The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1977-11-17, Page 12MAIN Si, • attrOSIZII JEWELLER INF EXETER Page 12 Times-Advocate, November 17, 1977 This year's bean crop worst in half century A recent newsletter from the Ontario Bean Producers Marketing Beard verifies what most people already knew, "this year's white bean crop was the worst crop disaster in over half a century in Ontario." The communique continues, "Going back through 55 years of records there has never been one year where yields over all our Counties fell below 700 pounds per acre on average." An average of 700 pounds per acre would give a total crop of 1,120,000 hundredweight and the total harvested on October 28 was only 731,000 hundredweight, The estimates of crop potential for 1977 ranged around 2.5 million cwt, The conclusion to the Ontario bean crop situation was, "this year ' will be remembered painfully by growers, processors, shippers and canners. Seed to plant next year's crop is uppermost in 'many growers minds, because the disastrous weather also affects how many seed plots get combined. In order to get some firm idea of the total available seed Ur next year's crop, the board will undertake a survey of all seed growers and elevators to quantify volumes in-house and on the farm. With this information the board hopes to formulate a plan to address the seed problem and advise growers of the best course of action for next year's planting.
