Bell & Laughton Solicitors for the Executor Exeter, Ontario 23:24:25c Detour route is closed off Two weeks ago, Exeter council agreed to a request from the Downtown Business Improvement committee to have Main St, blocked off for two days during the annual sidewalk sale. However, works superin- tendent Glenn Kells reported this week that the situation created a major problem in that Andrew St. between James and Huron St. will be under construction during the July 22-23 event and will not be available as a detour route, "It sure will create some problems," predicted Councillor Ted Wright, who said he realized the problem when the matter was previously discussed, He had opposed closing the street, Reeve Si Simmons said the matter could be handled by detouring traffic down two blocks. "But Albert St, is so narrow," commented Councillor Barb Bell. Wright said that two years ago, the ministry of transportation and communication ordered that Main St. be re-opened when it was found that large trucks were having difficulty negotiating the detour route. "All you're doing is hurrying up the day when they kick parking off Main St. if you prevent big trucks from getting through," Wright advised his fellow council members. When several members said they couldn't see any problem sending traffic onto the side streets, Wright asked them if they had ever attempted to wheel a large transport around a corner in Exeter, Mrs. Bell said the matter should be left up to the Reeveand businessmen. "We'll route it," Simmons replied. However , Kells threw another problem at council, noting that it was quite possible that the second coat of tar and ;chips would be applied on the town streets that weekend. Mrs. Bell then suggested the businessmen consider staging the event on a Monday and Tuesday when there was less traffic with which to contend. Her motion to leave the matter with the Reeve and the businessmen was approved. Page 24 Times-Advocate, June 23, 1977 HUGH A.
