For the third consecutive year, Jana Lyn Stewart, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Andy Stewart of Ailsa Craig has been providing swimming lessons for the children in the community in the family's backyard pool each afternoon throughout the sum- mer holidays. "I have an average of seventy to eighty children each day coming for instruction", smiled Jana Lyn. "One day there were actually a hundred who came for lessons". Well qualified to teach and with knowledge of life saving, Jana' Lyn is assisted at times by her. brother Carl. Together they have helped many overcome their initial fear of water and find confidence and enjoyment in the pool as they increase their swimming abilities. For the older the more experienced children the opportunity of learning new strokes and diving techniques means much, and most are reluctant to forego their periods' of instruction and cold days. Home for the summer from Texas where she has been at- tending university, Jana Lyn sees .teaching the children as an op- portunity to getting to know the community children, as well as providing herself with summer employment. "Let's pretend we're going to go to sleep on water beds. See I jump up on my bed and relax and fall asleep", she tells a small group Of beginniers in the shallow end of the pool. They follow her example and learn to float. At the deeper end the older group practices diving techniques. For the many who have made the daily visit to the Stewart's pool, it has been a much more interesting and enriching sum- mer. Many will have learned how to swim because someone was willing to take time and interest in theM, and share their backyard pool. By MRS.
