fall rummage sale
The Hensall Kinettes met
September 14 at the home of
president Sharon Doxtator, with
all members present.
The meeting began with Sharon
Fink leading members in the
Kinette Song.
The Kinettes' newest mem-
bers, Donna St. John, Brenda
Soldan and Sharon Fink, were
presented with corsages by the
president, and the vice-president,
Pat Brown. They were welcomed
into the club.
The annual fall rummage sale,
sponsored by the Kinettes in
October, will be set aside this
year due to the Hensall arena
being under construction. The
Kinettes look forward to
resuming this project in the
spring.
Following the business portion
of the meeting, Lynda Soldan was
given a surprise birthday cake
with all the trimmings. The
Kinettes plan to meet for dinner
at Grannie's Country Kitchen,
Vanastra, October 12. There will
be a meeting at the home of
Sherrie Bonthron afterward.

Dr. Goddard thanked them. As
he went out the door with his
wife, they were singing "For
he's a jolly good fellow."
drove me to Clinton when my son
was born", said the other. "He'd
stitch a kid'5 lip at midnight for
him", said the first.
Another voice said, "That's
the first lady he's kissed today!"
The lady, who had snow white
hair, was a neighbour, Mrs. Fred
Bonthron. "He's been awfully
good to me", she said. "He even
helps in the garden sometimes."
Mr. and Mrs. Norman
Westlake of RR 2, Staffa, had
come early and were watching
from the sidelines. "He was the
only one who'd come out at
night", said Norman.
A group, began playing on the,
platform at the end of the room.
The Miller girls sang.
After a while there were
presentations. A large bouquet of
roses for Helen Goddard; for
John, a sculpture from the South
Huron Hospital Board, an en-
velope containing a gift of money
from former patients, and an
engraved gold watch from the
village of Hensall, "We un-
derstand everyone gets a gold
watch when they retire", said
Reeve Harold Knight.
Rally Day
is marked

Hensall United Church on Sun-
day, with Rev. Don Beck in the
pulpit. Sandra McCurdy and
Tyler Goudie assisted by reading
the lessons from the Bible. The
Junior Choir sang, "Everything
is Beautiful", "Its a small
World" and "Let my little light
shine", directed by Norma Pryde
and Mrs. Mary Lou Hyde.
In place of the sermon, Rev.
Beck told three stories at various
places during the service - "The
Falls of Freddie", "The Wobble,
Wobble, Flops" and "Just-a-

Church. ladies
enjoy dinner
With Mrs. John Corbett in the
chair, Unit 2 of Hensall U.C.W.
met September 12 following a pot
luck supper in the fellowship hall
at the church, She opened the
meeting with a reading, "The
23rd Psalm for busy people" and
closed with another reading,
"Where do we fit in the church?"
The devotion period was lead
by Mrs. Dave Brock and was
based on the feeding of the
multitudes - giving away leads to
sharing and love.
The study was on the book,
"Justice not Charity". Mrs.
Edison Forrest described life in
the first world (the Western
World) as one of affluence,
overeating and over-drinking,
waste, and smug, selfish in-
difference to conditions in the
second (Communist) world, the
third world (comprising the
middle east and Latin American
countries) and the fourth and
poorest world, made up of
countries like Bangladesh and
India.
All must learn to know and
respect neighbours in the global
village. As conditions of living
improve, the need for numerous
offspring fades: contraception
becomes a way of life,
eliminating the population ex-
plosion. .
Business was conducted by
Mrs. Carl Payne. The general
meeting will be on October 3,
when Elaine Townshend will be
the speaker. The regional
"enrichment" meeting will be
held in Centralia United Church
on October 18. The Brant Belle
"A" Dears Ladies choir and
Brant Men of Song concert will be
held on Sunday, November 6.
(Tickets are available from
U.C.W. members.)
The U.C.W. will hold a bake
sale at the auction on the arena
premises October 1, A committee
was formed to arrange details.
The next meeting will be October
17, as the regular one is
Thanksgiving Day.
Personals
Mr. & Mrs. Don Flear, Grand
Bend were recent visitors with
the latter's mother Mrs. George
Armstrong,
At 1 p.m. Sunday people began
arriving at the Pineridge Chalet,
just west of Hensall. Three hours
later they were still coming.
There were over 500.
They lined up in the drizzling
rain so that, as they entered,
they could shake hands with John
Goddard and his wife, Helen. It
was not just politeness. Their
faces shone as they came up to
him. Some squeezed his hand and
smiled. Others attempted little
speeches or made jokes. The
ways of saying thank you when a
doctor retires after 30 years in a
community are countless.
These were former patients
from all over Huron Countykall
ages, sizes and shapes. The
tallest mail iii),the room had been
in his office as a knee-high four-
year-old. There were babies Dr.
Goddard had delivered a few
months before, anti adults he had
delivered a quarter-century ago;
men whose faces wer.e
weathered and lined by outdoor
work; frail, stooped elderly peo-
ple; beaming women; and boys
and girls in their Sunday best.
The doctor had been difficult to
interview. He would discuss
music, travel, photography,
anything but himself and his
career. The reporter asked some
of those in the crowd about him.
Two women from the Kippen
area, who didn't want their
names in the paper, had been
patients for 30 years. "He's es-
pecially good with children and
older people", said one. "He
