When the Lucan Irish juniors start the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" schedule this fall, they will have a new coach behind the bench, This week, Irish manager Bob Taylor announced that former St. Marys Lincoln junior star Bill Bannerman had accepted the position. Bannerman, a graduate of minor ranks in St. Marys was a member of the LincoIns when they won the all-Ontario Junior "B" championship in 1961, Other well known members of that team were Jean Paul Parise, Jack Nairn, now coach of the Stratford juniors and Jacques Cousineau. After two years in Junior "A" ranks with Niagara Falls and Oshawa, Bannerman went on to a six year career in professional hockey with Clinton, New York in the Eastern league. He then went into retirement for five years, being coaxed out to join the Lucan-Ilderton Jets in the fall of 1975, The new Irish coach said he will be stressing good positional play with an emphasis on a good defence. Manager Bob Taylor in making the announcement of Ban- nerman's appointment said, "We hope to have a good strong club this year and I feel we have the right fellow to do the 'coaching." Taylor said the Irish would lose only three players from last year's team. They are goalie Kevin Lightfoot, and Dave Smith and Bob Cornish. Matty Muller, with, a perfect hat-trick, and Tony Markus, on a late-game penalty kick, sent Exeter Centennials to a 4-1 soccer win over St. Pauls Sunday in Ausable district play. Muller, normally a midfielder, was at centre-forward for Ron Funston, out with an ankle in- jury, and played the position with style. Two of Muller's goals, which bring his season totol to six, were scored in the first half, His third, for a pure hat-trick, came in the last half; and was capped near game's end with a penalty shot by Markus at right centre-back, who deceived the St. Pauls' keeper completely, with a rising and curving ball. Joe Dewys, St. Pauls' captain and striker, took advantage of a series of Exeter defensive mistakes to get his club a one- goal lead early in the game. That lead held for most of the first half until Muller drove the ball in for Exeter with a right- footed volley while airborne and falling during some hard scrambling in front of the St. Pauls' net. He followed that up about ten minutes later by tapping a See us for ground ball by the St. Pauls' keeper when the keeper badly misjudged the play ip front of him. Muller's third goal in sequence was a deftly delivered chip over the net-minder about midway through the final half. The Centennials had been idle since winning the Association 'B' Trophy in tournament play two weeks ago, and the effects of the lay-off were occasionally in evidence last Sunday. Their game sometimes had the rythmn of a roller-coaster. Yet Exeter minor soccer teams won three of four games in regular league play against St. Marys, Saturday, The mosquitoes romped to a7-0 victory, the pee wees blanked their opposition 2-0 and the atoms won by a score of 6-2. The squirt game ended in a 1-1 tie. Steve Gould kicked three goals to lead the atoms in their victory. Allan Pym was next with a two for most of the match they displayed the fine and interesting brand of soccer they have worked themselves up to during eleven games in league and tournament play, In its best moments last Sunday, the club got an excellent performance from every player on the field. The Centennials will be away for invitational games within the association at Taxandria next Sunday. They will be at home to meet Grand Bend at Canner's Field at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 24. goal effort and George Pratt added a single score. Brian Quinn took care of the only Exeter scoring in the squirt contest on a penalty shot. The Exeter Ford pee wee goal scorer were Doug Hoffman and Chri Van Gerwen. It was the Fords sixth consecutive win. In an exhibition game, the atoms downed Goderich 4-1 with Steve Gould, Claude Madore, Rick Gilfillan and Ken Boersma taking care of the scoring. The four Exeter clubs will meet Thamesford Saturday morning at the Canners field at 9.30 a.m. Laithwaite scores low In Tuesday's regular ladies competition at the Exeter golf course, Peary Laithwaite chalked up the low gross score, Dorothy Kipfer was the low net winner, Gloria McFalls required the least number of putts and Ann Gray was named the most honest golfer, The Exeter elaybird, gun club has started to operate at their new location, J/2 mile north of Highway 83 on concession 3 and 4. second concession west from Highway 4). Skeet shooting will be con- ducted every Saturday afternoon, K-W swimmers soon to get at pool Kirkton-Woodhana pool is complete and should be ready for swimmers within a day or two according to Gerry Van Russel of Frank Van Bussel and Sons, Lucan. Water has been pumped into the pool but now the drawback is a lack of power to circulate the water, said Van Bussel. One end of the pool fence should also arrive from Hamilton shortly, he said. Van Bussel said there have been a few unforseen drawbacks during construction which have delayed opening the pool, "There had been a lot of people in the pool with muddy shoes and it took about three-quarters of a day to clean it before we started painting", said Van Bussel. The original contract with Van Btissel stipulates that the pool be substantially completed by July 15. Dr. Norm Amos, chairman of the Kirkton-Woodham pool committee said there will be an opening ceremony when swimming can begin at the pool, By MRS. M. H.
