wins
The Grand Bend United Pee-
Wee soccer team continued their
winning ways when they
recorded a convincing 5-2 away
victory against the Sarnia C.C.
All Stars at Agincourt Park,
Sunday.
Sarnia took an early lead, but
the "Pinery Panthers", came
back with two unanswered goals
from inside-left Nick Van-
denberk.
Grand Bend stormed further
ahead after the interval, and it
was Nick Vandenberk who again
found the opening in the Sarnia
defence, scoring twice with a
fierce drive and a flying header,
Centre-forward Mike Wedlock
ensured victory for the Pan-
thers when he shot home goal
number five.
Bill Mennen was outstanding
on the Bend right-wing, and four-
goal hero Nick Vandenberk was
named most valuable player of
the game.
The Panthers have now moved
into sole possession of second
place in their division of the South
Western Ontario Minor Soccer
League, and after an idle week
will prepare to face the league
leading Hurons, July 10,
Stephen blast dams
Stephen township dynamited
five beaver dams near Crediton
Tuesday to alleviate water
drainage problemt.
Stephen councillor Doug
Russell said the township had
received complaints from far-
mers upstream from the dams
because drainage systems were
not working properly.
"When they (beavers) start
causing drainage onto
agricultural land and roads I
think they have to be removed",
said Russell, There were several
hundred acres of low-lying land
involved in the decision to
dynamite the dams, he said.
Russell estimated two beavers
were involved in the construction
of the dams.
Russell said there was a dam
remaining near Centralia air
base which would still be causing
drainage problems.
