The two area teams were tied at the end of the regular season and the championShip was awarded to Exeter on a better goals record. The same thing happened in Saturday's three game round-robin playoff. The two clubs were again tied, but, this time Lucan was declared the championship team because of their goals for and against record. Officials of the minor league which included teams this year from Exeter, Lucan, St. Marys and Thamesford are to be congratulated on giving a large number of boys a chance to play soccer. This game appears to be growing by leaps and bounds throughout the country. Saturday's playoffs which were held at the Lucan sports field and Biddulph Central School concluded a very successful season. More than 150 youngsters were involved in the games. More slo pitch Another sport which is gaining in popularity is slo-pitch softball. Several leagues were organized this year including Dashwood and Kirkton. A slo-pitch tournament is scheduled for this weekend at the Kirkton-Woodham Community Centre with 12 teams lin- ed up for action Saturday and Sunday. It is expected six teams will be participating from Stratford along with three from London and one each from St. Marys, Mitchell and Kirkton. The Kirkton team finished second in a similar tourney held at Stratford during the past weekend. They lost the final game 11-9 to New Hamburg. Members of the Kirkton team are Bob McDonald, Jack and Wayne Mayer, Jim and Ed Kerslake, George Tryon, Gary Simpson, Rick Bradford, Paul MacNaughton, Wayne Hobbs, Bill Spearin and Keith Stephens. Football schedule starts The regular schedule of the Huron-Perth high school conference starts to-day Thursday at the South Huron athletic field. Junior and senior teams from Central Huron in Clinton will be supplying opposition for the two South Huron clubs. The local Panthers saw their first exhibition action in sort of a subdued way Friday as they met Petrolia high school clubs in controlled scrimmages. During these pre-season scrimmages, coal es of both clubs are allowed on the field during the actual play to give instruction. Also, the referees were very helpful in pointing out mistakes and generally assisting in explaining their calls. We 'Caught a few minutes of Friday's scrimmage by both South Huron teams and they both appear ready to provide an exciting brand of ball for their school and fans. Senior coach Ron Bogart has the toughest chore with only five or six holdovers from last year's club. The.juniors with coach Doug Ellison back at the coaching reins look capable of being in contention for the championship. Quarterback Doug Brooks looked very impressive as were the efforts of fellows like Larry Dawson and Doug Hoffman. Craig DeGraw tipping the scales at close to 260 pounds gives the juniors more than normal size for a junior player. Today's games should give local fans a good insight into the calibre of teams They will be cheering for this fall. Tigertown will be jumping Baseball fans throughout this area are in for the biggest weekend of the summer if they take the time to pay a visit or two to Dashwood. Two local teams will be fighting to keep their Ontario Baseball Association championship hopes alive Saturday and Sunday. The Dashwood Tigers under the direction of manager Joe Fulop are one game down to Whitby in the 013A Senior "D" semi-finals and need two victories to keep on rolling towards a privincial title. The Tigers dropped a 7-3 dicision in Whitby in the first game. The second game of the series will be played in Dashwood Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. with a third game if necessary slated for Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Stephen junveniles find themselves in a similar situation having lost the first contest of a best-of-three series over the weekend in Almonte, near Ottawa. The juveniles will be on the Dashwood diamond at 1 p,m. Saturday afternoon for the second game and if successful will be right back at 4 p.m. to play the third and deciding contest. So, for an interesting weekend of baseball take the drive to Dashwood. We hope the weatherman will provide his co-operation. Training sessions for most National Hockey league clubs only started early this week but most are wasting lit- tle time in getting into exhibition game action. The first game will be played tonight, Thursday in Kitchener with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings tangling. A little closer to home, the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins will meet at the london Gardens this Saturday night. Two other games within easy driving distance of here are in Port Huron, Michigan. St. Louis and Cleveland meet in the border city, Wednesday, September 28 and Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings will be there Saturday, October 1. While mentioning the Red Wings they appear to be us- ing a different theme of recent years in trying to get full houses back at Olympia Stadium. Some of their ads are showing a battered Ted Lindsay saying the Red Wings will be back with an aggressive team. The district minor soccer league season came to a close Saturday as all four teams participated in three games in round robin playoffs. Lucan took all four playoff trophies. The closest to breaking the Lucan supremacy came in the atom division where Exeter and Lucan actually ended in a tie with two victories apiece but the Irish youngsters were declared • At a meeting this week, the Exeter Minor Hockey Association announced there would be considerable emphasis on houseleagues this coming season. This will give any boy an op- portunity to play hockey at the level of his ability, regardless of what level that may be. The EMHA approved a syStem whereby the games will be operated on strict three-minute turns per line, and all players will have the same length of time on the ice. Members expressed the hope this would encourage mor,e boys to participate in minor hockey for the coming season. In addition to the houseleague games for beginners, there will be skating instructioh periods and sessions for skill training. Most of the houseleague action will take place on Saturday mornings and the schedule will include about 25 games, It was decided at the Sunday meeting not to enter - a novice team in Shamrock play this season. Teams will be entered in all other divisions, although ,a juvenile entry is still a bit of a question mark. Due to the number of boys registered in the bantam division, a second team will be entered in Shamrock. It is ex- pected a "B" league will operate this season so the boys will be playing against comparable teams in Shamrock. One final registration will be held in October for boys who are not yet signed up and it is hoped that an equipment exchange can b.e operated at the same time. Members of the Exeter figure skating club this year will be get- ting additional instruction. Club president Gaylan Josephson announced this week that Brad Loosley would be back for his eighth year as club professional and he would be joined by, a second pro, Marg Carey. Josephson said acquiring of a second instructor would allow for better utilization of ice time.
