The most enthusiasm of these contacted by the T-A came from Mrs. Mel Douglas who operates the Bonnie Doone Tourist Home along with her husband. Her first reaction to the success of the summer was, "It was a super summer. The best we have ever had. The wet weather in late August slowed things a bit and, possibly prevented our customers from staying a week longer." Mrs. Douglas feels the family atmosphere has returned to Grand Bend. She added, "Families are returning to our village for their vacation and the situation now is quite com- parable to when we started our business about 20 years ago. She attributed the continued change for the better in con- ditions at Grand Bend to the summer complement of the On- tario Provincial Police saying, "They have made all the difference in the world," Dennis Mathers, operator of the Cheryl Ann food establish- ment on Main Street agreed that more families were coming back to enjoy their vacations at the Bend. Mathers said his business was tickets are on a first come first served basis, Seating at the Playhouse is limited to 500 persons. Tickets will be available at the Playhouse 9-5 (Monday through. Friday) and also at the Bank of Montreal, Grand 13end, Mail orders accepted when ac- companied by a stamped, self- addressed envelope. Cheques should be made payable to Huron Country Playhouse. The weather helped "slack things off" during the last two weeks of August," Grand Bend's deputy-reeve Bob Simpson who operates the Wonder Grove tourist home, just north of the roller rink said, "June and July were terrific. We were probably operating at only 60 percent of capacity the last two weeks but that was because of the weather." Reeve Bob Sharen, a Grand Bend realtor and insurance agent felt business in general throughout the village was good. He also emphasized the return to the family tourist and com- plimented the OPP detachment on doing a good job. Bluewater Hardware owner Paul Couse agreed with the others in all respects. He com- mented, "This is our ninth year in business here and saleswise it was the best ever." On the question of the type of tourists, Couse said, "There's no question that families are retur- ning and that certainly helps our business." He suggested more year-round residents in the village are help- ing the entire economy of the community. He added, "No one builds a cottage anymore. They winterize their houses and are up here almost every weekend." The:draw for the quilt made by Senior Citizen ladies was drawn and won by Mary Yeo, Sarnia. After guessing games and various other games, lunch was served by the Inn staff.
