallowed up in that at-
mosphere, you really don't need
an adult-sized pain reliever.
Was that our bus driver's
secret!
Dear Editor: Throughout her illness, which
Cut her life so short, she remain-
ed her witty, exuberant self. Her
faith never wavered, she believ-
ed in the goodness of people and
the goodness of God right up to
the end,
The Reverend George Ander-
son, speaking at her funeral,
summed up her attributes in the
words of St, Paul; "I have fought
a good fight, I have finished my
course, I have kept the faith.
Henceforth, there is laid up for
me a crown of righteousness
which the Lord, the righteous
judge, shall give me..."
Joyce will be greatly missed
but she left a heritage to all who
knew her..,one of courage and
faith.
Last week, Exeter and District
Heritage Foundation lost one of
its charter members when Joyce
Anne Monteith died, Joyce had a
strong belief that we all learn
from the past and she sensed the
need to preserve and keep some
of that past with us.
She sparked the citizens' com-
mittee that was formed to do a
feasibility study of the town hall,
and later, when the Heritage
Foundation was formed she was
one of its staunchest workers. It
was largely due to her drive that
the town hall was saved because
she had that indominable spirit
that denied that something could
not be done. Negativism, she did
not understand; she constantly
accentuated the positive.
This attitude prevailed in all
aspects • of her life. She was
always prepared to go the second
mile, to put a little more effort
into something so that it turned
out to be excellent rather than
mediocre, That was what made
her such an effective teacher as
she probed and prodded the best
out of young minds.
Her enthusiasm and zest made
life exciting and fun for everyone
she was with. Whether she was
working to restore the town hall,
which she loved, or out buying
antiques, which she also loved,
or working for her church and
faith, which she loved best of all,
her enthusiasm was infectious.
To know Joyce was to taste life
at its most exhilara ting best,
