,The Grand Bend United pee-
woes lost a close 4-3 decision to
the Ontario Hurons, Sunday.
Playing away from home and
Oiith five of their regular players
Missing, the "Pinery Panthers"
faced a massive struggle against
the league leading Hurons.
,,,Only good defensive work from
full-backs Randy Graham and.
Andy VanLeeuwen kept the score
down to 2-0 at the interval. Bend
goalkeeper Drew Gray thwarted
the leaders on several occasions
in the second-half, but it was late
in the game before the "Pan.
(thers" started a serious offensive
r4vival.
iff' a' Centre-forward Andrew
190uper scored two well taken
als, and inside-eight Greg
out capped off a good display
en he added goal number three
tiir Grand Bend.
„Ilte "Panthers" have fallen
kt0o third place in their section of
tt-e South Western Ontario All
ar League, but have chance to
strengthen this position when
they take on the second placed
Ornia National AU Stars at
brand Bend on Sunday.
The earthy wood and stone
hues of the Oakwood Dining
Room in Grand. Bend supplied the
perfect setting for fashions from
Mexico as the Grand Bend
Lioness Club's summer fashion
show took place.
A luncheon preceded ,the
showing of Mexican hand made
originals and many of the 162
women present could not manage
to finish their beautifully
decorated salad plates heaped to
the brim with salads, meats, eggs
and tomatoes, followed by fresh
fruit cocktail,
The fans whirred softly
overhead and the windows
allowed the lake breeze in to cool
the dining room as, well
replenished, the ladies sat back
to enjoy a touch of Mexico.
The Lioness' modeled the
unique fashions with style and
poise as Pat Fading and Brenda
Heist commentated, Nick Carter
of the Sun and Surf Shops in
Grand Bend sponsored the
fashion show by importing the
complete line of hand crafted
garments designed by Carol De
Gomez of Puerto Vallarta,
Mexico.
Most of the garments were of
,unbleached cottons and muslin
with brilliant colored 'hand
embroidery and bead work
bringing the plain colors to life.
The embroidery and beading
on one garment was so intricately
done the designer, Ms, De Gomez
told the ladies it took close to a
week of working at it every day to
complete the garment.
Ms De Gomez expounded on
her shop in Puerto Vallarta
saying she expands a little every
year, but contracts most of the
embroidery and beadwork out to
married women in the town.
Not to be forgotten was delicate
crochet work giving the bodices
of muslin gowns that delicately
feminine not quite see through
look in soft earthy beiges.
even the bathing suits were
embroidered and following the
show were among the first items
sold, Very few of the garments
made it back to the Sun Shop as
they were sold following the
fashion show,
Both Mr. Carter and the
Lioness' termed the showing a
complete success and hope next
year's will be just as good.
