Two Dashwood teams and one from Crediton are still well in contention for provincial championships. The Dashwood Tigers have taken the first successful step towards the OBA Senior 'D' title by eliminating Hagersville in two straight games. The Tigers are awaiting the winner of a series between Woodslee and Thorndale. The deciding game in that set goes Saturday in Woodslee. Tiger manager Joe Fulop expects his club will travel to either Thorndale or Woodslee on the Labour Day holiday and be back in Dashwood Friday night. He said signs will be posted as soon as the series dates are finalized. Other teams still in the running are Whitby, Clarksburg, Renfrew and a team from the Sault Ste. Marie area. The Tigers should fare well in further competition as they have a well rounded pitching staff. Ready to take a regular turn on the mound are southpaw Jim Guenther and right handers Perry Stover and Paul Brooks. Also available are Doug McIsaac and Glen Thurman. Jim Guenther is also providing the big bat for the Tigers with his home run drives. He recently slugged a ball at the Crediton diamond which landed on the roof of the Stephen township building. In the Tigers 8-6 win over Hagersville, Guenther smash- ed a home run which the old timers claim almost equalled the distance reached some 20 years ago by St. Thomas native Bob Stormes. The Dashwood pee wees are also looking forward to participation in OBA playoffs after eliminating Exeter two games to one. Coach Bob Hayter will take his youngsters to Thornton Saturday afternoon with the return contest set for Dashwood Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Other possible Dashwood opponents remaining are Harrow, Watford and Paris. The Crediton juveniles easily disposed of Ingersoll in two straight games and is awaiting further competition. Here is a club which is strictly co-operative effort among the players and doesn't have an official manager or coach. Champion paddlers We would like to pass on sincere congratulations to Rene and Xavier Boogemans for their excellent ac- complishment in winning Gold Medals at the Ontario Summer Games in Kitchener over the weekend. We talked to the pair Monday afternoon and were thrill- ed with their description of their efforts in the expert marathon canoe race. Rene and Xavier who hail from Hensall and Grand Bend, respectively edged a pair from Windsor by only a few inches in a nine mile race on Guelph Lake. The local paddlers although leaders for the first half were forced to come from behind in the last 10 feet to win. When we said they won by 'a whisker' that was no ex- aggeration. The official time difference between the two boats was four-tenths of one second. They are a dedicated pair as they practice at least three times a week in the Ausable River at Grand Bend. If our memory serves us correctly they have picked up a lot of their, experience in the Bunny Bundle races and events at Hully Gully and the Parkhill Dam. Well done, fellows. Keep up the paddling. They say they are paddlers and not oarsmen. More good efforts Also over the weekend two youngsters who have grand- parents in the area were members of championship teams. Paul Fulton was the catcher on the Stratford J & S pee wee baseball team which won the Canadian championship in Vancouver. Paul is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Fulton, Stratford and he is the grandson of Garnet.and Olive Hicks, Exeter and Alvin and Millie Fulton, Elimville. Bob May was a member of the volleyball team which won the championship in the Summer Games at Kitchener. He is the son of Murray May, who was a track star at South Huron quite a few years ago. His grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Hedley May who live south of Exeter on Highway 4. Touch and run Plans are being formulated for resumption of the touch football league which was started last fall. League representative John Gillespie tells us the same four teams will be back to play each Sunday afternoon. The first practices will be held this Sunday noon at the high school field. The Tigers won the first game by a score of 8-6 in Dashwood Friday night and went back to Hagersville Sunday to wrap up the series by a score of 6-2. The Dashwood club will be back in action in second round play over the weekend but their opposition is not known. They will meet the winner of a deciding The season ended quickly for the Exeter Royals as they were ousted from further playoffs in the Southwestern Fastball Association Sunday night by the Lucan Irish. The Irish swept the best-of-five semi-final series in three straight games. They took the first game a week ago 3-2, came back Thursday night to win 9-3 and closed out the series Sunday night with a 6-1 victory. Lucan now advances to meet either Lieury or Nairn for the league championship. The Royals were defending cham- pions. Sunday's final game was close until the fifth when the Irish scored three runs. The Royals opened the scoring in the fourth as Steve Hodgins singled and scored on Terry Bournes single. The Irish tied the score in the bottom of the fourth as Kevin Lightfoot singled and scored on Brian Noyes' double. The Irish added three more in the fifth as Bob Cornish, Gerry Finkbeiner, Dennis Carty and Kevin Lightfoot singled to push in three runs. They scored two more runs in the sixth as Brian Lightfoot singled and Gerry Duskocy doubled. They go into the semi- finals against second-place West Williams, in West Williams, on Sunday, September 11 at 2 p,m. Exeter will be at home the following Sunday for the second game in the total-point series. The Lucan match Sunday was re-scheduled after a 1-1 draw the previous Sunday was ruled no- contest by the league executive. The league ruling followed the unusual decision of the referee to call the match 30 minutes short because of rain on August 21. Sunday's re-play found Exeter starting with ten men'because of injured and unavailable players. And about 15 minutes into the match, they were down to eight. Al Beattie, in goal, had to be taken to hospital with a severely dislocated thumb when, with about five minutes gone, Lucan forward Ian Fowles got a foot into the ball at the same time as Beattie's hands. Exeter centre Ron Funston followed Beattie off shortly afterward when he re- injured an ankle that had previously shelved him for six games. Lucan's three goals were then collected by Bob Andrews. Andrews got his first at 20 minutes gone; and the next two at seven and 10 minutes into the last half. Exeter's only goal was scored by Matt Muller at the 75-minute mark of the match, following missed penalty kicks by Tony Markus and Dick Lord, and three other near misses off Exeter drives. The Centennials managed the luxury of one substitute player for their night game in Ailsa Craig, however, and handed the league leaders their only loss in regular season games. Exeter, working off a brilliant RUNNER UP — Despite a shoulder injury which kept her performance below normal, Danette McLeod managed to end up as the runner-up in the 14 and under division in Saturday's Lake Huron zone swim meet. She also helped the relay team to a first place ribbon. T-A photo display of goal-keeping by Paul Van Esbroeck, dug into reserves of spirit and desire and pressed from the start. John Muller scored at 10 minutes, and then Silvio DiBernardo pulled Ailsa Craig even five minutes later, Matt Muller opened the second half With a goal at 55 minutes, and then Ron Funston, ignoring a taped-up ankle injured earlier in the day, drove in a goal off a break-away at the 70-minute mark for a 3-1 Centennial lead. That lead held until Jerry Swart knocked in Ailsa Craig's second goal with two minutes left in the game. One big blow produced the next three Dashwood scores in the fifth. It was a home run from the bat of Jim Guenther with John Hay ter and Glen Thurman on the base paths. It was one of the longest drives seen in the Dash- wood park in many years. A single by Jim Dietrich and a walk to Bob Hoffman set the stage for John Hayter's home run blast in the sixth.
