That was one of the questions posed to Exeter council this week in a letter from Dr. M, Gans in which he complained about his increased property taxes. The local physician explained that he usually had his wife do most of the important business and he hadn't seen his tax notices for a couple of years and was "amazed" at the figures on this year's tax bill for "the doubtful pleasure of living here". He questioned whether he was being charged such a high amount because he was a doctor and presumed to have a large income. Dr. Gans continued by warning council they were "playing with fire" in view of the high tax rate, noting that physicians can make more money in other place. "I move we file it," Reeve Si Simmons said after the letter was read. However, other members felt there should be a. letter sent explaining the rules of assessing. Cleric Eric Carscadden said doctors pay about the third highest business assessment under terms of the Ontario Assessment Act, The rate is around 50 percent, compared to the 311 to 35 percent paid by retail businesses. Councillor Ken Ottewell suggested it should be explained that Exeter council does not set the percentages. Derry Boyle said the letter was a reasonable request from a taxpayer and should be an- swered. It was decided to haste the clerk forward sections of the Assessment Act to Dr, Gans, %Wm L'Orr kn c...
