Albert Scott in South Huron
Hospital, Exeter, on Sunday,
October 9, 1977, beloved husband
of Lottie (Squire), in his 87th
year. Dear father of Clifford
Scott of Kirkton and Mrs. William
Rundle (Verna) of Woodham;
(one daughter, Audrey Russell,
predeceased in 1967). Also sur-
vived by 10 grandchildren and
nine great grandchildren. The
funeral was held Wednesday
from the Hopper-Hockey Funeral
Home, Exeter with Rev. Glen
Wright officiating. Interment in
Exeter Cemetery.
SARAH THOMAS
In Strathmere Lodge, on
Monday, October 10, 1977, Sarah
Ward Thomas, beloved wife of
the late Ernest Thomas; dear
mother of Carl and Leroy Mer-
thew both of Detroit, Michigan in
her 80th year. The funeral was
held Wednesday from the C.
Haskett and Son Funeral Home,
Lucan. Interment in St. James
Cemetery, Clandeboye,

Council supported a resolution
from Charlottenburgh Township
in Glengarry County, calling for
a national referendum on capital
punishment. It was felt that
parliamentarians had been
voting in accordance with con-
science rather than constituents'
wishes.

assessment of unoccupied new
housing units went unsupported.
Hensall has agreements with
developers, requiring them to
install services while the town
provides maintenance, so does
not have a problem with un-
collected building taxes.
The contractor responsible will
be given a list of deficiences to
correct in the local sewage
system. The list was compiled
when the recent final inspection
was made.
Council heard that the Bendix
Recreation Vehicle plant wanted
an additional sewer outlet on
Richmond Street. It decided to
wait for a request in writing and
more information.
Commenting on the province's
cuts in municipal grants, Reeve
Knight said Hensall would likely
be "pretty well off." Trouble
could arise if education costs
exceeded budget limits, he ad-
ded,
Copies of Exeter's by-law
relating to privately owned
outdoor swimming pools will be
sent to councillors. Council will
discuss this at a later meeting,
In other business, accounts
amounting to about $9,000 for
September were approved for
payment, as well as tax write-offs
of $264.
RITA HEENAN
A funeral was held Tuesday,
October 4, from St. Patrick's
Church, Biddulph, for Rita
Margarette Hennan of RR 3,
Granton. She died in St. Marys
Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
She was the wife of James
Heenan, who survives her, along
with three children • Frank,
Joseph and Anne, all at home.
Also surviving are a sister, Mary
Baker and two brothers Jack and
Clement Baker, all of Dor-
chester; a sister, (Teresa) Sister
Mary Francis of Precious Blood,
Hamilton, and another sister,
Mrs. Leon Bedard of Zurich. She
was predeceased by a brother,
Frank.

Hensall should either have its
own geared-to-income housing
for senior citizens or have access
to that existing in the county,
Reeve Harold Knight said at
Tuesday night's council meeting,
"Hensall should have a right
somewhere", he said. The
written agreement with Exeter
had proved of little help in a
pinch, since units there were
filled.
He had talked with the Huron
County Housing Authority about
accommodation for an elderly
Hensall couple and had suggested
the new Seniors' apartments in
Zurich. He had been told that
permission had to be obtained
from Zurich to rent to people
Work has started on making ice
at the South Huron Rec Centre,
and if all goes well, there should
be no difficulty in meeting the
deadline for the start of hockey
next weekend.
The Exeter Hawks, defending
OHA Junior "D" champions, are
scheduled to have their home
opener on Friday,October 21 and
the St. Marys Lincolns of the
Junior "B" circuit are scheduled
the following night.
Normally, when ice is first put
into a new arena by contractors,
it is removed immediately and
the regular staff then put on a
new sheet.
However, Brhee Shaw,
chairman of the board of
management, said that the sheet
of ice prepared by workmen from
More police protection is going
to be requested by Hay Township
Council for Poplar Beach, south
of St. Joseph. Residents of the
community had written council
asking for more patrols because
of the vandalism last winter.
Council considered a document
from the municipal affairs critic
for the New Democratic Party,
urging that municipal elections
be held in October, rather than
November, Hay Council decided
they would prefer to have them in
Decernber.
Residents of the Bayview
Several highway signs were
knocked down over the weekend
in the area according to the
Exeter OPP.
Two of the signs were in
Stephen and three in Usborne,
including two large signs in
Elimville and Winchelsea. A mail
box owned by Larry Taylor was
also knocked over in Winchelsea.

