Good news for arena fund
Middlesex County
Public and Secondary School
BUS ROUTES
School Year 1977-78
Secondary schools open on Tuesday, September 6 and public
elementary classes commence on Wednesday, September 7
(Tuesday is a Professional Activity Day for elementary school
teachers).
School buses in the County will initially follow the same routes as last
year with the following changes:
ROUTE #3
Start: 7:45 a.m.
First pick up at Centre Sideroad and Roman Line; north on Roman
Line to Townline; east on Townline to Concession #12, Biddulph
Township; south on Concession #12 to Centre Sideroad; west on
Centre Sderoad to Concession #10; south on Concession #10 to
Langford Road; west on Langford Road to Highway #23; north on
Highway #23 to Centre Sideroad; west on Centre Sideroad to Bid-
dulph Lucan Schools.
ROUTE #4
Start: 7:55 a.m,
First pick up at Whalen on Highway #23; south on Highway #23 to
Centre Sideroad; east on Centre Sideroad to Concession #10; north
to Lot #19 and return south to Sideroad #20; east on Sideroad #20
to Concession #12; south on Concession #12 to Highway #7; west on
Highway #7 to -Highway#4; north on Highway #4 to Biddulph —
Lucan Schools.
MINOR ROUTE CHANGES
Biddulph Luton Schools
ROUTE #5 will traverse the newest part of Wilberforce Heights on
Nicholine Street to Albert Street.
ROUTE #6 will traverse Langford, Ellen and Albert Streets.

Patricia Lynn Fisher and Raymond Philip Carter were united in
marriage August 20, 1977 at Lucan United Church by Rev, Keith
Brown. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Len Fisher, Lucan and
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Carter, London are parents of the groom, The maid
of honour was Lynn Stanley and the bridesmaids were Brenda Parnell,
Pam Carter an Sherry Reid. The best man was Russ Carter and guests
were ushered by Brad Taylor, Wayne Hodgins and Joe Carter. Timmy

Five accidents investigated •
Constable D.R. Vance listed Parkhill collided on Highway 23,
damages at $2,000 when vehicles just north of County road 47. 'The

During the past week officers
of the Lucan detachment of the
Ontario Provincial Police in-
vestigated a number of theft,
breakin and mischief oc-
currences.
Sometime Thursday night or
Friday morning, four Canadian
flags were stolen from individual
residences in Lucan. They were
valued at $15 each. Constable
W.T. Hodgins is investigating.
Jewelry and money valued at
$321 was taken in a recent
breakin at a Stanley Street home
in Lucan. Of the stolen property
$293 has been recovered and two
suspects have been charged.
Friday morning in London
township a cultivated patch of
marijuana was located. The
Mr. & Mrs. Hans Rosch and
family enjoyed a camping trip to
Ottawa and Quebec last week and
called on Mr. Rosch's brother
while in that area.
Mr, & Mrs. Rea Neil visited a
long time friend, Mrs. Wm.
Walker, near Strathroy, Sunday.
Mr. & Mrs, Don Brock, Bruce
and Beth, Wasaga Beach, spent a
few days last week with their
aunt and uncle, Mr. & Mrs. Art
Hodgins and family. Tuesday
evening, all were guests of Laura
and Peter McLean, Con. 12, Lobo
Township.

Special service
by Masonic Lodge
A special treat is in store for
everyone in Lucan and area, on
Sunday afternoon, September 18
at :3 pmi., just prior to the Beef
Barbecue, at the Lucan Arena,
Dr. Angela Armitt has been in-
vited to be the guest speaker at
an Ecumenical Service in the
Hall, sponsored by the Masonic
Irving Lodge 154.
Special music will be provided
by the joint choirs of the village,
by the "Corner Stones" and by
the "Modified Melodies" ladies'
quartette, etc.
Everyone is welcome. Come
and meet all your friends and
make new ones.
Plan barbecue
to aid arena fund
At a joint meeting of the Lucan
and Community Arena Board and
the Finance Committee last week
the wheels were put in motion to
prepare for a giant Beef Bar-
becue, with fresh corn-on-the-cob
to be held Sunday afternoon
September 18 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
Since there will be a limit on
sales, it is advisable to get your
advance sale tickets early to
avoid disappointment. These will
be available at numerous outlets
in the village, Clandeboye and
Granton and from members of
the Board and the Finance
Committee by the end of this
week. Come and enjoy a good
feed!

