Bethel Reformed Church marks the 25th anniversary of the formed organization of Exeter's Bethel Reformed Church. This took place in the Legion Hall in Exeter, where worship services were conducted until November, 1953. At that time the Main Street United Church (now the home of the Exeter Pentecostal Taber- nacle) made its facilities available and the Bethel congregation worshipped there until its own building was erected at Huron St. East. The congregation was served during these years by the late Neil Eelman, layworker, and the pastors. Carl Schroeder (1953- 1955), Richard VanFarowe (1956- 1965) (Zeeland, Mich.), Harmen Heeg (1965-1972) (Indianapolis, Ind.)and Henry VanEssen (1973-) . The original purpose of the congregation was to serve and-- reach out especially to all those of Dutch origin, since language, social, and cultural changes because of immigration created specific social, economic and spiritual needs which were more easily ministered to by those of the same background. But circumstances have changed greatly since 1952. Not Bethel congregation marks 25th birthday with social only did the newcomers become established and the congregation double in size, but far more important, it is clear that the original purpose has practically disappeared. The present Bethel Reformed Church seeks to be a church for peop4 of whatever national, denominational or racial background, The demonination to which the congregation belongs, the Reformed Church in America, was begun in Manhatten in 1628, and is solidly within the main- stream of Protestantism and a member of the Presbyterian family of churches. The congregation saw three of its young men go into the Hurondale. WI see weaving The Hurondale Women's Institute held their June meeting at Usborne Central School June 29 with June Stewart, vice- president in charge. The meeting opened with Institute Ode and Mary Stewart collect. A trip was planned to Grand Bend Playhouse for August 10 at 8.30, Cars are to leave the Exeter Library at 7 p.m, Alma Rundle, Fern Dougall, Louise Oke, Myrtle Brock and June Stewart were named to look after catering to the birthday party at Huronview August 17. The area convention is to be held at Vanastra September 28. It was voted to send a $5.00 donation to the Exeter Rec, Centre to buy a kitchen ap- pliance, Anna Keller, convener of Resolutions took the chair for the rest of the meeting. A sing song and musical contest was much enjoyed. Marion Porter commented on the motto, "Resolutions are a pleasant crop to sow." Lois McFalls gave current events. Mrs. Ena De Haan of Exeter very ably demonstrated the art of weaving and macrame and showed many pieces of her work. There will be no meeting in July or August. The next meeting is September 26, For the sixth consecutive year The Volunteer Comitittee of The Gallery-Stratford is running their widely acclaimed Festival of Arts and Crafts, July 8,9 and 10 in the Stratford Arena. The 25th anniversary will be marked by a congregational social get-together with friends and former members on the church lawns 'on Saturday evening, and by two worship services on Sunday in which Rev. VanFarwe will preach in the morning and Rev. Siebrand Wilts in the evening. Fifteen jewellers, six potters, eight batik makers or weavers, nine wood makers and sculptors plus other mediums such as dried flowers, needlework, candles, leather and hung art will be tempting the public. What a feast for the buyer! Those looking for Christmas presents are sure to be drawn to felt toys made by Marthe Jocelyn of Toronto or wooden toys by Douglas Elgie of the House of Punch in Bothwell, Ontario. Wonderful wooden puzzles made by the James Purdue School for the Mentally Handicapped in St. Mary's would delight any child. People looking for something unusual will be interested in Paula Davies' acrylic art clocks. Others may want to take home a piece of Lynn Kestle's beautiful stained glass or a Chinese painting by Virginia Chan. Even those whose taste lies more in the mouth than the eye will be able to feast from the Rheo Thompson candy booth which is to be manned by women from the Volunteer Committee. A special opening will take place Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m. Richard Keelan, a well-known singer from Perth County, will provide the entertainment. The mood will be festive; the selec- tion of crafts at its best. Last year 5,000 people attended the fifth annual festival of arts and crafts. They, through their purchases, provided enormous financial support to The Gallery, funding the Art in the schools' extension programme and the free children's classes for Art through Perth County. -.Z.
