Monday night at Mohawk, Dennis Morrissey just failed to chalk up a fourth victory as he was photoed out in 2.03 2/5 with Derby Ron, also owned by the same Morrissey-Hamather combination. Dennis Morrissey upped ms winning streak by taking the first race at Mohawk Tuesday night with Gamble Joe in slightly more than two minutes and six seconds. Their baseball schedule begins in February and the team plays about 100 games. Paul is a product of the Exeter and Crediton minor baseball program. The first luncheon of this kind was held last year and was a tremendous success. The main course on the menu consists of hot dogs. Officials of the Irish are looking forward to the new season with excitement. The new coach will be Bill Banner- man and we know Bill will do an excellent job in getting the best out of his team. The club will be basically the same as last year with only three players failing to meet the age requirements. The Irish will be holding their first practice tonight, Thursday at the Huron Park arena at 8 p.m. The next prac- tices will be held September 13, 20 and 27 with starts set for 9 p.m. The newly renovated Lucan arena is expected to be ready for use by the third week in October. Clare Stanley tells us one section of seats has already been poured. - Difficult to concentrate We made a visit to the Canadian' National Exhibition in Toronto Sunday and also took in a Blue Jay's game but it was more than difficult to enjoy the game and this was not only because of the very inept performance turned in by the Toronto club. The regular CNE air show was on for the entire dura- tion of the ball game and anyone can be excused for failing to concentrate on baseball with the constant roar and noise from the planes. It would appear that the only ones able to keep their mind on baseball were the Seattle Mariners as they had lit- tle trouble in disposing of the Blue Jays by a score of 7 - 2. There were only two Blue Jays that looked as if they were trying to impress the management and the onlookers. Pitcher Gerry Garvin who has continually kept all American league base runners close to first base with his deceptive pickoff throws was at his best Sunday. Garvin picked Seattle catcher Rick Jutze off first base before he knew what happened and in another instance threw to first and the opposition runner going the wrong way was forced to go to second and was thrown out. It was interesting to note that all Seattle runners even when Garvin went to the plate were edging back to first base. The other Blue Jay looking impressive was veteran Ron Fairly who hit the ball solidly and made a couple of good catches in right field. While at the CNE grounds Sunday we paid a'visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The NHL player of the day signing autographs was Steve Shutt of the Montreal Canadians. We got his autograph and were able to ask a quick opi- nion of the Huron Hockey School at Huron Park. Shutt was at the local school several years ago and said it was an excellent camp especially in skating instruction. Doug Riseborough of the Montreal club was also here in 1975 and 1976. Jets practice Prospective members of the Lucan-Ilderton Jets for the upcoming 1977-78 OHA Continental Senior hockey season will hit the ice lanes for the first time at the Huron Park arena Monday night at 8 p.m. Jets manager Don Urbshott reports that practices will continue September 15 and 19 at the "same hour and September 25 at 2 p.m. During that training period, the Jets will meet the London Kings in an exhibition game in London on Wednesday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m. All interested players are asked to attend the opening practices or get in touch with manager Don Urbshott or coach Jack Chipchase. Good racing week This week proved to be very successful for several area harness race owners and drivers. A more detailed account of the accomplishments of Crediton horseman Dennis Morrissey appears elsewhere on these sports pages. Morrissey's top feat was driving Angela's Day to a new lifetime record of one-fifth of a second less than two minutes at Greenwood in Toronto Friday night. Jack Darling of the Exeter IGA family is doing ex- tremely well at Batavia Downs near Buffolo. Darling has knocked off five straight wins with Terry Herbert and has had good success with several other horses. Missile Almahurst, a three year old pacer owned by Bill Ellerington and Lee Paul finished third in one heat of a top race at Flamboro Downs Saturday afternoon and sixth in the final. Lee Paul told us at a Kirkton ball tournament Monday that Missile Almahurst now has $95,000 on his two year card of racing. The local pacer has been consistent with 12 victories and eight other "in the money" finishes in 24 starts. He will now race at Hazel Park in Detroit. While talking about racing, Seelster Farms of Lucan will have 25 yearling colts for sale in Toronto on October 15 and 16. The general public is invited to inspect these colts at the Van Bussel Farms on Sunday, September 25, The farm is located at the corner of highway 4 and the Roman Line, adjacent to St. Patrick's School, south of Lucan. Of the yearlings to go on sale, 21 were bred by the Van Bussel's and use the Seelster name while four others are be- ing sold on an agent basis. All of the consignees are eligible for the Ontario Sire stakes and a number of other stakes in Canada and the United States. GUARD AGAINST Sports Spotlight Poor luncheon
