Hawks score double victories
The defending OliA Junior
"D" champion 4x4er Hawks
ran their season record to three
wins and a loss when they scored
a pair of victories on home ice
this week.
On Friday night, the Hawks
were never headed as they out-
scored their namesakeS from
Mitchell by a convincing 7-4
margin, and then they came
from behind Sunday to nip
Seaforth 5-4 in a close contest
that provided plenty of excite-
ment for the fans.
The Hawks take to the road
this week with a game in
Thamesford on Friday and then
back-to-back outings against
Mitchell and BothwellonTuesday
and Wednesday,
The locals went in flurries in
Friday night's contest with the
Mitchell crew, being helped on a
couple of occasions by some
shaky netminding by Bob Ward
in the visitor's net.
Brian Taylor started the Ex-
Minor teams break
Pinder broke in after being set
up by Fisher while they were
killing a penalty. Pinder drew
the goaltender to one side and
then slid a perfect pass to
Mommersteeg who had an open
corner and made no mistake.
Seaforth finished off the scor-
ing two minutes later on their
fourth successful power play of
the night, but Steve Beer shut the
door on them for the final
minutes to post his second win in
as many starts in the nets.
The visitors out-shot the
Hawks by a 42-31 count.

• The Exeter minor hockey
houseleague program begins this
Saturday morning with four
teams in action,
Although the boys on the teams
range in age from eight through
to 15, the lines will be set so that
all participants will be on the ice
against boys of their own calibre
to the greatest extent possible,
Atoms will be playing against
atoms, pee wees against pee wees
and bantams against bantams,
The names of the various
teams are printed below, and any
boys who have registered and
have been missed from the team
selection are asked to call Bill
Batten to get their names in-
cluded.
Officials have also noted that
because the lines have to be
balanced, it is important that any
boy not able to play for any
particular reason should also call

Rally in third
The Hawks had to rally with
three third period goals to sub-
due a stubborn Seaforth crew by
the narrow 5-4 margin in Sun-
day's action,
Exeter pressed from the open-
ing whistle and were rewarded
with a tally at the 7:13 mark off
the stick of Brian Taylor as he
tipped in a point shot by Randy
Fisher, Jamie Caldwell drew the
other assist on the power play.
Seaforth got that one back with
their own power play four
minutes later and the teams
skated off with a 1-1 draw in the
first period.
The visitors then took control
of the game in the first half of
the middle stanza on two more
power play tallies, while Dave
Kinsman cut the lead to 3-2 at the
11:00 mark on a play with
Ferguson and Pinder.
The Hawks evened the count at
the 2:20 mark of the final period
on a goal by Pinder and went
ahead three minutes later when
Penhale finished off a three way
play with Fisher and
Mommersteeg while they were
enjoying a power play,
Mommersteeg and Penhale drew
assists on the Pinder tally.
Fred Mommersteeg scored
what turned out to be the winner
at the 12:33 mark when he and
and Steve Batten put them on the
score sheet near the end of the
first period when he rifled in a
shot from the slot. Dave Hayter
and John Kernick drew the
assists.
Near the mid-way mark of the
second, John Kernick scored on
an unassisted effort to cut the
lead to 3.2, but London picked up
the clincher in the final few
seconds of the same pe*riod to
post the win.
Two shut-out
Exeter bantam II and atoms
teams were shut-out in their first
league appearance. •
Lucan drubbed the bantam
crew 6-9 in a Saturday afternoon
game in Lucan, while Strathroy
posted a 4-9 win over the atoms
in Sunday's triple header at the
rec centre.
Although out-scored by a wide
margin, the second bantam team
put up a creditable showing and
weren't out-played as much as
the score indicated. They just
failed to click on several good
chances, while the Exeter net-
minders didn't get any breaks.
Strathroy dominated the atom
game, it being their fourth con-
test of the young season, while it
was the first , encounter for the
locals who showed signs of hav-
ing the ability to be a contender
as the season progresses.
Midgets
A goal late in the third period
allowed the Exeter midgets to
score a win over Belmont by a
score of 2-1 in their first start of
the season,
Dan Bell fired the winning goal
for the Exeter crew on a pass
from Brian Mercer with one
minute and 46 seconds remaining
in the game.
Dave Bogart shot Exeter into a
1-0 lead at 1.58 of the second
period on a three-way combina-
tion with Doug Brooks and Brian
Mercer,
Exeter enjoyed an edge in
territorial play by outshooting
Belmont 31 to 16.

teams opened the season in the
Shamrock league this weekend
and came up with an even split
with three wins, three losses and'
one tie.

over Belmont and London, while
the midgets also won in their
only contest in Belmont.
Exeter's pee wee entry tied
Belmont and then dropped a ver-
dict to London, while the bantam
II and atom teams suffered
losses in their only outings.

wees, bantams and midgets face

The Exeter bantams spotted
Belmont a one-goal lead, Friday,
and then came roaring back to
post a 4-2 verdict on Belmont ice.
Wayne Smith triggered the
first Exeter goal on a pass from
Bill Glover to even the count and
then Dave Jackson dented the
twine on a pass from Glover to
give Exeter a 2-1 margin.
In the second period, Rick
Lindenfield blasted a shot into
the Belmont net, only to have the
home team come back with
another tally to keep the margin
to one goal.
However, in the final minute of
the middle frame, Jackson pop-
ped his second tally on a play
with Lindenfield and Rick
Fletcher shut out the home team
in the final stanza to preserve the
win,
On home ice, Sunday, the
locals had an easy time with Lon-
don, controlling play throughout.
Dave Jackson was again the
scoring leader as he contributed
a hat-trick in, the 5-0 victory. The
other goals came off the sticks of
Pete Turkey and Rick Linden-
field.

were Lindenfield, Kevin Par-
