E. SUMMERS GRANTON Thursday evening August 4 a bus. left Grant= Village, it's destination was the Country Playhouse Grand Bend, and by the time it had taken on more passengers along the Town Line and Whalen's Corners, it was filled to capacity. This was a trip sponsored by Court Valentine Lady Foresters in order to see the play "Babes in Arms" which was Howard Krueger and Mrs. Marvin Cressman, Waterloo brother and sister of Mr. Ross Krueger, and another brother, Mr. Stewart Krueger, Victoria, B.C. visited Ross Krueger at Huronview and Mrs. Krueger at Credi ton. Miss Nola Faist spent several days last week with Rev. & Mrs. Fred Faist, Stratford. Mrs. Peter Martin entertained members of her Sunday School class at K.O.A, Camp, south of Ailsa Craig, last week. Those who went were Ruth Ann and Lisa Martin, Robert and Randy Bowers, Kim and Jeff Galloway, Dean and Lee Watt and Karen Hodge. Assisting Mrs. Martin were Mr. Martin and Mrs. Ron being presented at the Playhouse. CHURCH NEWS At St. Thomas Anglican Church Rev. Mary Mills conducted the morning service, and took her sermon for the ninth Sunday after Trinity from the Gospel of St. Luke, and dwelt on the parable of the rich man and the unjust steward. Watt. They enjoyed crafts, Bible study, hikes, games and swim- ming. Rev. Bert Carr, London, conducted the service at Zion United Church Sunday morning. Special music was provided in duet by Miss Doris Schwartz and Mr. Doug Gill. Mrs. Gill played the introductory music. Mrs. Ross Haugh, ac- companied by Mr. & Mrs. Lorne Finkbeiner, toured Ontario for several days last week. They spent a day in Manitoulin Island, then went as far north as Sud- bury. Mrs. Mildred Bell, Hamilton, and Mrs. Olive Wilson, Dundas, were guests of Ella Morlock this week. "No servant can be the slave of two masters, he will be loyal to one, and despise the other, you cannot serve both God and money," said Rev. Mills. An interesting account was given by the minister on her vacation in Labrador, especially the friendliness of the people there. The service at St. Thomas will be at 8:15 a.m. next Sunday, the congregation of the United Church are invited to join in worship with St. Thomas while Rev. Elwood Morden is on vacation this month. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Roy McRobert on the arrival of twins, a son and a daughter at St. Joseph's Hospital London on Friday August 5, 1977, Mrs. McRobert is the former Judy Sherritt. Mr. & Mrs. Glen Blake have returned home after a trip to Newfoundland . Mr, & Mrs. Jim Stratton, Joshua, and Megan of Hamner north of Sudbury, recently spent a week with Mrs. Stratton's parents Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Lam- bert. Mr. & Mrs. Austin Hobbs at- tended the Powell reunion picnic on Sunday, held at Weldon Park Arva, there were 150 members of the family in attendance. By MRS. IRVIN RADER After two weeks of learning, cmfts and games, vacation Bible school at Zion Lutheran church came ta a close Friday evening when a' large number of parents, relatives and friends turned out to see the results. The theme, "Sing it Out, Jesus Loves You" was emphasized throughout. There was an average attendance of 75 with Pastor Mellecke in charge. Eighteen busy mothers and high school students gave up their time to teach. The Ladies Aid provided refreshments every day as well as Friday evening. Following a program of exercises and singing everyone had a chance to see the work in the basement before eager pupils carried their treasures home. Couple back from holiday By MRS. FRED BOWDEN CENTRALIA Mr. & Mrs. LaWrence Hirtzel returned home on Tuesday of last week after spending a few days with their son and daughter-in- law, Mr. & Mrs. Bill Hirtzel and family who were holidaying at Bayfield. Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Morgan spent a few days in Port Elgin last week returning home on Sunday after attending the funeral of Mrs. Morgan's brother, Mr. William Williams, on Saturday. Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Eaton of Chatham were weekend guests with Mrs. -John Thompson. A family get-together was held Monday on the lawn at Mrs. Thompson's home in celebration of her birthday. Among ' those attending were Mrs. Inez Dickey and daughter Joyce of Port Stanley. Mrs. Lorne Hicks was a weekend guest with Mrs. Fred Penwarden at her cottage at Grand Bend. Mr. & Mrs. Jack Essery en- joyed a week's scenic trip to P.E.I. and Nova Scotia. At Halifax they took the three hour bus trip of historical places. At Springhill they went down in a coal mine to a depth of 400 feet. Mr. & Mrs. Uel Schroeder and daughter Cary Laue returned to their home in Grand Forks B.C. after visiting for the past three weeks with Uel's brothers, Reg. and Harry Schroeder, and other members of the Schroeder family. Mr. & Mrs. Fred Bowden visited on Friday with Mrs. Barry Reid and girls who were holidaying at the Happy Hills Camping Ground near Lakeside and on Sunday they were guests for dinner with Mr. & Mrs. Ray Paynter and family, Kirkton. Mr. & Mrs. Dick Taylor ac- companied by Mr & Mrs. Russell Brock; Goderich returned home from a pleasant motor trip through NorthernOntario and the Ottawa Valley. Mr. & Mrs. William J, MacLean received a telephone call from their son Allan who is on a karate tournament in Hawaii, stating that they won the tournament over Hawaii for Ontario. They were royally entertained afterwards. DON'T BE SHY COME JOIN US! Several members of Mrs.Edith Beierling's family gathered at her home Friday evening with gifts and birthday cake on the occasion of her 80th birthday, Mrs. Verda Bosk, Detroit, who had spent a week with Mrs. Louella_ Tiernan, was ac-. companied back Thursday, .by Mrs. Tiernan, .Mrs. Ron Merner and Margaret Merner who returned home, Saturday. Mr. & Mrs. Siegfried Miller, Port Dover, spent Sunday with Mrs. Martha Miller. A welcome surprise was the visit of Ontario Lt-Gov. Pauline McGibbon, honorary president of the Senior Citizens of Ontario, who was in Goderich for the town's sesquicentennial. Mr. & Mrs. Russell Hoperoft, Waterdown, spent the weekend with Mr. & Mrs. George Tiernan. Mr. & Mrs. Hubert Miller were pleasantly surprised to have their daughter, Vicki, of South America attend their 25th wedding anniversary Saturday, August 6. She will return to her duties Wednesday, August 10 with a figure skating show. Zion Lutheran church held 'their _Sunday School and Service 'h the pavilion in the park followed by a picnic dinner served by Group 2 of the Ladies Aid. Pas tor M. Mellecke, superintendent, Don Rader and the Sunday School teachers conducted sports with the following winners. Running races, age 3-5, Bob Vanderworp; 6-8, Ross Keller; 9&10, Greg Becker; 11-13, Lisa Miller. Balloon relay, Lisa Miller and Lisa Vanderworp; shoe relay, Lisa Miller; three leg race, Patti Rader and Elizabeth Datars; wheel barrow race, Greg Becker and Ross Keller; back- ward race, Brian Rader. A candy scramble was'held for the small children. A tug-of-war climaxed the events with Brian Rader's team winning, There were several other tug-of-wars enjoyed, especially the one in which the women flattened the men. Mr. & Mrs. Don Hopkins, Pointe Claire, Quebec, and Len Hopkins, Vancouver, B.C, were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Stade and Sherrie. Mrs. Hilda Rader, Charles Martene, Mr. & Mrs. Ross Love, Mrs Helen Grieves, Mrs. Letta Taylor, Mrs. Flossie Willert and Mrs. Florence Keller attended the Huron County senior citizens picnic at St. Christopher's beach, Goderich, Sunday. The Youth at Zion ,Lutheran Church who call themselves Joy met Tuesday at the home of Patti Rader\ to dismantle their prize The 12th Gardiner reunion was held at the Londesboro Hall, Sunday July 31 with 48 in at- tendance. Gordon and Colleen llowatt were hosts. Mr. & Mrs, Ken Bearss con- ducted the sports.
