reports that two former Candy
Stripers, Nancy Hern and Julie
Rau are now in registered nurse
training at Victoria Hospital,
London and two others Theresa
Voerman and Charlene' Regier
are nursing assistants at South
Huron.
The Candy Striper program
started at South Huron in June,
1975 with 20 volunteers and hit a
peak of 43 in 1976. About 25 girls
are participating in the current
program.
Over the two and a half year
period, 19 girls have completed
100 hours or more of service while
six have hit the 200 hour mark
and one, Donna Stewart has
logged 300 hours of candy
striping.
In addition to Donna Stewart,
those with 200 hours are Cathy
Fleming, Nancy Hern, Mary
Schlenker, Janet Shapton and
Lenore Coates,
Assisting Mrs. Harrison are
Auxiliary members Helen
Frayne, Alma Godbolt and Lois
Snell. Mrs. Godbolt is in charge of
setting up the candy stripe
scheduling,
Following is a letter written by
a former candy striper Nancy
Hern to the Auxiliary :
I am writing this note to thank
you for letting the Candy Striper
program become part of your
volunteer service.
I can assure ybu, that it is a
most worthwhile project since
my experience with the program
when it started two years ago,
has been nothing but pleasant.
It is not often that people in
smaller communities, especially
teenagers have a chance to
become part of a volunteer
service.
When the Auxiliary first of-
fered the Candy Striper program,
I applied right away.
Since nursing was something I
have always been interested in
since the age of five, I wanted to
become a Candy Striper so I
would really see if nursing was a
profession I could be happy with.
Nothing I came across during
my time as a Candy Striper ever
caused me to change my mind.
I've always enjoyed being with
people, anti working with the
patients and hospital staff
allowed me to expand on my
ability to communicate and help
people.
I believe this program gives
each volunteer girl, some amount
of training, that even if she
doesn't go into nursing, she could
,use that training sometime in her
life.
I know that our local hospital is
not large, but still a day did not go
by that I didn't learn something
new.
I've learned to help all ages of
people. I've learned to feed,
dress, and make beds for
patients.
I've helped seta broken leg and
aided nurses as they changed
dressings. I was even so lucky as
to have seen a birth of a baby.
This is one advantage I think,
of a small hospital. The staff has
more time to explain and show
more interest in what you are.
Pick officers
for festival
The 12th. Annual Zurich Bean
Festival Meeting was held last
Thursday evening at Zurich
Public School with over 40 people
in attendance.
1977 was another financial
success for the Bean Festival as
well as for all the groups in-
volved. Some of the funds will be
used to update the Festival kit-
chen to meet stricter health
standards.
Contrary to a current rumour
now circulating, the money from
this year's festival did not go to
pay for the new •addition of
dressing rooms at the arena.
The slate of officers for 1978
was elected at the meeting. The
president is Jack Eckel, 1st vice-
president, George Haggitt; 2nd
vice-president, Berdie Fink-
beiner; secretary, Linda Hen-
drick and the treasurer is Betty
Kirk.
I think it is part of any type of
volunteer service, that the
volunteer gains some con-
fidence in herself and also
learns how to respect those who
instruct her, and those who she
must care for,
In the fall I will be attending
Victoria Hospital in London,
where I hopefully will become a
registered nurse.
I know the job situation is not
very good but I am not letting othis
bother me at all,
I believe that as long as a
person is happy with their work,
they should go ahead and do that
work no matter what,
Once again, thank-you very
much for all you have done.
Sincerely yours,
Nancy Hern.
