W. EXETER, PH. 234-0694 A new and unique idea in the field of community music begins this week with the formation of the Huronia Children's Choir, under the direction and leadership of Mrs. Marianne McCaffrey and Dr. Ralph Topp. This ecumenical choir will bring together children from the town of Exeter and surrounding area in lively presentations of primarily sacred music in a variety of forms, "We have discovered that younger children, in particular, love the acting and musical vitality of folk musicals, which they are capable of doing with great vigor", said Mrs. McCaffrey. "Older children enjoy the challenge of more difficult music and we hope to• provide that challenge". Dr. Topp pointed out that, in order for senior choirs in churches and the community to survive, choral training should begin at the junior choir level, "It is our intent to provide this training and create an interest in music at an early age", he said. In the past year, the choir, under the sponsorship of Exeter United Church, has presented a variety of services at churches throughout the community. Those , have heard these children are well aware of the quality and variety of musical ability they present. Their first attempt at competition work "The Huronia Male Chorus and the Huronia Singers combine many religions in a single voice of praise", Mrs. McCaffrey said, "and the children will have the same freedom here as adults. We have in the past participated in a great many church services in many musical settings and it is our intention to continue in this vein." Dr. Topp and Mrs. McCaffrey have applied to Wintario and to the town of Exeter for money to support the choir but as yet have not heard any report from either source. The choir will practice in the high school on Thursday evenings from 7:00. to 8:15 p.m. The criteria for acceptance is based not on age, but on the ability to read easily, Mrs. McCaffrey points out that a child who cannot read becomes very frustrated and soon loses interest in trying to cope with the music. "I would rather tell a parent that we want his child to wait a year and have that child come back to us eager and excited, than to see a child quit because of frustration and ultimately quit singing." resulted in winning the Bradshaw Trophy at the Kiwanis Festival in Stratford. After much discussion and serious thought, Mrs. McCaffrey and Dr, Topp came to the decision that religion should not be a barrier to the presentation of sacred music. Visitors to the Exeter Fall Fair Friday and Saturday will again have the opportunity to win valuable prizes in the annual draw. The first prize this year is a hind quarter of beef donated by the Exeter District Co-Op. Holder of the second ticket drawn will take home a side of pork through the courtesy of Earl Lippert Trucking.
