Last Fall many small towns were "invaded" by a group of magazine subscription salesladies (all young and at- tractive) who approached young male teenagers on the street successfully getting various amounts of money in ad- vance for magazine subscrip- tions. The name of this fast moving company was PAR PUBLISHERS SERVICE, We were unable to get any refunds because the amount involved was always un- der $50.00. Some recent letters from readers in the Exeter area in- form us that this type of selling has started again, but the firm name this time is, EAST WEST READERS SERVICE. We have made enquiries about this firm but until we hear further we urge you to use CAUTION if approached by one of their representatives. Canada Day, July1 A disgruntled reader writes, that when she tried to book an Air Canada flight under their new low cost Canadian City Charter plan she was told that no seats were available as they were all sold out, Under this charter class plan she said her return fare to Vancouver would only have been $222 (from Toronto) instead of the regular $382. An Air Canada spokesman claims that their advertising for this plan, dearly stated that only a limited number of seats were available on any given flight, and that ob- viously the largest planes fly- ing at "off hours" were the ones that would have the most seats. "Basically", he said, "It was designed to fill empty seats on all flights, and this it has done, very quickly." As one travelled to Wembly one was never outside a built-up area. Mrs. Slaght saw the royal yacht in port the day her plane landed. There were, of course, many tourists in London for the Silver Jubilee celebration. One day Mrs. Slaght saw a five-mile-long crowd of people stretching from Buckingham Palace gates down The Mall. Buckingham Palace looked solid and plain, some of the windows seemingly curtainless. They saw the residence of the Queen Mother, of Princess Margaret and of Princess Anne. At No. 10 Downing Street the Prime Ministers' Conference was in session. They were somewhat taken aback when the guard said yes to their question whether they might go in and speak to Prime Minister Trudeau. English parks are beautiful. There were many flowers, with roses everywhere. It is a land of beautifully maintained churches, open to the public. There are still some bombed out areas that have not been rebuilt. They visited a very large estate that traces its history to the time of Henry V111. Now and then they saw a car with an American or Canadian licence plate. English cars are small, wisely, since their gasoline is twice the price of ours. Food and accommodation prices were reasonable. One easily became accustomed to their practice of eating more times a day than we. Scotland seemed to Mrs. Slaght a fairytale land. All roads are paved so that the countryside is dust free. There is no litter along roadsides or in streams. Cities are smaller than those in England and appeared to be less crowded. People were warmly friendly. There was still snow on the tops of mountains though the weather was warm. According to custom, people climb Ben Lomond June 21, the longest day of the year, spend the night on the summit and descend with the morning light. Darkness did not fall until eleven o'clock. The heather was not yet in bloom, but there were many other flowers.
