Lutheran ladies
hold Zurich rally
"One in Witness-Won in.
Witness" was the theme of the
fifteenth annual meeting of the
Western District Assembly of
Lutheran Church Women of the
Eastern Canada Synod.
Two hundred and twenty-eight
ladies from some thirty con-
gregations from an area encom-
passing Owen Sound, St. Agatha,
Tavistock, and Port Elgin
registered for the all day session
at St. Peter's Church in Zurich
last Tuesday.
Mrs, Jack Turkheifn, Presi-
dent of the local LCW in Zurich
gave warm words of welcome to
the visitors and referred to the
alphabetical order which gave
Zurich a special privilege in be-
ing host to the Assembly which
met last year in Brodhagen.
William Miskie of Chesley
presided over the session with
Mrs. Barry Boeckner of
Elmwood serving as Secretary-
Treasurer. Special guests were
Mrs. Eric Luther of Hensall, The
Rev, Henry Van Essen of Bethel
Reformed Church of Exeter and
Mrs. Richard Tubbe of Pem-
broke.
The Rev. Martin Stockman,
pastor of Trinity Lutheran
Church in Ayton and Dean of the
Western District of Eastern
Canada Synod expressed the ap-
preciation of the Synod for the
faithful work carried on by the
Lutheran Church Women's
organization.
Rev. Mr. Van Essen gave the
key-noth address on the theme of
Christian witness when he spoke
in a challenging way about the
process known by the title
"Church Growth." He spoke of
things that promote growth of a
congregation such as
evangelism, discipline and nur-
turing. He said that new
members, especially people new-
ly initiated to Christian faith
need to be nurtured. The Church
must be a loving and supportive
"Mother" to its new members.
Each individual in the congrega-
tion is responsible for showing
this support socially, financially
and spiritually.
Mrs. Richard Tubbe, President
of the Eastern Canada Synodical
Unit of LCW reported on the
many aspects of the auxiliary's
work such as compassion and
social concerns, Bible study, out-
reach and awareness of world
mission and home mission con-
cerns.
Mrs. Miskie was elected to
continue as Chairperson of the
Assembly and was installed in
that office by Mrs. Tubbe.
The 1978 meeting of the
District Assembly is due to be
held in Chesley.
Robert S. Pile, vice-president
of Hough's Bakery, Cleveland,
and president of the firm's
catering division was guest
speaker at Women Together
Thursday morning. The event,
held in the new recreational
centre, was attended by over 100
women. "Holiday Entertaining"
was his theme and he stressed
entertaining should be a joy and
an act of love, Quoting from
Proverbs he said, "Better is a
dinner of herbs where love is,
than roast beef where hatred is."
The speaker said everyone (all
ages) should entertain more than
they do. "Even if your
rheumatism is acting up it will do
you good to ask a friend in and
prepare some simple food for
them." He stressed the point:
"entertaining should be simple
and it should be fun. It's not the
fancy food that •makes for a
happy time, it's the good com-
pany, hostesses would be wise to
plan their meals so they can be
made ahead of time to free them
to spend as much time as possible
with their guests rather than
fussing in the kitchen."
Mr. Pile, who has the
reputation of being one of the best
caterers in the United States told
of some of his experiences, in the
catering business including
preparing the city of Cleveland's
banquet for Prince Charles'
recent visit to that place. He said
the Prince was charming and
"ate everything on his plate."
The author of a book "Menu
Planning for Every "Occasion",
Mr. Pile said he is not a cook but
a planner of menus. He delighted
his women's 'audience by saying
all his cooks are ladies. "Men,"
he declared, "are much too
tempera mental !"
His company caters for every
occasion, for as small a group as
six up to three or four thousand
people, During the holiday season
they may make up as many as
80,000 canapes in one day.
A committed Christian, Mr.
Pile, worked in his Christian
philosophy along with his talk on
the preparation of food and en.
tertaining,
He gave out several recipes,
one being for Reuben Pie which
he said "is terrific...a great dish
for New Year's Day."

Old electric it
Mrs. Cindy dim Hoof, London, Ontar
Mrs. Van Hoof can't say enough about her gas dryer.
Since she replaced her electric with a natural gas dryer a year and
a half ago, she hasn't had a single problem. And because she
has a husband, and three children between two months and four years
old, she does at least two loads of laundry a day.
Her laundry is always very fluffy, because, since gas heats up and
cools off very quickly, there's less chance of ovcrdrying. And
she's also found her gas dryer actually dries faster,
See'a large range of r4ural gas dryers made by Inglis, Simplicity
and Maytag at a nearby Union Gas
Appliance Centre or your local appliance
dealer, There's a big selection of features,
timing controls, cycles and colours to
choose from.
We think you'll find, like Cindy, that
a natural gas dryer is the natural choice
for your home.
