Grigg said the idea of a cen- tennial celebration arose during a steam engine railroad ride held as part of the July 1976 Ilderton centennial. Someone joked that it wouldn't take much to extend the line to Denfield and that was where it started, he said, A few ads were placed in the papers for interested people to meet and 46 attended our first meeting, said Grigg. Denfield, a village of ap- proximately 100 people, will be focusing its celebration on the old Denfield store and post office, The combination store and post office was built in 1877 while the village was still known as Brecon but, for postal purposes, letters were addressed to Denfield. Mrs. Mossie Rosser, a former operator of the store, will of- ficially open the centennial celebrations following a parade at 11 a.m., July 16, featuring the Midlanders marching hand from London, Middlesex MPP Bob Eaton and Middlesex-Lambton MP Larry Condon will also attend the opening ceremonies with several local dignitaries. Special events will include a beard-growing contest, Cen- tennial Queen contest, horse-shoe pitch, fiddler's competition, log sawing contests, tug-o-war, and bicycle races. Food concessions, an adult refreshment tent, beef barbeque, centennial costume dance, and a display of antique farm, machinery will be among other centennial attractions at the south-east end of Denfield. Sunday will include a pancake breakfast followed by a com- munity church service at Den- field Baptist Church, Grigg said the attendance figures for the celebrations will depend upon the weekend weather but figures from 1,000 to 5,000 have been tossed around. The Denfield centennial committee has also assembled a 67-page booklet of the village history for sale during centennial celebrations, We Specialize in Custom Processing, Curing and Smoking HINDS SIDES FRONTS ROUND STEAK RUMP ROAST Medium GROUND BEEF ,• Fully Processed, Fully Processed, Fully Processed, .$ • 1 Ib, OW 694: lb. $1.28 lb. $1,28 lb. 694 MAPLE LEAF 100 YEARS OLD — The Denfield store and post office will be the focus of Denfield's Centennial celebrations July 16 and 17.