Two serious acts of mischief
occurred Friday. At about 10:30
a.m. a pickup truck parked on the
Lucan IGA lot was splashed with
green paint. Fortunately the
owner discovered the paint
before it dried and was able to
remove it.
Also, Friday, four garbage
cans attached to the light stan-
dards on Lucan's Main Street
were set on fire and burned.
Police believe children are
responsible for these acts of
vandalism.
Friday night, a quantity of
straw was thrown around the
Main Street of Lucan. A Lucan
man has been charged with lit-
tering the highway.
United Church catered to the
Fevery-Smith' wedding Saturday
at the new community centre in
Lucan.
Judi Henry, Joan Amos, and
Joan Lockyer are holidaying at
Long Point this week.
The Country Music Jamboree
Sunday was quite successful due
to the efforts of Mr. & Mrs.
Clarence Carter and the 'Clan-
deboye community.
Many thanks to all the en-
tertainers as well as the workers,

goodly sum to the new Com-
munity Centre at Lucan.
Orville Rollings is a patient in
University Hospital where he is
to undergo surgery this week.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Latta spent the
weekend at a cottage at Bayfield.

daughter, Tanya Lee.

Officials of the Lucan Com-
munity Centre Board received
some good news this week from
Robert Welch, Ontario Minister
of Culture and Recreation,
A letter to clerk Ed Melanson
reports a Wintarlo grant for
reconstruction of the Lucan
arena will now total $523,566.62.
This is a considerable increase
in Wintario monies from the
original estimate.
Total estimated cost of the new
arena is $1,010,349.94. This
amount will be covered by
$225,000 in Community Centres
grants and $261,783,31 necessary
from local donations in addition
Three wins
in soccer
Lucan minor soccer teams won
three of four games played over
the weekend against
Thamesford. The fourth ended in
a tie.
The Lucan squirts romped to a
7-0 victory, the pee wees were in
front 4-1 and the atoms won 3-0,
The mosquito game ended in a 1-
1 draw. Kevin Koricina and Ron
Van Geel with three goal per-
formances led the squirt scoring
attack. The odd goal was kicked
by David Manders and Ian Craig
picked up the shutout.
Ken McManus with a two goal
effort and single scores by Paul
Wraith and Rick Hall were
responsible for the pee wee
victory. Scoring in single fashion
for the atoms were Jesse
Crawford, Brent Fowles and Jeff
Shipley. The shutout went to
Gerry Emery.
The lone mosquito goal came
from the foot of Philip Clarke.

The latest letter from Mr.
Welch was in response to concern
shown by Lucan Council and the
Centre Board to a July 25 letter
listing a Wintarlo grant of a much
lesser amount.
The letter from Mr. Welch was
as follows:
"I am advised that the letter of
July 25, 1977 sent to you by
Michael Noon, Manager of the
Capital Support Unit, regarding
the above Wintario project has
caused you some concern.
I understand that after in-
formation was provided by
representatives of that Unit and
our field office, you obtained a
more recent statement from your
engineer concerning the struc-
tural implications of repairing
the Lucan Memorial Arena,
I have asked my staff to further

you all know, our page has suf-

organization, then write or type it
up and the news is picked up on

The executive of the U.C.W.1
will meet at 7 p.m. tonight to:
finalize plans for the annual'
chicken barbecue to be held on
Wednesday, September 21 in the
General Assembly Room and the
C.E. Rooms; and the Church
grounds, weather permitting.
Baked potatoes, cabbage salad,
home made pies and cakes will be
on the menu, as well as a half
chicken for adult portion and a
quarter for a child's portion.
Take-outs to shut-ins (only) will
be made but anyone may take out
their own meals, please bring
your own containers.
(Never hire a man who wears a
straw hat and smokes a pipe. If
he isn't chasing his straw hat,
he's trying to light his pipe.)
Officers of the Lucan detach-
ment of the Ontario Provincial
Police investigated five ac-
cidents. Three persons suffered
injuries and damages totalled
$6,770.
Monday at 2 p.m, on Con-
cession 14 in London township,
just west of the Cameron
sideroad, a pickup truck driven
by Ruth Ann Parkinson, 11,1t. 4
Denfield left the roadway and
rolled over. The driver received
minor injuries and Constable,
G.J. Barker set damages at
$2,500.
A van driven by Chris Mit-
sovich, London collided with a
truck driven by Brian Hopper,
Palmerston. Constable G.N.
Wilcox set damages at $1,250. The
mishap occurred on Highway 23,
three quarters of a mile north of
Highway 7.
Saturday at 9;30 a.m. at the
intersection of Highways 4 and 7
at Elginfield, vehicles driven by
Carol Beatson, R.R. 4, Denfield
and Jean Murphy, Lucan were in
collision. Constable W.T. Hodgins
listed damages at $1,000.
John Robarts and his wife
Judy, both of Oakville were taken
to University Hospital by
Haskett's Ambulance after the
motorcycle they were riding blew
a tire on Highway 4 between
Concessions 14 and 15 in London
township. Constable N.A.
Campbell estimated damages at
$20.