suit stolen off a clothes line at
Huron Park. The latter was
owned by Suzanne Wilson and

A flag was taken by two people
who Were spotted on the roof of

Plans for Hensall's new fire
hall are still in progress. A
council delegation inspected fire
halls in Lucan and Arva recently
and gathered information about
costs. A meeting was scheduled
for Wednesday night to hear this

Amish farmers are expected to
arrive in the next week or two to
tear down the frame of Hensall's
old arena. ( A new one is under
construction next door,) An
Canada Ice will remain in the rec
centre for the coming season.
He explained that there is a
one-year guarantee on the
equipthent and installation and
there would be ample time after
the hockey season to correct any
problems that may be evident.
Canada Ice officials arrived in
Exeter on Tuesday to turn on the
equipment and to start lowering
the temperature of the floor in
preparation for making ice.
Mayor Shaw said the board of
management and the building
committee met with the con-
tractors last week to get some
matters ironed ; out. Shaw said
there are several deficiencies
that have to be corrected by the
contractors, including about
three or four leaks in the roof and
subdivision, south of St. Joseph,
will probably have street lights
sometime this fall. Hay Township
intends to sign an agreement
soon with Ontario Hydro.
The township council agreed to
support a resolution from McNab
Township, Renfrew County,
calling for progressive
assessments of new houses on
one-third their value the first
year, two-thirds the second year,
and full value the third year.
The township's new grader will
probably be delivered in the next
week or two.

Black Creek-Mousseau drainage
works, which was halted because
of an objection by the Ministry of
Natural Resources, The Creek

area. Beaver have built dams on

The contractors will not
receive any further progress
payments on the building until
the deficiencies are corrected.

November 20, at St. Patrick's
School, Dublin, It is an
evolvement from the Focus on
Faith programs, designed by the
Ontario Separate School
Trustees' Association to enable
trustees, parents,teachers priests
and administrative personnel to
share the faith dimension of their
respective roles and thus provide
the best possible catholic
education for the children in
separate schools.
Participants in the day will be
representative of each school
community -- parents, priest,
principals, teachers and spouses
with administrative staff and
trustees and their spouses.
Bishop Sherlock of London will be
attending.
A professional activity day will
be held at St. Patrick's School,
Dublin October 17 with theme
"What Makes Our Schools
Catholic" with Bishop Sherlock
taking part.

Municipal storm sewer at its west
end along highway 84, following

Works superintendent Gary
Maxwell reported trouble at the
municipal dump. Chains and
posts at the entrance had been
knocked over and locks taken
away. Council empowered him to
inform those using the dump that,
unless they locked the gate before
and after themselves and con-
formed to regulations in general,
they would be charged for sen-
ding a man out to supervise their
dumping.
Advertisements will be placed
in the Zurich and Exeter
newspapers concerning the new
home support program for the
elderly offered through the
county's social services depart-
ment, It provides free labour to
eligible people for certain
repairs, transportation, gar-
deningvsnow removal and so on.
London's Humane Society will
be asked to send a representative
to council's next meeting, outling
services and costs. In Hensall,

for teacher
As part of their municipal
recreation program, Stephen
township council has agreed to
pay the wages of the figure
skating instructor for the Huron
Park figure skating club this
year.
The new instructor is Mrs.
Pamela Meriam of London and
she will be providing about four
hours of instruction per week.
Council decided to hire a
student to deliver dog tags and
account for the number of dogs at
Huron Park.
Approval was given for minor
renovations to the Huron Park
fire hall. The changes will allow
all equipment to be housed in the
present building located across
the road from the Ontario
Development Corporation of
Cost is estimated to be
about $500.
Four tile drain applications for
a total of $33,700 were approved.
Clerk Wilmar Wein said very few
Stephen farmers had taken ad-
vantage of the opportunity to
install drains by borrowing
money from conventional
sources and then receive a
provincial loan when the monies
became available.
Wein said loan money was now
available and a new allotment
was expected by April 1, 1978.

homes, would not be permitted.)
Three meetings will be held
between Hensall's council and
Mr, Duz to discuss the draft of the
secondary plan for the village.
Public meetings will be called in
January, 1978.
The first of the series will take
place November 30, the second
and third probably December 7
and 14. Copies of the draft plan
meanwhile will be mailed to
members of council.
