Times-Advocate, November 17, 1977 Ask review of gas profit
The Liberal eau= Task
Force recently created by Op-
position Leader Stuart Smith to
look into the depressed state of
the tourist industry in Ontario
met in Owen Sound, Wednesday.
This is the first of a series of
hearings in which the Task Force
will be meeting with concerned
citizens groups throughout the
province in order to obtain a
"grass roots" idea of how the
tourist industry cab be better
served at Queen's Park. The
Task Force will consult with
municipalities, chambers of
commerce, tourist
organizations, individual tourist
operators and interested in-
dividuals.
The Task Force is headed by
John Eakins, the Liberal Critic
for Industry & Tourism and
member for Victoria-Haliburton.
Members of the Committee are
Ray Haggerty (Fort Erie), J.
Earl McEwen (Frontenac-
Addington), Sean Conway (Ren-
frew North), Eric Cunningham
(Wentworth North) Mike Bolan
(Nipissing), Vince Kerrio
(Niagara Falls), Jack Riddell
(Huron-Middlesex) and Jim
Bradley (St. Catharines),
The Task Force will be presen-
ting its conclusions to Stuart
Smith and the Liberal Caucus.
Over 80 Club
Mrs, Margaret Clarke,
Crediton, will be 80 years
old, November 17.
Richard Ruston, IVI.P.P..
(Liberal Essex North) has
urged the Chairman of the
Federal Anti-Inflation Board to
review the profit structures of
Union Gas and Consumers Gas.
"Customers of these gas
companies are restricted to
annual wage increases of ap-
proximately 8 percent," said Mr.
Ruston, "yet last year Union Gas
had a 25 percent increase in
profits, and the profit increase
•quormer
for consumers Gas was ap-
proNimateiy 15 percent. Union
Gas made a profit of $24,283,000;
Consumers Gas a profit of
$37,236,000. For the first six
months of 1977 fiscal year, up to
March 31, Consumers already
showed a profit of $33,202,000.
"This situation is particularly
unfair, in view of the fact that
severe weather conditions in the
early part of the year forced
heating bills to increase
tremendously, placing a very
heavy financial burden on con-
sumers, while at the same time
boosting the profits of the sup-
pliers.
"I am well, aware that profits
must be made to ensure effective
operation of these companies and
to provide for research, but for
suppliers to make profits well in
excess of Anti-Inflation
guidelines at the expense of their
customers •

The Middlesex Board of
Education has committees
studying two important features
of current public educational
concern: Values Education and
the Teaching of French as a
second language.
Both committees consist of
representative teachers, • school
trustees, administrative and
resource staff, Home and School
Council members and, in the case
of the French committee,
secondary school students.
The Values Education Com-
mittee is looking at studies
carried out by various educators
over the years and is examining
theories of moral development in
young people. The committee's
work will help the board and its
teachers to better appreciate the
need for, and the place of values
education in elementary and
secondary school courses and •
activities.
The work of the French com-
mittee includes • reviewing
present programs in elementary
and secondary schools,
examining enrolment trends in
French programs, conducting an
opinion survey throughout the
county, and receiving comments
and briefs from individuals and
groups.
This work will help the board
and its teachers to assess com-
munity needs and desires, im-
prove programs where required,
and anticipate future staff and
program requirements.
In addition to dealing with
routine business matters and
some committee of the whole in
camera items concerning
negotiations and personnel,
reported in the complete minutes
of the meeting, the Board:
accepted the Striking Com-
mittee's recommendation that
Messrs. H. McLean and D.
Cobban be the trustee
r epresentatives on the
Elementary Educational
Improvement Leave Committee;
accepted a recommendation
from the Ad Hoc committee to

,Athletic Conference that the
Board (1) inform the directors of
the Conference that it expects all

J ference to exert every effort to
