Leaving the family farm is
never easy but Ross Hargreaves
is looking forward to his new
career with enthusiasm.
A dairy farm owner since 1951,
Ross is excited about his position
as minister of Thames Road
United Church, beginning August
7.
The decision to enter the
ministry has been long and hard
but the decision had to be made.
"It's not easy to leave since
I've spent all these years building
up the farm. I thought I just
couldn't do it at this age but it
took momentum and grew and
grew", said Ross.
Ross became a licenced lay
preacher in 1963 but the decision
to enter the ministry came in the
spring of this year,
"Now that I look back, I think
it's been there since 1963 but I
wasn't ready to accept the call or
responsibility until this spring".
Adjusting to a new career and a
nev community at an age of "39
years plus" would discourage
many people but Ross is op-
timistic about adjusting to the
Thames Road community.
"I lean towards rural people at
this point because they're the
people I relate to and understand,
and I feel they would understand
me ", said Ross.
"I had a couple of opportunities
to go into a small town set up but I
felt this would be a better charge
at this point...I want to be a rural
minister to rural people".
Born in Ingersoll, Ontario,
Ross has lived his entire life in
the Sweaburg area with the
exception of four years overseas
during the Second World War, in
which hs saw active duty. Ross
was stationed in England,
Belgium and Germany and was
part of the occupational army for
nine months.
Ross has two older, married
daughters, Coyla Jean and
A
Rosalind, and a younger son,
Ted, who is parts manager at
John Deere, Green Acres.
Involvement in his work is one
of Ross' hobbies and his past
activities prove that fact. Ross
has been very active in the 4-H
movement as a leader for twelve
years and a past president. His
other activities include a past
presidency in the Oxford Holstein
Breeders Association and a
membership in the Masons since
1950.
The decision to enter the
ministry means Ross will be
leaving the family home but "it
doesn't have quite the effect on
them (the children) that it would
if they were younger. The family
has known that I've been in-
terested in it for a long time".
One crash
in GB area
Pinery detachment of the
Ontario Provincial Police

vestigated a car-bicycle collision

Box, London, and a bicycle
operated by Paul Larocque, R.R.
1 Mt. Brydges, collided causing a
total estimated damage of $150.
Pinery detachment reported 28
charges under the Liquor Licence
Act, ten Provincial Parks Act
charges, eight Highway Traffic
Act charges, and five charges
under the Narcotic Control Act.
Grand Bend detachment of the
Ontario Provincial Police

charges, 33 charges under the
Liquor Licence Act, 11 Criminal
Code charges and six Narcotic
Control Act charges.

Besides leaving his home area,
Ross will also face four years of
education before becoming an
ordained minister. Ross will take
one year general arts and one
year theology at Huron College,
University of Western Ontario.
The second and third year
theology must be taken at
Emmanuel College, Toronto.
There is a train, which tran-
sports students from London to
Toronto Tuesday and back again
Thursday so the theology courses
in Toronto should not interfere
with ministerial duties, said
Ross,
As a lay preacher, Ross may
perform funeral services but an
ordained minister must perform
the marriage and communion
sacraments, Reverend Bert
Daynard, Staffa, will exchange
with Ross for communion ser-
vices at Thames Road.
Ross and his wife, Coyle, plan
to move into the Thames Road
manse Tuesday, and will be
welcomed to the Church at an
introduction service Friday,
August 5, at Thames Road United
Church.
Ross began farming on his own
in 1951 after working with his
father for twelve years on the
farm. Ross' oldest son, Dwight,
24 will take over the 38-head .
holstein operation after being a
full partner for three years.

Three area residents were
bitten this week, with a dog,
squirrel and pony being the at-
tackers,
Sherri Ann Maxwell, 6, of
Hensall, was bitten by a squirrel
around 8:00 p.m., Sunday. The
incident occurred on Brock
Street.
The youngster was treated at
South Huron Hospital.
An 11-year-old London girl,
Ottewell blast
Continued from front page'
respect for Ottewell if he had
come to him personally to air his
criticism.
Ottewell then re-entered the
discussion by suggesting that the
fact the Heritage people had not
been notified of the removal of
the town hall furniture was
Shaw's fault.
He also asked if the Mayor was
aware that Mrs. Huntley had
apologized to the Chief of Police
for her remarks.
Shaw said that didn't surprise
him. •
The Mayor also said that if he
was supposed to tell the Heritage
people about the' removal of the
furniture he apologized for not
doing so,
"What did you apologize for?"
Ottewell asked.
"I'm apologizing to you for
misunderstanding you," Shaw
replied.
Ottewell then asked if he would
also apologize to the Chief for
remaining quiet when he was
being criticised by Mrs. Huntley.
"Definitely not," Shaw replied.
Ottewell then said he would
accept Shaw's apology.
"Is there anything else?" Shaw
asked of Ottewell.
"That's enough for tonight,"
the councillor replied.
