Committee chairman extends thanks
A 'fantastic' success
Dear Sir:
What a response! No one on our
committee ever dreamed of the
success of the S.H.R.C. Tel-A-
Thon and Walk-A-Than
The sucess of participation and
the success of the funds raised for
the campaign is nothing more
than fantastic.
Who would have thought that
more than $10,000 could be raised
in a tel-a-thon and 400 walkers
could raise $15,000? That has to
be success.
Exeter's first TV show was just
unbelievable. How cap we ever
beat the success of the stars -
Bill Batten and Jo-Anne Dinney.
Just instant success! What a good
sport Bill was to allow his 10 year
old beard to be shaved for money
and right on TV, Thanks Jo-Anne
and Bill.
Hard work behind the scenes
helped to make the show a suc-
cess. Thanks to Carf Cann for
arranging the prizes and writing
out the draw tickets and of course
for your song, Thanks to Rob
Grant for preparing the studio
and preparing all the cards for
the set. Thanks to Alberta
Gregson, Lorne Preszcator and
Louise Pincornbe for their efforts
in answering the phones at the
High School.
Thanks to the CB Club for a
fantastic job in collecting the
pledges. Thanks to Exeter TV
Cable for the facilities and the
generous efforts of their
technician Dean Baker.
Thanks to the merchants who
supplied or donated prizes.
Thanks to Hopper-Hockey and

thanks to you and please accept
my apology,
The weekend was a
tremendous success and a lot of
people spent many hours in
planning and preparation. If
everyone can get their pledges
turned in on time it will make the
events even more, successful.
Thanks walkers (and runners)
and thanks callers for helping us
meet our objective in our fund
raising campaign. With success
like this it makes the effort all
more worthwhile,
We will all be proud of our new
recreation centre when we open
the doors Labour Day weekend
and it is through the hard work of
many people and the response of
citizens in this area that has
made it all a reality.
Sincerely,
Ron Bogart, Chairman

Announce
opening plans
Plans were unveiled this week
for the grand opening of the South
Huron Recreation Centre.
The proceedings will be held
over the Labor Day week-end and
will be staged in conjunction with
the Queen's Silver Jubilee
"""teletiratiotirfdetiVegea.
Three top name bands have
been engaged for the double-
barreled celebrations.
Walter Ostanek and his popular
band will perform on Thursday
night, while the Tommy Dorsey
orchestra will provide music for
the Saturday night dance.
The popular rock band,
Liverpool, will occupy the stage,
Monday.
A giant bingo will also be
staged in connection with the
festivities on Friday night, while
Sunday night's entertainment
will include a beef barbecue and
an evening of gospel singing.
Tickets for the events, which
will be organized by various
community groups, will be on
sale in the immediate future.
Price war
cuts costs
There's a price war going on in
emulsions and the Town of
Exeter is one of the winners in the
battle.
The war between various
producers was evident in tenders
opened this week for the ap-
plication of colas and chips on
town streets.
The low bid was $18,994.45,
submitted by T. J. Pounder Ltd.
It was almost half the
estimated cost according to
works superintendent Glenn
Kells.
A representative of Pounder
Ltd. was in attendance at the
meeting and advised council of
the price war. He said all
products are cheaper this year,
Kells explained that he had
estimated the cost on last year's
contract prices.
"You're getting it at cost
price," council learned from the
Pounder official.
The highest price submitted
was $22,751,75, still well below the
estimate of around $35.000.
Kells said he would like to see
the work undertaken by the last
week Of June and the company
representative indicated this
may be possible.
In view of the saving, Reeve Si
Simmons suggested that council
could consider applying Colas and
chips on Wellington St. West. He
said the street was too narrow for
the large trucks using it and they
create considerable dust when
they hit the gravel on the
shoulders,
Mayor Shaw asked the road
committee to investigate the
Reeve's suggestion.
Don't forget
to vote!
CAN STILL SMILE - Carf Cann and Alberta Gregson, left, were on hand to welcome three of the walkers
in Saturday's 11-mile route. They included Mayor Bruce Shaw, who is also chairman of the rec centre board
of management, Bruce Martin and board member Howard Pym. Martin was in town visiting the Mayor for
the weekend and joined him for the walk, T-A photo

Pay $500
`commitment'
Exeter council fulfilled
commitment this week when they
agreed to pay $500 for the
removal of the horse barn at the
community park.
The offer of $500 had been made
last fall to the Exeter Turf Club,
and while the barn was finally
removed by a private individual,
council agreed to pay the fee.
Turf club president Jack
Parsons moved the barn to Ns
farm on Highway 83 west of
Exeter, where he is opening a
training track.
Councillor Ted Wright said
Parsons had contacted him to see
if the $500 would be paid by
council,
"It was an agreement and it
was fulfilled," Wright said in
backing his argument that
council should pay Parsons,
"The barn is gone and we owe
him $500," Councillor Harold
Patterson agreed.
At Monday night's meeting,
works superintendent Glenn
Kells asked council what they
planned to do with the large
storage shed that was located
behind the old arena.
Be said it was sitting on an area
that was to be turned into -a
parking area under terms of the
contract for the new rec centre.
"It has to go," Mayor Bruee
Shaw said. "It loOks like the devil
sitting there,"
Reeve Si Simmons wondered if
it could be moved to the works
department yard oh Nelson St
and Kells said he could certainly
use the building. However, he
said there was a shortage Of land.
It was left to the works Cont.
mittee to investigate the:
possibility of purchasing oe
leasing laird from Canadian
Canners at the works department
property and also to have the
shed removed from the park.

Centre fund was the big winner last week, several area residents
