Nationalization of the beverage
alcohol trade would help solve
Canada's drinking problem, and
other denominations should join
the United Church in urging it,
The United Church Observer
° says editorially in its current
issue.
The United Church has been
officially urging nationalization
of the industry since 1944 but, The
Observer says, "no Canadian
government has given the matter
serious, consideration",
Meanwhile, it says, "thoughtful
Canadians are concerned about
r.
the results of growing in-
temperance and the vast social
and economic costs of drinking".
There are now a third of a million
alcoholics among Canadian
workers and their absenteeism
frorn work costs over $1 million a
day, A report to Parliament last
year estimated the annual cost of
alcohol-related problems to
Canada at about $2 billion.
The United Church approved
nationalization on grounds. that
"the immense financial revenues
behind the liquor traffic con-
stitute the greatest obstacle to its
being handled effectively",
"If other churches can't agree
with nationalization, let them
come up with a better idea," The
Observer says. "Surely this is a
problem of such magnitude that
the Christian community in
Canada - supported by non-
Christians - should be able to
speak with one voice."
First we make our habits and
then our habits make us.
