Keen competition
Competition is proving very keen in the early stages of
the season of the Southwestern Fastball Association.
Nairn currently leads the league standings with the
Lucan Irish second followed by the Exeter Royals and
Lieury.
According to the results released Friday by secretary
Charlie Garrod of Ailsa Craig the Nairn club had suffered
only one loss in an even dozen starts while the Lucan club
sported a record of nine victories and two losses. The
Royals won seven of their first ten games and Lieury was
next with six wins and four losses,
The brand of fastball dished up by this league is ex-
cellent and all that is needed to make it complete would be
more fan support,
A full schedule of five games is played each Tuesday
and Thursday nights. Tonight, Thursday's only local action
has Huron Park taking on the league leading Nairn club in
Crediton.
Next Tuesday night, Beechwood will be in Exeter to
meet the Royals while the Lucan Irish will play host to
Huron Park. All games begin at 9 p.m.
While speaking of exciting ball action, there is plenty on
the agenda this weekend for the baseball buffs.
The Dashwood Tigers will be participating in two
crucial games in the Huron-Perth intermediate baseball
league.
Both contests are against the strong Clinton Colts and
both will be played at the Dashwood park. The first game
goes Friday night at 8 p.m. with the second slated for Sun-
day afternoon at 2 p.m.
These teams in the Huron-Perth along with the area
fastball teams play a good brand of ball and are worthy of
better fan support than they are receiving.
Dream comes true
The dream of all golfers of hitting the pinnacle with a
hole-in-one is very rarely realized but it happened very ear-
ly in life for one Exeter youngster.
At the Ironwood course over the weekend 10 year-old
Steve Laithwaite let drive from the fourth tee and the ball
travelled the distance of 140 yards and settled in the cup.
Steve has fairly reliable witnesses to his exciting
achievement. He was playing with his father Arn, the
manager of the local branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia and
his uncle John McLean.
Local tourney
Exeter will be the site over this coming weekend of the
annual pee wee baseball tournament sponsored by the
Western Ontario Athletic Association,
Mayor Bruce Shaw is helping to organize the tourna-
ment in an attempt to get minor baseball back to its former
popularity.
At least eight teams will be in action in the two day
event which starts Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Exeter
Community Park and will hopefully conclude by mid-
afternoon, Sunday.
Teams— expected in addition to Exeter are from
Crediton, Wingham, Listowel, Goderich, Walkerton,
Seaforth and Kincardine.
To honour minister
This may not seem to be of much interest to sports fans
when we talk about Sunday's planned celebration to honour
Rev. Harold Snell, but it really is.
Back in the days when we played softball and baseball,
Rev. Snell then stationed in the Auburn area was one of the
best umpires in Western Ontario.
Since giving up his umpiring chores, Rev. Snell has con-
tinued to enjoy the out of doors by going on regular fishing
trips.
We had the opportunity to chat briefly with Rev. Snell
at the Stephen Central School graduation Monday night and
asked about his fishing luck this year.
He indicated the trout were not as hungry this year say-
ing, "Several times this year Ted Pooley and I have come
home with less than our quota of 10."
Now that he is retiring, officially, we hope Rev. Harold
will have more time to enjoy his fishing and other ac-
tivities.
Top tourney this week
One of the best fastball tournaments in Western Ontario
will be held this weekend.
It will start Thursday night in Lucan and is sponsored
by the Lucan Irish fastball team headed by Ward Ellyatt.
Two of tonight's opening games Will have West Corners
playing the Lucan recreation all-stars and Kirkton facing
the Duchess of Kent from London.
One of Friday night's contests has the Exeter Royals
taking on the Southwestern league leaders from Nairn.
The tournament will continue each day until conclusion
Monday night with two championships being decided.
