TRACTORS
The Exeter atoms provided the
only bright spot for the local
Minor hockey teams this week,
winning all three of their con-
tests.
The other four all-star squads
lost two games each.
Action at home this week in-
cludes four games on Sunday
with Dorchester providing the
opposition for the atoms, pee
Wees, bantams and midgets.
First game gets underway at 4:00
p.m. and the others follow on the
hour.
The second bantam team will
meet London on Wednesday night
at 8:30.
The Exeter atoms started their
successful week off with a 5-2 win
over Lucan on Saturday and then
nipped Lambeth 3-2 in a thriller
at the rec centre on Sunday.
Tuesday night they travelled to
London and returned home with a
Well-earned 3,0 win over the
London Minor Hockey
Association entry,
Jim Lewis and Rick Gilfillan
shared the netminding duties in
that game to post the team's first
whitewash of the season.
Busiest man on the ice was Jeff
Robinson in the London nets, as
Exeter dominated play
throughout most of the contest
with a well balanced attack,
Brett Batten led the way with a
two-goal performance, his first
coming in the final minute of the
opening period when he finished
off a neat three-way passing play
with linemates Stott Lovie and
George Pratt.
In the opening minute of the
third period, the Exeter power
play went to work arid Batten
took a pass from Pratt in front of
the London net to record his
second marker.
At the 8:20 mark of the final
period, Tim Easterbrook put the
game out of reach when he
finished off a play with Terry
Zachar and Gary MacDonald.
In Sunday's triumph over
Lambeth, Scott Lovie scored in
the first minute of the final period
to break a 2-2 deadlock and the
locals shut the door on their
visitors to preserve the win.
Sean Whiteford and George
Pratt drew assists on the winning
tally.
Lovie also scored Exeter's first
goal of the game as he finished off
a play with Pratt in the first
minute.
Lambeth knotted the count at
the 4:22 mark, but Trevor
Johnston got that one back 15
seconds later when he banged in
a rebound off a shot by Steve
Gould.
Lambeth again tied the game
in the second setting the stage for
Lovie's winning tally.
Goalie Rick Gilfillan and the
defensive corps of Sean
Whiteford, Jeff Pfaff, John Wells
and Bill Fisher played some
stellar hockey to keep the
Lambeth shooters at bay.
In Saturday's contest in Lucan,
the Exeter crew jumped into a 2-0
lead in the first period and never
looked back on their way to the 5-
2 win.
George Pratt paced the scoring
attack with a pair of tallies, while
singles came off the sticks of
Scott Lovie, Trevor Johnston and
Scott Bogart.
Lovie also picked up three
assists, while Jeff Pfaff helped on
a couple and Pratt was credited
with one.
Midgets Beaten
Two short-handed goals helped
power Lambeth to a 5-3 win over
the Exeter midgets at the rec
centre Sunday afternoon, sending
the locals to their second straight
defeat over the weekend.
In a game played at Huron
Park, Saturday, St, Marys shut
them out by a score of 4-0.
Exeter took an early lead in
Sunday's contest when Brian
Mercer finished off a play with
Dan Bell, but Lambeth came
roaring back with three straight
Exeter cut the lead to 3-2 early
in the third when Dave Bell
tipped in a point shot by Steve
Pearce, but Lambeth scored
twice in the final three minutes to
pull the game out of reach,
Dan Bell scored for Exeter with
just over a minute to play when
he blasted a hard shot into the top
corner after being Set up by
Mercer.
In the Saturday night contest,
the- locals faced Some hot
goaltending by their rivals from
St. Marys, and despite several
good chances, they couldn't dent
the twine.
'Lose Pair
The Exeter pee wees lost both
their starts in Shamrock action
this week as they were whipped 6-
1 by St. Marys in a game
Saturday night and then they
came home to be beaten 4.1 by
Lambeth on Sunday afternoon.
St. Marys, whose players stood
head and shoulders over most of
the Exeter youngsters, had
things much their own way in the
game played at Huron Park.
They took a 2-0 lead in the first
period before Steve Batten got
Exeter on the score sheet when
he took a perfect pass from John
Kernick to find an open corner in
the opening minute of'the second
St, Marys got that one back
mid-way through the period and
then added three more unan-
swered goals in the final stanza
as they kept a constant barrage
going against Exeter netminder
Peter Dearing.
In Sunday's game, Lambeth
and Exeter battled to a scoreless
first period before the visitors
jumped into a 2-0 lead in the
second.
Exeter narrowed the gap early
in the final period on a goal by
John Kernick, with Chris
VanGerwen drawing •the assist.
The visitors then rattled home
two more tallies in the final five
minutes to cap the victory.
Banta ms lose twice
Both Exeter bantam teams
suffered two defeats this week.
The "A" squad ended up on the'
short end of a 4-3 verdict to St.
Marys on Saturday and then
suffered a third period lapse to
lose 3-2 to Lambeth at home,
Their "B" team cohorts were
nipped 2-0 by St. Marys at the rec
centre on Wednesday and then
were trimmed 5-0 by Ilderton on
Monday.
Playing at Huron Park on
Saturday, Exeter "A" jumped
into an early 1-0 lead on a goal by
Bill Glover with Dave Jackson
drawing the assist.
However, St. Marys then
rattled in three straight tallies
before Dave Bell cut the lead to 3-
2 at the end of the second. Ed
Willis drew the assist,
St. Marys scored again early in
the third and Bell came back with
his second to narrow the gap, but
Exeter couldn't get the equalizer.
Playing at home, Sunday, the
team appeared to have their
contest with Lambeth well in
band as they had a 2-0 lead at the
end of the second period.
However, the visitors blinked
the light three times in the final
stanza to post the win.
Dave Bell scored both Exeter
markers, one an unassisted effort
and the other being set up by
Wayne Smith.
Jets evened the score at 9:38 as
he fired a shot off the backboards
and fired his own rebound past
Don Boyd in the London nets.
Lucan native Randy English
put the Kings ahead 2-1 with only
10 seconds left in the initial
frame.
The final regulation scoring
came at 3:30 of the second period
