'Am I glad that I can
buy Bernardin Home
Canning Lids again."
Says Mrs. B. Boekestein from Dundas,
Ontario
And countless other people are saying the
same thing. You can now be assured of an
ample supply of dependable home canning
lids from Bernardin — the name you can
trust for trouble-free seals in home canned
foods. A name that also means savings in
time and expense.
Bernardin lids help you guard against
spoilage two ways.
1. The big feature is the 'snap'. Listen for it.
When the lid is properly sealed and the jar
heated, the Snap Lid snaps down in res-
ponse to the vacuum inside.
2. However, if you weren't around to hear
the 'snap', simply look at the lid. If it
curves slightly inward, you know you
have a perfect seal.
And all of this doesn't happen by accident.
It happens because Bernardin has the only
lid in the industry using a live latex sealing
ring around the edge. The result. . . a perfect
seal.
Insist on Bernardin next time you're at your
dealers. Our lids are available in a complete
range of sizes.

Breakfast is not my favourite
meal to eat in a restaurant. I
love fried eggs, but they can't be
fried just any old way. I like
them crisp on the bottom — not
leathery just crisp.
I have perfected the cooking
method, but' it's difficult to ex-
plain to waitresses. After receiv-
ing a few "You've got to be kid-
ding!" glances, I gave up, Now I
just order a fried egg, sunny-side
up or once over lightly.
When some friends and I went
to Ottawa in June. I compared
bre.dtfasts in three different at-
mospheres.
First, we ate at our motel. The
tiny dining area was located in
the front porch of the owner's
house, and his wife prepared the
meal in her own kitchen. The
chrome tables and chairs were
set simply, the way they would
be at home. A coffee-maker sat
near our table, and we could help
ourselves to as much as we
wanted. The menu was brief, but
the prices were reasonable,
Ten minutes after taking our
orders, our hostess served our
eggs. They weren't crisp on the
bottom, but they tasted good.
While we relaxed over a second
cup of coffee, she chatted about
the weather, our trip, the sights
to see around Kingston and some
of her experiences in the motel
business.
The next morning we ate in a
restaurant beside a motel in Ot-
tawa. The spacious dining room
contained twelve oak tables with
matching chairs. Chandeliers
hung from the ceiling. At one end
of the room was a stone
fireplace. The other three walls
consisted primarily of huge bay
windows; at each window hung
two flower pots overflowing with
gorgeous blooms. Stereo music
played softly in the background.
Although the menu was longer
than the one we saw the previous
morning, the prices were higher
as well.
We had plenty of time to ad-
mire our surroundings; we
waited almost an hour for
breakfast. The waiter was ef-
ficient and courteous; he seemed
to be able to handle the five oc-
cupied tables. The hold up must
have been in the kitchen. One of
my friends ordered bran muf-
fins, and I think the chef must
have baked them from scratch.
When our food finally arrived,
the muffins were burned, and we
weren't surprised. But the eggs
were a different story! If they
hadn't been hot, I would have
suspected the cook forgot to put
them on the pan. After growling
for an hour, my stomach re-
jected the idea of sending them
back and waiting for another six-
ty minutes. I ate them, but I
doubted whether I'd ever be able
to face another fried egg.
The third morning, we ate in a
typical small town restaurant
By ELAINE TOWNSHEND
complete with a juke box, a pop
machine and a candy and
cigarette bar. A half-dozen stools
lined a counter, and the rest of
the room was filled with wooden
tables and chairs. Over each
table was thrown a different-
coloured cloth. (Ours had a little
hole in it.)
The price list was midway
between the other two. From our
seats, we could see into the large
clean kitchen; the cook seemed
well-organized. The waitress
knew most of the customers by
their first names. She was too
busy for chatter, but she was
pleasant even with us strangers,
My girl friend assured me the
eggs would be alright, if we
ordered them once over lightly.
"Okay, I'll try again," I gave in.
Twelve minutes later our eggs
were served. They were well-
cooked — not crisp, mind you,
but well-cooked.
What is the moral of this saga?
I'll take a homey atmosphere, a
hole in the tablecloth and well-
cooked eggs above a luxurious
setting anytime.
