Following their tremendous
performance against the highly
rated Sarnia National AU Stars
last week, the Grand Bend United
pee wee soccer team travelled to
London for an inter-league
exhibition encounter against
East London.
Play was even in the early
stages, but the visitors gradually
gained the lead and it was centre-
forward Nick Vandenberk who
put the "Pinery Panthers" ahead
after ten minutes. East London
fought back and equalised
through a penalty kick five
minutes later,
Grand Bend regained the
margin of play before and after
the interval and were unlucky not
to increase their lead. It was mid-
way through the second-half
before Nick Vandenberk put
Grand Bend ahead again,
The game ended with the
"Panthers" still pressing, but
failing to better their 2-1 lead.
Bend full-backs Andy
VanLeeuwen and Marty Mom-
mersteeg were outstanding,
while Nick Vandenberk and
right-winger Bill Mennen were
always a threat to the East
London defence.
The "Panthers" will face a
powerful Alchem football club in
South Western Ontario District
